I'm not one of those peeps that subscribes to the theory that says to like one, you have to hate the other.

To me...I've got a chance to hear songs I love interpreted similarly but differently. I'm cool with that.

Arnel's OTY live is amazing. When I first heard SP do OTY back in the day, I thought great song. I think that today with AP.

In general (except most of the new songs), I prefer SP for recordings but I prefer AP for live. For rock music, I prefer AP. For ballads, SP hands down.

Words to describe them:
SP = soul, passion, smooth and refined voice
AP = heart, energy, powerful and raw voice

Mostly, I prefer the songs if sang by AP but I prefer the way SP sings the songs.

I also can't imagine the new songs such as NWA better sang by SP (pretty much my same prejudice against AP before I heard the re-recordings).

I like them both, in their own unique ways. I enjoy and cherish the memories while also living in the present.

All of these just my own worthless opinion.

SP was co-creator & embodied those words & melody and put them out into the world - that means a lot. If we go with analogies (I can't compete with BJG & Rhi - lol) think of a Picasso or Degas and a reproduction painting. Which would you rather have?

Whilst singing is not painting, if the same subject was painted by different artists some would prefer the Picasso, others the Rembrandt. Technical skill doesn't always figure in as much as what is pleasing on the eye to the individual - or in Journey's case pleasing to the ear.

Of course, it is all subjective...even what you would consider to be art, but the way I look at the re-records is not any different than a painter copying a famous painting. One is the real deal and the other isn't. It would be different if there were two artists sitting down and viewing a subject and interpreting it differently on the canvas, but that isn't the case here. Somebody had the original vision and created it from nothing (Perry) and someone else is just making a copy.

Very true when regarding the forging of paintings there is no room for reinterpretation. However regarding the re-recordings, some will prefer the sound of Arnel's voice to Perrys and some might prefer the updated instrumentals and production. For others the reverse might be true. Its definitely a mixed bag.

Anyone a fan of the Scandal/Patty Smyth cover of Only the Young? I thought she did a great job on it. Along with Sharon Bryant's version of Foolish Heart they are the best covers I have heard of Perry led songs.

Centreport is a group of apartments and businesses on Trinity, East of 360.

Diggin that airplane noise over there? I used to live in an apartment on Trinity (Post Oak Place I think) and it sounded like the wheels were just missing the rooftops. Holy shit it was loud. You couldn't turn the tv up high enough to hear it.

I know the area...I used to go to a sports bar called "Upper Deck" located right on Trinity a little west of 360.

I live on the north side near the Harwood exit on 360.

I'm used to the airplanes....I don't really even notice it.... Being able to cut through DFW is pretty cool though during heavy traffic times.

Never been in Dukes. I've heard many stories from people at work though. I'm far better off keeping my butt out of places like that. It's right across the highway from me though, if I ever decided to go, I could walk home.

I don't think Eminem would do justice to the song Open Arms !!!

the point is SP and AP are different people inspite of some unbelievable tone similarities. they are still distinguishable at some point like one is mellow and one is raspy. it's like in an art class where both SP and AP are students and are trying to paint a nude figure of a woman (song). surely, both students would try to paint what is literally before them (no personal interpretation). therefore, individual interpretation is kicked-out of the equation and where finesse/quality in painting of the painter is the main objective. self-interpretation is only evident if sang on a different music genre.
