OT: The Police restore my faith in Rock Concerts

Postby TRAGChick » Sun Aug 05, 2007 3:26 am

Hi, all....

Well, it's now 1:15PM in the afternoon....I just woke up about 30 mins. ago.....with a sore throat / no speaking voice & ringing in my ears....

...because I saw The Police last night at MSG.

Best concert I saw this year. :D And oh yeah - it was SOLD OUT.

I can now understand the rantings Stewart C. had it the beginning - they took all of their Classic Songs, and "retooled" them, to have a kinda "u Turn" effect - you think you know the next part of the song, but no....there's an extra bridge, instrumental, Vocal improv from Sting, or a call-and-response "ee YO!!" patented thing that only Sting can do. 8)

So, if you're playing every song that you've know a certain way for over 20 years, and NOW you have to play them differently, yeah - things are gonna eff up.

But not last night - GOOD LORD they were fantastic!!!

I thought of MelRock, and all of the um...*ahem*....DISCUSSIONS  that have been debated here, especially about how Classic Rock Singers tune their songs down....in all honesty, that happened in only a handful of songs....in the others, Sting took different "Vocal Routes" in his delivery: if he sang high in the original, he sang lower, or chose a completely different vocal line altogether that allowed him to use a lower tone.

But besides that, STING CAN STILL BRING IT!!! AND HE LOOKED DAMN EFFING GOOD DOING IT, TOO!!! DAMN that Yoga stuff works MAGIC!! LOL

To sum up....

....this show was absolutely amazing....their new arrangements were out of this world....delivery, showmanship, and musicianship were all top notch.....

....and you know what?

I REALLY DON'T CARE that things were tuned down....these men are the originators of these Classic songs.....they STILL bring the magic that ONLY THEY could bring to performing these songs....and in the end, it's all that matters......and that's what makes them Legendary. 8)

The Police are in Baltimore today with an all day festival - Cheap Trick is on the bill.

Can't go unfortunately as it turns out - family comes first.

Sting's son's band, "FictionPlane", opened....Joe Sumner is also a Bass Player...and sounds like "Sting - Version 2.0"

Here's a Radio studio acoustic version of one of their songs: "Two Sisters"

You know what?

LET HIM BE.

This "insta-response" - AND the fact that Mr. Sumner is STILL WORKIN' IT - has really opened my eyes..... :(

Yeah; OK....I don't "know" EITHER of these guys from ADAM....except that I've "gotten to know them" thru their exposure in the Limelight....

 ...but I've had just about enough of one of them....for what I hope are OBVIOUS reasons....

I searched through this forum just because I recalled this specific thread, and decided to add my 2 cents.
Got back from Oct, 2 show , and got mixed feelings about the show.
Some songs were terrific, while others were the display of what they were and now they aren't anymore.
The setlist is the same as the US shows, with the exception of The Bed's too big without you being replaced by Hole in My Life (medley with Hit the Road Jack).
Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon , Roxanne, Can't Stand Losing U/Reggatta de Blanc, When the World is Running Down, Walking in your Footsteps were GREAT!
Don't Stand So Close to Me was so bad. Tuned down affair took the magic away from those ethereal Andy Summers chords. Most songs had errors (especially with the endings) , and while this is the greatness of the live show, we all saw Sting giving fire-eyed looks to his partners.
The star of the show was absolutely without any doubt Andy Summers. He played lots of improv, tried to interact with the crowd (70000 people here at the stadium), even more than Mr. Sting. The man himself showed without any doubt why he has been so succesful in his life. Great stage presence, fantastic voice, even though a half of the songs have been tuned down and didn't click with all the guys who have been singing Police for 15 years in a row. Another complain was that lot of songs were played at half speed. Truth Hits Everybody, the same Hole in my Life, Next to You. Not good at all.
So, at the end of the day, I was happy to have been present to their last show together (I strongly believe so, this show was more the show of 3 solo artists than a band together), but I knew it was most for that. My memories will not tell this concert was one of the best I ever saw.
