Do you think he might be referring to Journey regarding one of those bands that used backing tracks prior to JSS!!!

AEROSMITH have been given a huge boost by QUEEN guitarist BRIAN MAY, who is raving about the U.S. rockers on his website.

May caught Aerosmith onstage at the Hyde Park Calling festival at the weekend (23Jun07) and admits their performance made him realise there's still "greatness" and "passion" in rock 'n' roll. May writes: "There is so much fake stuff around these days, people short-cutting, not knowing their trade, having no respect for their audience... and in many cases feeding all recorded stuff from hard disc into the PA, for their fans to listen to. "Sometimes you are really listening to an entire pre-record - like a crap TV mime show brought into an arena or a stadium. Sometimes recently I have felt ashamed of my business. "But Aerosmith brought back the smile to my face - brought back pride to me - these guys remind us that there is still greatness out there... There is still a band that is all real, and full of passion, and innovation, and courage, and brick-loads of polish too. "These guys have been to the wall and back, and it shows. Each one of them has devoted his life to his craft... I loved every second. The most joyous thing about them is that they did NOT become SHOW-BIZ - they did NOT lose their roots. They are still treading that fine line between structure and improvisation."

I'm not so sure Brian's talking about Journey but who knows. Anyway, he was also raving about Journey's show from a few months ago as well.

Who knows who he's reffering to when he talks about pre-recorded stuff...The list of bands is pretty long I guess.And pre-JSS Journey's on it.

If I had to pick a part of Brian's review that could've been a slight reference to Journey, I'd have to pick this. Journey's been a huge disappointment to us all lately, but Aerosmith should be really pleased to get such great kudos from an outstanding peer like Brian. Now I want to go to an Aerosmith concert!!

But the reason people look at/to what Brian says is because he is an extremely intellegent, articulate person "who knows what of he speaks". If it were you or I commenting on the "state of the Music Business", we could be blown off with no problems.

But Brian has been there, done that, and been the one to sell all those flippin' T-Shirts!

So his thoughts on the "biz" carry a bit more weight, so to speak, than anything you or I could come up with on a good day.

I love the guy and love that he's asserted this position - someone HAS to!

He's defined the difference bewtween art and shit (which is what I've tried to do here unsuccessfully). The difference between craft and crap. I think he does a FINE job of that.

He's speaking from the point of when you HAD to be good LIVE in order to get a record deal. He's speaking from the point of what it means to be an ARTIST.

For the record, Journey still used backing tapes even with JSS. It was kinda funny too, because it'd be Jeff singing leads and fake Augeri singing harmonies on a tape.

I've got NO problem with a band using them as backing to fatten it up a little bit.

Big monster gang choruses like Ask The Lonely, it always sounds pretty tapey no matter what era we're lisening to.

JSS is a flat stud, though, and needed no help on his leads....hell he used to come in here and admit it if he whiffed on a note or 2 (which on the 5 boots I have was not often all. Can't mistake not sounding a lot like Perry for bad patches, either).

Zero more weight than any of ours? Besides being a legendary guitarist in a legendary rock act, you're right, he has no more clout to talk about the music world than you or I do. I love when stars interact with their fans or speak their minds on the net, whether it's JSS posting on forums, Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater posting on his forum, or Brian speaking his mind.

He's signing the praises of Aerosmith for keeping it real meanwhile people on this very site have said they've witnessed Tyler be swarmed by fans onstage, his microphone goes flying and yet the Ragdoll lead vocals come through the PA unmolested.

Did anyone watch the Princess Di Concert yesterday???
I only watched the first hour or so and, I gotta say,
it 'looked' and DEFINITELY 'sounded' like Duran Duran
were playing to about 80% pre-recorded tracks.

From John Taylor's Bass lines to Guitar-Player-Whoever's riffs, right
on up to some of Simon LeBon's Vocals...
What I was hearing most of the time was not matching up
with what I was 'seeing' and it wasn't something as simple
as the video/audio signals being out of sync...
There was some MAJOR Lipping/Air Guitar-Bass going on...

I dunno, I saw a little bit of "White Boys" and Simon sounded pretty mediocre, so I doubt it was a tape.

I'm sure they play along to a click with some sequenced stuff though, just because of the nature of DD's music.

Wouldn't surprise me if they did something like this for a worldwide televised event though, after what happened during "View To A Kill" at Live Aid...I wonder if Simon is still terrified of singing on TV just from that one note.

Journey (and a whole lot other bands, actually) use pre-recorded choruses and sequences.

That's what Jon's lap top on his piano's for.

He triggers all the stuff from there.

Rush uses an "extra" key player right beside the engineer in the front mix.

I had the chance to see him "perform".

One finger notes! Too funny.

I know they got the usual sequenced fillers and BG vox going...
That's a given, especially on "Wild Boys". I don't have a problem
with that...

But, for example, take the "Rio" performance.
During the sax solo, Taylor plays a bass riff (that I've always loved)
and they got cameras on him... There was NO WAY he was 'playing'
the riff we were 'hearing'. Make sense?
And I saw things like that throughout the performance.

I actually LOVE Duran Duran but am using them as an example
of how bad it could be getting in the industry with this stuff.
