Talk this new Journey shit up like it's the best thing since sliced bread. I'm sure he got paid well to deliver that sermon.

FYI: This guy also talks up every Iron Maiden album he's worked on as the greatest thing they've ever done. The last 2 have been atrocious.

I'm not a Shirley guy, either I thought TBF was an underachievement and though an improvement, so was Arrival dragged down by Shirley TBFesque gook like ATW, LOD, and WYL. The tension on the Arrival rockers transcended where TBF though.

Yep, probably a case of scotch....fucker probably read right off of an Irving ASSoff script.

Sorry, this reads like damage control. Fucka and Fro dont like the fact that 99.99999999% of people online think they're fucking high for violating their past like this...

...so they do the standard bullshit Journey thing.....send out some fucking minion for a press release.

Looks like I have to add CaveDrunk to my fucking douchebag list for 2007

No way. Knowing him and given the fact that he "posted" only in response to my e-mail informing him of the latest re-recording rumors, I believe him.

While the song selection catered solely to Perry's strengths, the SOUND of TBF was amazing. However, Arrival did not sound nears as good. Funny that Shirley was a aprt of both CDs and they could sound so different.

Well, we know the difference here. TBF was a Perry album...and Perry albums have always sounded great. Arrival was a Kalodner New York piece of s#it. Augeri did as good as he could, and they all tried too hard.

I will not attribute the sound of TBF to Perry. Just like I will not attribute the sound of Arrival to Augeri.

"Dance of Death" sucked. "A Matter of Life and Death" was pretty good.

Last good Maiden album (IMO) was Brave New World. I don't remember if he worked on that one..but it was still good. :-)

I have to agree that A Matter Of Life And Death was a good one. It took me a few spins to really get into it, but now it's definitely in the regular rotation.

But Shirley thought that too....and as far as I'm aware he has never made out it was a great record.

I only found "Life And Death" mediocre. I haven't listened to it in a while...I'll give it another CAREFUL spin. Just as soon as I find it.

BNW was the first album Shirley worked on. It was an excellent album.

Unfortunately, they've tried to remake that album twice. DOD and AMOLAD are both bad albums.

AMOLAD literally has 8 songs that have long boring slow instrumental intros.... this *was* a metal band at one point. Some of the intros sound exactly like those on the previous 2 albums. The songs are uninspired and go nowhere regardless of how grandiose they try to be.

Ever hear "Powerslave", "Somewhere in Time" or "Seventh Son"? Not even in the same universe as that stuff.

I think when there is a seriously lack of quality music out there, sub par efforts from known artists get more credit than they deserve. A kind of wishful thinking.

I've read enough Shirley reports from the studio to know that every project he works on is touted as a fantastic pinnacle of achievement by whatever artist it happens to be.

Agreed on BNW and DOD. I really like "A Matter of Life and Death", though, and I don't expect them to sound like their classic stuff from the 80s.

Departure sounds horrible. Great songs, but it sounds so far inferior soundwise than Infinity or Evolution. I wish they would have put the time and effort and stuck with Roy Thomas Baker for Departure.

Trial By Fire was not mixed by Kevin Shirley. It was mixed by George Massenberg. HE is the reason that it sounds as good as it does. That is not to say that the recording engineer can't contribute. They most certainly do lay the sonic foundation. I do recall George saying at the time that because it was an analog project, that it sounded great. At that time many studios were recording to crappy Alesis Adats and Tascam MDMs.

What you all have to keep in mind is that before the remastering, the CDs were prints of the masters made for vinyl, tape or broadcast. Mostly vinyl. On records, the low-end had to be rolled off steeply below 50Hz, to keep the cutting head from bouncing all over the place, when cutting the master. The EQ, compression, etc were taylored for the best results of the disc. Cassette masters were the same way. Broadcast masters were/are not as compressed.

When they started to remaster, they made decisions based on what digital audio was doing to the sound. Some records sound better after the remasters. This is preticated on master quality of course.
