Journey/Augeri live on "youtube" from 1998

Postby McNeil » Sat Aug 12, 2006 11:00 am

Im just uploading a 3 min segment from this pro shot , untransmitted gig, from Virginia Beach on to "You tube"

Its taking forever, but should be up in about 20 mins..Im having to rip it from V.O.B. file on the DVD to mpeg, then split it into manageable chunks...pain in the ass ...but I know people will wanna see something from it.

Augeri is really rockin in this 90 min gig...singing live with no probs, this right at the start of his stint with Journey

I will post up the link as soon as its done

regards

yeah, its a bloody shame what happened, I really hope he rides it out and comes out the other end.

I will try to find time to throw up more stuff over the next couple days, particularly things like "Remember Me" which wasnt featured on the Vegas official DVD, and of which there is a great version in this gig

He was struggling with the notes even then. Poor fucker.

Just makes me think. Give JSS a bit of practice. I bet he'll get the notes. Maybe even kill them.

U know what else? Neal looks younger now. Cain looks way older now. Deen is thinner. Ross, well he's just Ross.

Well, having seen the whole gig a few times now, I dont think he is struggling at all. but he is at the edge of his range quite often, so time was gonna, and indeed "did" take its toll on the guys chords. Shame

Maybe they just need to suck it up, take it down a bit. Try to save any singer's voice. Or hire a 20 yr old. :?:

Reminded me of why he shouldn't have been hired. If he couldn't hit the notes in '98, how the hell could he hit them even a few years down the road? Why didn't they just step it down. Makes no sense at all. What I never got was why they didn't spend some time with him and see if they could write well together before they hired him. That might have saved all of them a shitload of grief. I can't stand to see those video clips with him in them now. Reminds me of what they pulled on fans.

I was watching this again & u know Augeri does put his own little bits & pieces into the music & the notes at this point. I don't remember him doing that when I saw him in concert. He pretty much did them like the Greatest Hits by then. Did this change during his tenure?

I've got several Journey boots from '98 all the way through this year and Augeri sounded pretty good on most of them up until 2002.

They sound damn good. If you're going to be an Augeri hater, at least dont be an ignorant one. Its obvious why the band gave him the job, regardless or how it turned out. The band looks energized here. Maybe a little nervous even. thats good.

By all accounts THEY DID!
Several interviews stated that part of Steve's weekend audition process was doing some writing stuff with the guys.
Then two years later Neal would kind of contradict himself and say that they are finally gelling as a band and Augeri is at long last finding his writing niche.
I don't get that at all. :?

Looking back, some Augeri/Cain/Schon collaborations have produced some delectable musical fruit (FITH, BTC) and others haven't (Live and Breathe).
Ultimately, Neal and Jon were the principal writers and dictated the band's sound (for better or worse).

Will JSS change that?
I think so.

Throughout his career, Augeri has always injected his own little vocal flourishes and ad-libs into singing live.
This is noticeable as early as his live Tyketto days.
Though being constrained largely by the Perry-vocal influence, I think Augeri did his best to put his own stamp on things.
