line of fire and stay awhile sound better to me live on captured than on departure.i like the live version of wheel in the sky better live than on infinity.i also like just the same way better on captured live than on evolution.something about the live versions because they seem to put more energy and emotion into it.i've never had greatest hits live so i can't comment on that.after greatest hits in '88 and time3 in ''92 i never bought any journey releases after that but before that journey is solid gold.i've never had trial by fire, greatest hits live, arrival, red 13 or generations.journey to me ceased to exist right after raised on radio.1978-1986 was the golden era.

Maybe the live versions are better because they've played the songs many more times by then and have gotten smoother at them, plus have changed them up a bit, and usually always for the better.

Thank you!
I had no idea that he ever played that one live.
In fact, in all honesty, I don't think I would have believed it without hearing it myself.

My favorite Journey tune is "Rubicon". That being said, it just doesn't usually seem to work as well live, for some reason.

There is quite a bit of Perry-era Journey that once I have heard it live has won me over the studio version. Here's a few and will add more as I think of them. Lovin Touchin Squeezin IMO comes across much better live than studio, has more of a bluesy/sexy swagger when played live. DayDream is another one that sold me over studio version. And surprisingly Perry's Stand Up Before It's Too Late from FTLOSM was one I could take or leave until I heard it live, love it much better live.

Only the Young is one that I don't think I've ever heard a live version come close to the studio version.

Back talk sounded better live as well as the song Escape.

love rubicon too.one of the last songs where the neal guitar is heavy and upfront.of course the next phase for them was raised on radio which was drowned in keyboards with a more poppy type sound.

Are we talking about vocals? I can't tell much of a difference in instruments.
I like both studio and Live - some just have different moods. My fave J. song is "Still They Ride" and I love the studio version, but when I heard the Philly Live, I was kinda disappointed - it sounded "too up"...then I heard the Budokan Live and I absolutely LOVE it. He captured the right mood for the song.
Patiently Live is incredible, but I also love the studio.
All I know is that SP was just as amazing Live as recorded...and, he could run around & sing perfectly, too!

I need more boots.

Patiently definitely was breathtaking when SP sang it live. The recorded version pales in comparison. Anyone has the '79 Comiskey Park Patiently to post? It's even better than this Houston version, imo. I'm afraid I'm a klutz when it comes to song sharing.

Every time I see a part of this show appear I have to ask the poster if they have the whole show. If you do, I want to know if your copy has a good version of "Gonna Be Alright"? I have the whole show but on my copy that song has the cd skipping at the beginning. I have been trying to find a good copy of that song for years.

Can you help? :P

Thanks!

I have this exact boot but mine is called "Chicago, August 1979" So either they are the same thing or mine is mislabeled. :?:

It's on the 2001 DVD. Best song on the disc, in my opinion.

I love live shows, but I'm all about the studio recordings. I love hearing EVERYTHIHNG and not just two instruments and I love the ideas that go into studio versions.

Are you sure it is Houston 80 you have? Gonna Be Alright? Do you mean She Makes Me Feel Alright? That one is on the Comisky Park 79 and a couple other 78 & 79 shows, but it's not on the Houston 80 one? What is the setlist you have. The Houston 80 one I have has following set list:

Intro

Where Were You
Just the Same Way
Lovin You Is Easy
La Do Da - drum solo

Kahoutek

Walks Like A Lady
break/interview -SP
Winds of March
Feeling That Way
