Thanks Rick. I hope we're good to go here. ;)

Now, that said, my position on unions is variable. I'm not going to throw a blanket statement out like "Unions have destroyed America"

I support unions when it comes to transportation. You can't outsource that. My own sister works for American Airlines. Without union backing, airline employees would have certainly been abused. Truckers? We all know what would happen to them, if not protected by unions.

Fast food? No unions. Flipping burgers is not a highly skilled job and those who take those jobs should be doing them temporarily, while on their way to something greater.

Manufacturing - I'm adamantly against unions. Laziness is promoted and results in wages that result in outsourcing. These unions paralyze business and cause too many "made in China" labels on the shelves of American stores. You will never find an industry with so many people that, when it comes to picking up an empty coffee cup or some other garbage, saying "that's not my job".

Even with the "conjured up" image that you speak of, that still does not negate that there is and has been corruption in unions. I don't think Jimmy Hoffa and the involvement of organized crime in unions is "conjured up". Also I remember when certain states were looking to pass right to work laws, their where union members\ supporters that got violent at what were peaceful demonstrations in support of the purposed law.

You can't even compare the corruption in unions with the corruption in corporate america. Seriously, can you? I KNOW you people aren't this stupid.

Apparently you know even LESS about reading comprehension... Try reading my post again.. I'll paste it below so you won't even have to work at it..

Just how is business strangulating the middle class?

Lack of demand is the core of what is ailing the economy... and that lack of demand is where job loss, and wage loss (from more people competing for fewer jobs) comes from.. in a robust economy wage rise comes from just the opposite.

You're dreaming if you think unions are going to preserve wages (much less jobs) in a declining economy...

Please point out WHERE in the above post I ever said unions were "bad"..

...and regarding what I "know" about unions..

My 1st job ever was as a bagger for a local grocery chain at 16 years old... after a couple years I became a clerk, and joined the local grocery clerks union... where I loyally paid my dues for the next 6 years, and become a Journeyman grocery clerk. I then left to go to school.. at 24 years old at top union scale. I witnessed a strike where the union lost and a 2-tiered wage system was instituted, and I also worked alongside lots of imbeciles who had ZERO pride in their work, ZERO work ethic, and just showed up to get a check.. So I lived the "good" stuff.. and the "bad" stuff..

... the MAIN reason I left was because I wasn't interested working my ass off, to earn the same wage as those who put in half the effort.

Unions serve a purpose.. but when unions willingly pursue job security for members that makes employment sacrosanct OVER the quality of an employees work, thereby protecting useless employees, instead of working WITH the business to create a stronger, merit-based workforce, the union is just as much a problem as the useless employee.

I hope that people here don't think two wrongs make it right. I'm sure unions have done some good but they also have added to the problems we have in the U.S. as far as employment. I remember reading about the demise of Hostess. The union had a system in place where the company could not have their bread products and cake products delivered to stores on the same truck. The company had to employ two union drivers to deliver the products in separate trucks. That is just stupid. It's when the unions seem to get big they get greedy. I worked with a person that left to manage a distribution center that was unionized. He came back after six months because the union went on strike, things were not going their way. It got so bad that he had to have a security escort for protection coming and going from the distribution center. Quite simply there is no excuse for any corruption in unions. Their purpose is to provide fair employment to their members. Period.

U.S. spy agency bugged U.N. headquarters: Germany's Spiegel
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/08/ ... 8120130825

BERLIN | Sun Aug 25, 2013 11:30am EDT

(Reuters) - The U.S. National Security Agency has bugged the United Nations' New York headquarters, Germany's Der Spiegel weekly said on Sunday in a report on U.S. spying that could further strain relations between Washington and its allies.

Citing secret U.S. documents obtained by fugitive former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, Der Spiegel said the files showed how the United States systematically spied on other states and institutions.

Der Spiegel said the European Union and the U.N.'s Vienna-based nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), were among those targeted by U.S. intelligence agents.

In the summer of 2012, NSA experts succeeded in getting into the U.N. video conferencing system and cracking its coding system, according one of the documents cited by Der Spiegel.

"The data traffic gives us internal video teleconferences of the United Nations (yay!)," Der Spiegel quoted one document as saying, adding that within three weeks the number of decoded communications rose to 458 from 12.

Internal files also show the NSA spied on the EU legation in New York after it moved to new rooms in autumn 2012. Among the documents copied by Snowden from NSA computers are plans of the EU mission, its IT infrastructure and servers.

According to the documents, the NSA runs a bugging program in more than 80 embassies and consulates worldwide called "Special Collection Service". "The surveillance is intensive and well organized and has little or nothing to do with warding off terrorists," wrote Der Spiegel.

OPEN LETTER

Snowden's leaks have embarrassed the United States by exposing the global extent of its surveillance programs. Washington has said its spies operate within the law and that the leaks have damaged national security.

A week ago Britain, a staunch U.S. ally in the intelligence field, detained the partner of a Brazil-based journalist working for London's Guardian newspaper who has led coverage of Snowden's leaks. British police said documents seized from David Miranda were "highly sensitive" and could put lives at risk if disclosed.

The Guardian last week destroyed computer equipment containing Snowden files after it was threatened with possible legal action by senior British government advisers.

In an open letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron published on Sunday, editors of leading Nordic newspapers said Miranda's detention and moves against the Guardian were "undermining the position of the free press throughout the world".

"(We are) deeply concerned that a stout defender of democracy and free debate such as the United Kingdom uses anti-terror legislation in order to legalize what amounts to harassment of both the paper and individuals associated with it," said the letter from Sweden's Dagens Nyheter, Finland's Helsingin Sanomat, Denmark's Politiken and Norway's Aftenposten.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Barack Obama announced plans to limit U.S. government surveillance programs, saying the United States could and should be more transparent.

The issue has also become a hot topic in Germany before an election next month. Some reports have suggested that German intelligence agents have cooperated with U.S. spies.

There could be a voter backlash if it emerges that Chancellor Angela Merkel, tipped to win a third term, knew more about such cooperation than she has so far acknowledged.

Not that surprising. With all that has come out lately, it seems they want to spy everywhere, on everyone, all the time. I wonder if Snowden thinks that releasing this stuff is going to somehow take down B.O.. Which in my mind is highly doubtful.

Let's all chill now. Obviously this is just a fan flag. If you saw a hooters girl wearing a flag bikini, I'm sure that would be quite alright. I do think that anyone putting a presidents face on a flag like that is terribly misguided, but it's just some average American being lame. Not a sanctioned, Obama-supported act.

Actually it's an oxymoron as I see it. B.O. obviously doesn't identify with the flag at all. In fact at one time he refused to wear one as lapel pin. The flag was created during the time of our founding fathers which he has shown he doesn't identify with. They have created a system that restrains him from doing everything he wants. It just affirms that the general public doesn't have a clue.

There are basically two ways to get ahead outside of winning at lottery, lawsuit, gambling or having the money willed to you. First way is to work hard for it. Second way is joining a union and then going on strike for more money/benefits instead.

Remind me again what happened to the Hostess company.

They reduced the U.S.' carbon footprint by going from two union driven delivery trucks to each store to zero trucks.

Grupo Bimbo filled in the void once Hostess left. Grupo Bimbo headquarters is in Mexico. So now not only is Grupo Bimbo providing the "carbon footprint" in America, the revenue made in America goes to Mexico.

Yeah, that's a good one.

Well, The judge overseeing the bankruptcy for Hostess ordered them to go back to the bargaining table with the union. So the union did have a chance to work something out to save their jobs and keep Hostess operating. Guess the union felt no jobs was better then a compromise.

With the latest events unfolding in Syria and the appearance that B.O. is about to order military action against them, I wonder if VP Biden is going to impart the same wisdom that he gave to former POTUS GWB that he needs to get Congressional approval or could face impeachment for not observing separation of powers. Also, when B.O. was a senator, he as well had the same view that such actions needed Congressional approval. As expected not a peep from the leaders in Congress asking for B.O. to go through them to address taking action. There's your "change" B.O. supporters.

This thing could end up being far worse than any wars started under Bush. Putin is vehemently against it, as Syria is a Russian ally. Iran is threating Israel, we have civil war in Syria and Egypt at the present time and I just think this will be WW3, if we go into Syria. There are a lot of players being drawn into the ring, if and when this war starts. I think we need to let Syria and Egypt work out their own problems. This country also needs to stop funding these terrorists and the Muslim Brotherhood. We need to stop being the police of the world and spend our resources on our own people, education, job development and infrastructure, etc. We have plenty of our own cities here that are in ruins. It's senseless for us to go create more loss of life and ruin abroad. Hell, we can't even fix our domestic problems so who are we to try and fix other's problems? Besides, frankly, we are economically too weak, to go wasting another several trillion dollars. We're barely recovering from a recession, if you can even call it recovery. Any prolonged war will bring us right back were we were in 2008, if we don't end up going nuke first.

I agree. Let the UN deal with the situation and not have US deal with it. Isn't that one of the reasons the UN was created for? I'm tired of us putting our military resources into the middle east. I am concerned that this could lead into a world war. If so, it will be a real wake up call. I hope I am wrong but this situation smells to me. If I understand correctly, the Syrian government has been winning far more then the rebels. If that's true, then why would they need to turn to chemical weapons? To me situations like this gives further proof that we need to start focusing on being energy independent and getting at our own sources of fossil fuels in the U.S.. If we did, we could be not as concerned as to what is happening in the middle east. The middle east has had sectarian battles for thousands of years. The U.S. will not be successful if fixing that.

The Bible also speaks of such a blue print. Uncanny, isn't it? We're seeing it unfold, almost, per script. Not going to go into some religeous stuff here, but the mile markers seem to align somewhat.

World war? I can't even pretend that would be a possibility here. They used chem weapons, we drop a few bombs. Shit, that's routine for us now. I think we have it calendared for the next 200 years. Why not plan for things we know will happen ever decade or two?

Russia always warns us. China always warns us. Everyone does there saber rattling and they campaign on it and then the world keeps turning.

We are more weaker on the world stage than we have been in a long, long time, so maybe these other countries will feel more empowered to do something. But we are still as militarily capable as we have always been and we can and will kick the shit out of anyone that asks for it, so....

By the way - I recall many saying that the Iraq WMD's were shipped to Syria before we finally got there. And now Syria is using WMD's. Kind of makes you say, "Hmmmmm."

Even though the thought of dropping live aviation ordnance is quite attractive to me, I do not think we (the U.S) should get involved in Syria and Egypt. Whatever goes on in those two countries really doesn't have any impact on the U.S. imo. Now getting involved will impact U.S. because of the allies of the two countries.

Another thing to think about is, we see the governments of those countries killing their own people. Don't think for a second that the U.S. Government wouldn't do the very same thing to their own people if we were to go against the U.S. Government ideals. Why else is the Obama administration keeping track of everyone's phone conversations, internet activities, IRS dealings aimed at specific groups, etc. It just hasn't gotten to the point yet where they need to start killing to do what they want.

I say the US should stay out of Syria and Egypt and let them take care of their own business.

I really hate when intelligent people say really, really stupid fucked up shit. President Clinton:

A great democracy does not make it harder to vote than to buy an assault weapon. We must open those stubborn gates.

Someone, anyone tell me please about anyone in this country that is a citizen that had trouble voting. You walk up, you show your ID, and you vote. Sometimes 2 or 3 times for God's sake! If you didn't register in time, blame only yourself. I didn't register in time once. You know what I did? I stayed home. I didn't blame the government or some pretend bullshit. If you don't have an ID, or a car, or whatever, well then hey, that's your challenge.

I'm so sick of hearing about this vast conspiracy about it being hard to vote. It's a bullshit myth.

And by the way Mr. Clinton, by almost every sane account, we should all be so lucky that everyone owns an assault rifle.
