What do you think Journey's AGENDA is for this new CD?

Postby jrnyjetster » Wed Feb 16, 2005 5:00 am

 By agenda, I mean, will this mainly be a release primarily for the diehard core of fans? OR do they plan on marketing/promoting this to a much wider and perhaps younger audience? With the help of a new label, of course. What do you all think?

And BTW, PLEASE, if you have nothing constructive to add, then please spare us from your posting.

I hope they learned their lesson from the bad reviews of Red 13 that they don't need to experiment -- just give the fans solid, melodic songs with strong vocals and Neal's emotive guitar. I don't think they will try to appeal to young fans -- today's new music is so different than anything Journey would want to make that it's sad. I expect a similar CD to Arrival.

It will probably be like Arrival with a few less sappy ballads and more kick ass rockers. I'm looking forward to it.

I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what it is that Journey expects out of this CD. Is it CD for them...just a creative output? Or is it for all their fans...a creative outlet for widespread appeal? I hope Journey look at the way Soul SirkUS did things: Chemistry and Energy, post-production and a good package, Internet available, a good buzz, a distribution deal. Worry about the music, do what they want to do, then see what comes of it. If Journey thinks they have a hit I think there will be a push. But I still don't see a full-court press of TV Appearances, etc. Journey just doesn't strike me as that type of band anymore. I think there will be a fair buzz about the CD since it has already begun due to the WOF. I think there will be some follow-up when the CD comes out. But in the end, I think Journey will rely on the tour to do the promoting. Of course, back in the day, that is what a tour was for. So as long as they play a fair representation of the new music than I say Journey will still have a sucessful year. I guess I just think this will be seat-of-the-pants promotion...reactive more than proactive. (I hope I am wrong)

It''ll probably be more like the Pre-Perry material.

:?: NO, I'm thinking it will be more like a PROGRESSIVE Journey, as it should be.

Actually, even though this thread's from 3 years ago, this discussion is ironically relevant again.....

We all know where GENERATIONS went for Journey... :?

Let's see where REVELATION takes them.... :?:

Thanks for bringing this back to the top ProgRocker53!

I agree with the new songs, I think if they are really trying to be relevant again they will push the new music. That has always been the disappointment for me, new album, play 2 songs and back to the dirty dozen.

Pure and simple. The new album is a means to put out music they've had in their own personal catalogues. It's probably not anything too special, but a few of the songs probably have a deeper meaning to the writers.

I hate to harp on the business thing, but I'm sure that Irving Azoff's success with the recent Eagles deal was a huge influence. All the resurgence, as of late, with DSB was something that the 'company' needed to capitalize on. And what a better opportunity to throw the band's hat into the ring, no? As we've talked in other threads, it's win-win for everyone. If it tanks, so what...they've got WalMart money. If it doesn't, then they've got even more opportunity to keep the name and the catalogue alive. And why not ride some new music and a new singer (d@mn good I'll add in keeping with the Perry legacy) on that revitalized popularity?

I think finally, or resurged, Journey has the opportunity to become respected 'celebrity'. And the job of celebrity is to keep yourself in the news. Good, bad, or otherwise, right now, their job is keep in the news...maybe not major market news, but any news is better than little.

And that's their agenda. Keep playing. Keep touring ALL markets. And if they sell some new music, then great...they have perpetuated themselves even more.

Do some comparisons if you must. Where is Kansas? Styx? REO? Foreinger? or Boston? You can bet the ranch that they all wish they were in Journey's position. (Even popular bands within the last 10-15 yrs wish they had Journey's pulling power.)

Not saying that Journey is the 'coolest' band, but they are probably the most viable corporate dinosaur around. There's merit in that. A lot.

To keep some fans interested.
To bring back a similar legacy sound.
To make money for the corp shirts who help fund the tours where each band member makes the most money.

Easy - emulate the Eagles and sell a shitload of CDs to a wide fan base and make a stack of money. Good for them :)
