The problem with Crowley's corrective statement is that a majority of people are never going to see it. She did what she did during the televised debate. And she did it on purpose. She knows that the debate reached many more viewers than her correction ever will or any further reporting on her correction ever will.

She played a bigger part in the debate than a moderator ever should. Just run the thing, don't try to correct anyone's statements or opine. Direct the questions and control the time. Then let the viewer decide what he believes.

Interesting t hing about Presidential Debates.. and something to keep in mind when watching the current one...

Prior to the 1988 debates, the League of Women Voters withdrew from the position as debate moderator with this statement after the 1988 Presidential debates:

"the demands of the two campaign organizations would perpetrate a fraud on the American voter."

The CPD (Commission on Presidential Debates) has moderated the debates since then. The CPD is a nonprofit corporation controlled by the Democratic and Republican parties.

Here's the important part: In 2000, the CPD established a rule that for a party to be included in the national debates it must garner at least 15% support across five national polls.

This rule is how the Democrats and Republicans colluded to prevent new views and perspectives from being heard, and effectively ensure their monopoly of our government.... by effectively eliminating any possibility of a 3rd party being part of the debates. We've always had a 2-party system, with the possibility of other parties being influential, but now that is over. With this rule now in place the Republican/Democrat monopoly is a 2 party system in name only.

Candidates from either party can focus on being more "moderate" because there will be no extreme liberal or conservative representation viewed in the debates. More importantly, both parties can give the appearance of "difference" whilst moving the country ideologically away from prudence, towards imprudence. It is also why and how we get candidates (like Obamney) who are more similar than dis-similar, because there is no need.

Without those viewpoints it is easy for both parties to maintain their monopoly, and forever - their control.

People should be pissed about this.. but most people are sheeple...

Hey, I haven't seen this mentioned, but if these high fuel costs continue, the airline industry is gonna go bust. This will not be Bush's fault, but will fall squarely on the shoulders of THIS administration.

Yep. Worries me a ton. AA is in bankruptcy right now. But as far any administration being able to control fuel prices... This is an interesting article.

Exactly correct, we basically have one mainstream statist choice being offered up in to formats. Statism light (Romney) or high Octane statism (Obama). We dont need a third party, what we need is a second party!

It always suprises me how folks get fired up over the non choice they have foisted on them . Im most suprised at the conservatives. So many of them are getting a happy dancing around what appears to be a stronger chance of a Romney victory. What they hell are they celebrating? For fucks sake, they've already lost - Romney's less of a conservative then McCain, Bush II , Dole or Bush I was. And the party rules have been re-written so they get locked out of the GOP in 2016 and beyond.

Furthermore, Romney's campaign has been spending its time suing the Constitution Party (Virgil Goode) and the Libertarian Party (Gary Johnson) trying to keep them off the ballot in Ohio, PA, MI and a number of other states

With regard to the 15 % threshold there is another important threshold - 5%. If a party wins 5% of the national vote, they are automatically on the ballot in all states for next election carrying forward. The libertarian party might get close to that. That would be a significant start - a vote for a third party is not a wasted vote.

I can't believe the Gallup poll has Romney surging so much. Up by 7 right now nationally. That is a pretty insane trajectory in just a couple weeks. I suspect we are going to see one hell of a lot of nastiness.

Since it's a 7-day average, I'd be curious what happens with the numbers once there are more days polled after the last debate than before.

I was talking with someone and they had a very interesting take on Obama. Sounds plausible, but who knows.

He has portrayed himself in many ways as the "Celebrity" president. All the talk shows, the parties, the closeness with Hollywood, etc. Well, how do Americans like to treat celebrities? All lovey dovey until the first sign of trouble and then wham, they love to watch them fall. So maybe America's fascination at a celebrity level with Obama is taking it's natural course.

I don't know. I guess it's a thought.

The other thing that came is just flat out how much more time he spends on non-presidential stuff than the job.

They are gonna need a bigger bird...Joe Trippi says "It's now time for the Dems to worry."

POLLS: Romney takes first lead in electoral college...

Yeah, you can tell that they are worrying because Whoopi first asks Michelle Obama whether the president is "romantic" and then started in on Ann Romney asking about the Romney's faith.

US Weekly discusses how much Ann Romney's clothing cost but completely didn't even mention the cost of what Michelle Obama's cost.

Romney Is Attacked by His Father’s Longtime Aide

A longtime aide to George W. Romney issued a harshly worded critique of Mitt Romney, accusing him of shifting political positions in “erratic and startling ways” and failing to live up to the distinguished record of his father, the former governor of Michigan.

Walter De Vries, who worked for the senior Mr. Romney throughout the 1960s, wrote that Mitt Romney’s bid for the White House was “a far cry from the kind of campaign and conduct, as a public servant, I saw during the seven years I worked in George Romney’s campaigns and served him as governor.”

“While it seems that Mitt would say and do anything to close a deal – or an election,” he wrote, “George Romney’s strength as a politician and public officeholder was his ability and determination to develop and hold consistent policy positions over his life.”

Mr. De Vries’s stinging assessment was contained in a nearly 700-word essay that he distributed to a small group of journalists with whom he has spoken over the past year. He said it was an outline for a book that may or may not be published. A spokeswoman for the Romney campaign declined to comment.

A registered independent, who said he voted for Barack Obama in 2008, Mr. De Vries has previously expressed reservations about Mr. Romney’s political postures in interviews, but never with such sweep.

In a telephone interview, he said he was motivated to write the essay by “an accumulation” of Mr. Romney’s actions, like his comment about 47 percent of Americans and his decision to campaign with Donald Trump.

Mr. De Vries said he was annoyed by Mr. Romney’s repeated references recently to his father as inspiration and influence on him.

“I just don’t see it,” he said. “Where is it? Is it on issues, no? On the way he campaigns? No.”

Mr. De Vries continued, “George would never have been seen with the likes of Sheldon Adelson or Donald Trump.”

(Mr. Adelson, a casino magnate, is a major donor to the “super PACs” that support Mr. Romney.)

Mr. De Vries, who said he wished to the see the Republican Party return to its moderate roots, said he intended to vote for Mr. Obama on Election Day

I guess that's why Gallup is saying unemployment is now down to 7.3%

Most Americans don't believe anything is recovered. It's plain as day from the BLS' own numbers that unemployment is artificially low because tons of people have given up even bothering to look for work. The jobs that have been created are mostly lower paying and part-time jobs. Not only that but Romney's right, the economy is growing at a slower pace now than it was last year and no one has confidence that it will recover. Other trends indicate we're ready to go into yet another recession and the numbers that just came out today show that jobless claims spiked upwards again. Jobless Claims Spike to Four Month High.

no where near recovered if one looks at the facts...

The US economy grew at a 1.65% pace in the first half of the year and, according to Bloomberg Brief's chief economist Jo Brusuelas, is now tracking at a 1.5% pace of growth. The IMF's dour outlook for the world's economy has been shoulder-shrugged by many but in this compendium of everything you need to know about the US economic outlook but were afraid to ask, Brusuelas provides the facts and nothing but the facts. From slack in the labor markets, to a slowdown in investment and soft household spending, even the Fed's unprecedented QEternity is unlikely to grab us back from the edge of a malaise-like sub-2% consensus forecast for Q4.

Image

Labor Market Slack... (divergent)

Image

Policy Uncertainty... high!

Image

Slower Manufacturing Growth... (accelerating lower...)

Image

and Capex Plunges...

Without positive movement in these areas... there is no recovery.. period.
