JOURNEY SET TO RELEASE ‘REVELATION’ JUNE 3 EXCLUSIVELY AT WAL-MART

March 11, 2008 -- A new chapter in the legendary career of multi-Platinum rockers JOURNEY--Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums) and Arnel Pineda (vocals)—will begin on June 3 with the highly anticipated release of REVELATION, a three-disc CD and DVD package to be sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores in North America.

The first disc will consist of 11 re-recorded classics, the second is filled with 11 new songs, and the third is a live, in-concert DVD. All of the music on REVELATION was produced by Kevin Shirley (who previously worked with JOURNEY on their Platinum-certified TRIAL BY FIRE album).

JOURNEY will take REVELATION on the U.S. concert trail later this July, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.

I think they meant to say "...classics re-recorded". The re-recordings will not be classic. ;)

Nice Drew, I saw this as a My space bulletin and was in the process of making a topic. I must of missed something during the announcement at the concert. I knew the CD and DVD would be released, obviously...but they re-recorded the classics, AND they are putting it out? Damn...I know most people would argue this one, but I am pretty ecstatic they are making a move like this. What it says as a whole, is that they aren't fucking around anymore, they are SERIOUS about their new lead singer, and believe he will take them to the top again...or at least back in the race for a Grammy. 3 disc set..can't wait.

Seriously though...

I just don't understand the re-recording aspect of this whole thing. Didn't understand it with JSS and don't understand it now. Is it to further divide the on-line Journey fans? Some people will say, "Cool, this guy is great". Some will say "What are these bastards trying to do?". At the end of the day, no classic rock station or any other station is going to play a lick of those songs on the air.

So I guess it's just a marketing ploy so that the average shopper in Walmart will see the package and feel they are getting a pretty good deal.

I will say this, I absolutely loved the Bad Company album where the third singer did new covers of some Paul Rodgers-era songs. They were mixed in with a few originals. But those were re-worked with new twists, etc. I also saw a lot of inspiration for the project from the other members. Whenever I hear Jon or Neal playing the classics, it seems old and boring. I only pray they didn't try to match them note for note. It will be like the newer version of LRB's Cool Change. Ok, but lacking.

Just my opinion.

The band's publicist just sent this out...I think the press release appears today due to the mentions of the album this week, both here, as I reported on the frontpage and elsewhere.
I expect an expanded press release with more details will appear when ready.

One interesting aspect of this - the FIRST disc of the package is the re-recorded hits. That clearly suggests to me that the emphasis is being placed on that over the new tunes.

Also - price point - I'd expect this to be around $15...same as the REO package. Great value no doubt.

I met with some business folks this past week. Maybe in thier late 20's and musicians. Somehow we got talking about Steve Perry. I told the Journey just did some live shows with their new singer. Their response? "Oh, they decided to go on without Perry?" Thought it was funny.

It's probably the first disc so that the immediate response is "Oh, I love these songs!" Then they get into the new stuff. Bait and switch. :)

Really? God, I SO expected Don't Stop Believing, LTS... You know the rest. This might not be so bad then. At least it's not stuff that's been driven into the ground by constant touring and over playing. THIS kind of makes sense. Take old cuts that people MAY have heard earlier and redoing them, rather than taking their big hits and redoing them. If they had to record old material, I'm glad they did it this way. Some of these are some of their coolest songs (Lovin You is Easy and Eyes of a Woman are fantastic tunes! I WILL miss Smith's drum sound on EOAW). Can Do and Spaceman? weird.

Ugh, this IS disgusting. Just when I thought they'd reached a new low giving away "free" copies of Generations away at the gate. Now they try to piggyback the new stuff on the back of bastardized classics. If I do end up buying this I'll throw the bastard disc right in the trash.

I'm not making any judgement until I hear this package.

I have been hesitant to adopt the new singer, but have been covering the band hopefully with some fair coverage.

I really like what I hear from these 3 new tunes. I just sent Neal and e-mail (we haven't communicated much since the departure of JSS) and congratulated him on the sound of the new tunes and promised to give the album a fair go.

If I really like it - then I'll consider myself converted.

Thanks for posting the press release. I received the same one on the space I have on MySpace. I'll give the new stuff a listen. But I really like the old stuff and will leave well enough alone on that part.

I like the new tunes too 'drew. Just sickened a bit the way they're trying to put this out. At least Speedwagon put the new stuff out front with a live cd and special interview disc.

Perhaps Perry could go and re-record the Arrival and Generations tunes now on his own, eh? I'd pay good money for that CD.

I really look forward to hearing (though I doubt we will) a dig or two from Perry about these re-recordings.

I thought someone here posted that although Journey didn't need any permission from Perry to perform tracks he wrote or co-wrote live in concert, that they would indeed need Perry's permission to record these songs in a studio??? Is this not true? I guess it isn't true, because I just don't see Perry EVER signing off on this, no matter how much money was in it for him!

They did the Greatest Hits with Arnel because WalMart approached them with a deal and asked them to. It's just money in the bank for them.

I think that's where the 10 or 11 year deal that recently expired comes into play.

I am trying to see the decision to re-record the classics from the band's perspective for a moment. They see the songs as owned by Journey, and they have every right to do with them what they want. They feel even more justified because the singer (Steve Perry) left the band and decided not to sing the classics with Journey anymore. Since the other band members do not want to be left orphaned, they have to find another copy of "The Voice" to continue celebrating their legacy with. Now that they have a singer who can actually hit most of the notes that Steve Perry can hit, they need to parade him and let the world know that he is every bit as good as Steve Perry in their eyes.

On the other hand, I feel like the band is going to be taking a very big risk by their willingness to "bastardize" the classics (and I quote). A portion of their hardcore fans are not going to be pleased with this decision. It's hard to tell what the overall reaction will be, regardless of how good Arnel covers Steve Perry. Many fans see no more reason to re-record these rock classics than they do the Beatles classics without Lennon or McCartney.

I was pumped about the new album, and someone said that Journey decided not to go this route just the other day. Now I hear this, and my initial reaction is disappointment, even if they are not the dirty dozen. Will I still support the band? Of course... Journey still rocks in my book. You gotta give Neal credit for keeping this train rolling. I'm sure he is doing what he thinks is best... and I think it's better than retiring Journey.

I too am in a wait and see pattern. The Arnel can definitely sing and sounds pretty good on some of the stuff. A little off on the timing for me. It actually makes me realize how short Augeri fell. I never got excited one ounce by Augeri. Arnel is clearly superior to him as far as the legcy sound goes.

Don't like the re-recording idea at all, so that has me turned off.

And then lastly, something others have said regarding the new songs, they are rehashed. I thought Arival tried to match what was on TBF, like TBF was their lost opportunity and they were going to try and recapture it. I'm hearing the same exact thing so far. It's not right to try and go for a grammy by trying to reproduce a song that almost got them there. That says to me that the prize is more valuable than the artistry. Whether or not you liked any of the Perry-era albums, you were always assured that the music was going to go in some different direction. That ended after TBF.

Add in all of that with the lack of respect this band has had for the fans and it's going to be hard to overcome. I do not like their cast of characters at all.
