I am trying to compare some early Journey Steve Perry era music to that of the new Journey. Here is what I have come up with so far.

Infinity and Evolution had some truly AWESOME songs, and were both incredible albums. The vocals and the writing espically on Infinity were incredible.

The first couple of new Journey CD's show alot of promise with their new music but I dont feel come even close to that of Infinity and Evolution. But songs like Remember Me, Higher Place & Heartland do stack up. The EP was also pretty good.

When Steve P. joined the band songs like Just The Same Way, Feeling That Way and Anytime hookd him up with Greg and they traded vocals throughout the songs. Why wouldnt current Journey do this with SteveA. and Deen????

Finally, I was listening to my Time 1 CD this morning and I had forgot about the song Good Times. Talk about a soul type of song. The song Knowing That You Love Me shows that same soulful Journey as Good Times. What album did Good Times appear on???

Deen & Steve sing together on Higher Place. Also, Deen's voice is briefly heard taking over on "Beyond the Clouds". It's subtle so u gotta listen for it. I agree, I think they should explore this more. The fans have been clamoring for duets now for years.

I wonder if the band view it as "trying to hard" to sound like they used to. I also think some Perry fans were accuse them (yet again) of milking their past, or imitating Perry years.

Finally, I was listening to my Time 1 CD this morning and I had forgot about the song Good Times. Talk about a soul type of song. The song Knowing That You Love Me shows that same soulful Journey as Good Times. What album did Good Times appear on???

Good Times was never released on a Journey album.

Was Good Times a remake, or was it a orginal Journey song? I am sure that answer is in my Time 3 booklet, but the long box Time 3 came in is packed away in a U Haul box that has yet to be unpacked yet.

Finally, Deen and Steve both have excellent voices that are VERY similiar. They( Journey) need to write some material where they both share the spotlight in the same song. They need to showcase this.

To me its very similiar to Tommy Shaw with Jack Blades when they shared the spotlight in many Damn Yankees songs. Tommy & Jack shared top billing on the My Hallunication CD which even though that it didnt sell well, was an excellent CD. Also, Tommy Shaw and Glen Burtnik worked and sounded excellent together when they were in Styx from 1999-2003.

Yogi, Good Times was a cover of a Sam Cooke song. I believe it was done for an old radio broadcast called "The King Biscuit Flour Hour" in 1978.

I hope his White Sox experience brings him back.

I saw his Strange Medicine Tour in San Antonio. To me he sounded AWESOME. Maybe I dont have the most sophisticated set of ears but he sounded twice as good as 99.5% of ANY singers past or present!!!!!!

If we're talking about obscure Journey tunes we lile, I nominate Natural Thing. Neal's guitar and Steve's voice work so well together in that song it's amazing. Anyone know the story behind that tune? When it was recorded and for what?

There's a bootleg cd of that show Yogi. I don't know where to tell you to look for it these days though.


I like Natural Thing too NIG. According to the Time3 booklet it was the b-side of DSB and recorded on 11/79.

I agree NIG, I LOVE that song. I don't know the story behind it though. I would love to hear that song live in concert, that is if I get a chance to see Journey in concert again.

Natural Thing is one of my all time favorite Journey songs. Its on out-take from the Departure album, and like Sherrie said it ended up on the B-side of DSB.

Natural Thing is a great song, we have played it infrequently as it is not a very recognizable song, but there are always a few in the audience that recognize it. Probably my favorite "obscure" Journey song would have to be "Sweet & Simple." Lyrically, songs like Natural Thing and Sweet & Simple were much different from the songs released after Jonathan Cain joined the band. I have to say, if you are going to compare different aspects of Journey, that one of the biggest changes Journey went through was the lyrical content of the songs when Cain replaced Rolie. Jonathan said that what he wanted to bring to the band was songs about the fans, which is absolutely clear in songs like DSB, Escape, etc etc....I like both aspects of the material, but it clearly was a change for the band.

It was already soaring when Gregg left. He said that he was crazy to leave at that time. Come on! Bad English, The Babys, Now! Cain's tinkly piano took Journey down a different path and no matter if it was Gregg or Cain, Perry's voice would have given Journey a signiture sound and I still believe that with Gregg, it would have made a lot more people happy.

I can agree with what you are saying...except Journey was more likely cruising at a low altitude until Jon entered. THEN Journey "soared". Jon's addition to the Baby's resulted in some hit singles. Bad English did well as well...even though their #1 song was not written by anyone within the band. You are missing the point if you are only pointing at his piano playing. HOWEVER, all that being said, I would prefer Gregg to Jon ANYDAY!

Of coarse not just his piano playing. The playing had it's moments with Classic Journey, but it will never really see the light again, imo. His writing skills are just not in tune with what Neal wants and the contrast between the lyrics and the music is out of sync. It's just nothing special anymore, imo. Neal wants a rock band and Cain couldn't do it for him then and he can't do it now. Again, imo.

More likely means the same as, I think, right Dave?
