In 2005 i went to see Judas Priest live in Monsters of Rock..the band sound awful that rainy night specially Rob Halford, i though they were done at that point; last year they come again to my country, i went to see them sure that maybe it was a lost of my money but they did an awesome show and Halford did a great performance too...Arnel didn't sing as good as we are used to hear him in superbowl, but he is an amazing singer, with a fantastic vocal range....he seem to me very aware of what he want to give to the Journey audience, have a humble way to say it, and that add points to his statements in that vid...i don't have any doubts that he with Journey will make kick ass shows again

Difference being you will likely never see Halford apologising for an off night. Nor should he.

Rise above and move on.

All singers have good and bad nights. The nature of your vocals. Sometimes the darn things don't cooperate! Cut Arnel some slack folks, even though I love Perry's voice, I have heard some not so great performances due to overwork, tired, sick etc................. :D

The reason he is not being cut much slack is due to the importance of the event to the band and the fact that he blew out his voice on a mini solo 'tour' instead of getting the vocal rest he claimed he needed which resulted in Journey's own tour being cut short.

well, who's not cutting him slack? I haven't heard anything from the band at all. Also, I wasn't aware Journey's tour was cut short. I thought he did all the shows, did he not?

I was refering to bloggers cutting him slack, not the band. But doing so is optional......

FF what was that allegory, a flacid what?   Men and their preoccupation with their third eye.

They did all of the summer shows, but they were supposed to head back out in November/December with Foreigner. Those dates were scrapped after it was decided that Arnel needed to rest. That's a good decision in my book.

But what's not a good decision, and where I agree with some questioning who Arnel is truly loyal to, is for Arnel to go on a solo tour and appear on TV back home seemingly weekly instead of resting his voice.

okay, wait...
WHAT THE HECK?

This is the version that was broadcast. This version was very dry and stark and you could hear every nuance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgN_vNJvHU8&feature=related

Now, listen to THIS version of the Superbowl deal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyLaczGpJSQ . This is a much more "live" sounding deal and he sounds great on it.

Is this a different audio layed over the SB show? Seriously, in the second version, it sounds fine.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

The second one is from high definition is what I read b/f on his site, and the same one posted over there again labeling it in stereo.

The HD version is digital so it's like listening to a dvd with surround sound as NBC uses four channels for those signals instead of two. The analog version is regular analog stereo. That takes away the flat sound, but not the other issues which cant be corrected so easily (holding notes too long, diction). It makes it sound clearer but doesn't fix anything vocally wrong with the performance.

Right, but holding notes out longer doesn't make a bad performance. In the HD version, it was far less jaring (even the pronunciation stuff) than the flat version. I dunno, just thought it was a weird difference that it could sound so radically different. When I hear the HD version, I'm not bothered by it. When I hear the other, yeah, it's not very good.

Though I agree w/ the diction issue, I just don't get the "holding notes too long" that most peeps here complain about. If Arnel's version is to hold the notes long enough to just set it apart from the original version, so be it. If he copies every oooohs and ahhhhs of Perry squirms, he will be called a trying-hard-to-be-a-Perry-sound-alike frontman. If he puts his own spin to the song, he gets hosed as well. Damn if you do, damn if you don't.
One thing is clear though, Neal and Jon has no qualms on how Arnel sings the songs.

What I think Arnel needs to do is to ditch that pinoy manager of his, hire a full time one based in the US and concentrate his career w/ Journey. Sing for Journey - and only for Journey. Be in a band for crying out loud.

Yeah, it's bullshit, quite frankly. Call me a bastard, because even though it is for charity, if he's got such a hard-on for a solo career, how about he waits until the 3 year contract is done?

At least focus on Journey totally until then.

As someone else noted, I got a lot of insight from his chat where it became drastically clear that the guy appears to just be a hired hand. Go do whatever the F you want, we'll let you know the dates we need you to sing and show up in the studio. Everything will be ready to go, just walk in sing..and be on your way. I didn't sense there was anything more than an employee/employer relationship.

No issue w/ charity work. He just needs to make sure he will be able to do his obligation w/ Journey. That is to come in and sing his butt off on key, not to come in sick, practice w/ the band before a gig etc. etc. They are his employer. They expect nothing less from an employee.

Seeing as Revelation didn't get any kind of bump on the sales chart, it looks like nobody else really cared how he sang the songs either.
The original version of DSB made a little jump on the Itunes charts but that's it, and even that could have more to do with being on the Bedtime Story soundtrack.
I think appearing in the pre-game is overhyped. John Legend actually dropped from 41 to 46 on the album charts, and Journey is MIA on the same chart. Jennifer Hudson got a little bump, 77 to 71 but nothing major. The Grammys will probably give her a bigger push.

I agree. The only way this is going to change though is to let him loose. Have him start his own legacy w/ the band. Sing new songs from the album. Get him involve in songwriting. Make him truly feel that he is part of the band.

I'd love to sit down with them and lay down the law (and have SJ, FF, and BJG for muscle) and tell them how the fuck things are going to go from here on out to retirement.

I think Journey zeroed in on the wrong song to promote the album. "Never walk away" was not a "grab-you-by-the-balls"kind of a song that unfortunately they heavily built-up. They could have gone w/ What you needed or TDTWT which I believe would have people talking. Also, as cheesy as it may sound, a music video would have helped them too.

I so agree. Arnel can't win on that one, it seems. He doesn't sound exactly like Perry on the old songs and I'm happy he isn't trying to copy it down to every Perryism on a song. New songs he doesn't sound like him at all.

If you are on tour in front of Journey fans, change it up of course. If you are performing for people who might not be fans, Best to do what you were hired for and let people think you're The SP of the Pacific.

It doesn't matter anyway, as I said. They didn't promote their album and the album chart reflects that. I really don't know what this performance accomplished in the end, besides giving us plenty of fodder for the forum.

He is being represented in the US by another firm. I forgot what it is called but it was mentioned by Bert de Leon, his Pinoy manager. Arnel wouldn't ditch Bert because apart from managing his career in the PI (admittedly, Bert did a wonderful job there as he got Arnel loads of TV appearances), Arnel is also very loyal to Bert.

I do agree though that Arnel should make Journey his top priority. TV guestings in the PI should be cut drastically to preserve his voice.

I think Journey should have put their stuff on itunes. They want to attract new fans but the ipod generation doesn't have easy access to the new album as it's not in the istore. The few people who may have had some interest after the performance probably went on itunes, saw the original Sony version DSB and grabbed it, that's why the small bump on the itunes chart. Even though Walmart has digital downloads, itunes is still the place to put your product if you are going for a new fanbase. Walmart gives you the initial sales rush, but when they're done with the marketing after a few months, your album is toast.

He shouldn't of apologized, and what exactly is so bad about his performance? am I missing something other than being a little "precious". You know, It's a real shame this guy didn't sing 150%! he sang it 95%? and probably felt worse insde than it actually looked and sounded. And you know what we are like as humans, we are how own biggest critics.

It's not like he bombed, or couldn't carry a strong sound, as far as I am concerned (on Arnels worst day, he's as good as anyone on their best day) honest opinion!.

The problem is Arnel reads blogs and lets himself get emotionaly injured by the comments. Notice how he brings up the word "detractors" again? The guy needs to really step up to the pro level and stop worrying about what people say. His constant acknowledgement of naysayers just gives empowerment to them as they can see it upsets him. The dude is a rockstar, he needs to act like one, walk tall, and stop worrying about stupid shit.

First step there would be to stay away from his own website.

To be honest I love it when he sounds just like Perry live on the older songs. That suits me just fine and gives Journey their legacy sound. When he veers off course due to illness or whatever he basically sounds fairly horrible to listen to, strained and nasally. He is better off sticking to his original game plan on the classics and riffing off Jimi Jamison on the new material. He doesn't appear to have a vocal identity of his own like for instance Perry, Gramm, Soto or even Augeri but he is able to offer a reasonable facsimile of pretty much anyone on the singing circuit.

It's all good as long as he sticks to the plan and realises that if he is to continue to sing Journey's catalogue he needs to focus on that and that alone, for the time being at least. He's done a marvelous job of it so far.
