This running argument sounds like nostalgia too.

1) They aint supposed to not sound like Journey..and they do have a distinctive sound.

2) How does "Wildest Dream" or "Change for the Better" sound dated...or like 80's nostalgia? Very fresh sounding tracks. So too is "What I needed" to a lesser extent. "Where did I lose your love" and "Never Walk Away" do sound dated.

The 'distictive sound' is 80's pop music.

Oh, please, I have no intention of going back and relistening to Revelation...All I can say is that every song on there sounded like 80's pop to me.

Pete, can I call you Outlaw Pete?, you want them to sound like 80's pop, still? This is where they lose all respect. No one is ever going to argue the talent the band carries, however, many will question their courage to play something different(which they never do), and try to remain, relevant(there;s the "R" word again). The critics, I'd say most of them, rightfully categorize Journey as "not serious." I could have used many words here, but the fact is, any band can rely on a sum of popular hits made in their heyday. Yeah, they had a killer 7 year or so run, but have done nothing after 1996, to merit any respect. They put out the same old tired type of songs, same type of lyrics, and a lot of the songs sound the exact same; with just different titles. They got miraculously lucky to find Pineda, and what do they do? Continue to be a jukebox band, playing the same old tired songs and same old tired sound. For God's sake, you have a singer is a chameleon, use him. Reinvent yourselves, take a fucking chance! Friga won't allow that although I bet Schon would agree to to gamble a bit.

Because Journey, was always a band that looked forward in their music and songwriting. Sure, the past always influenced them. But, they were never a band to look back and retread their own work. To me, it's mediocre and does not challenge me as a listener - at all. It's boring.

Look no further than TNC's signature line-

"The very nature of the band's name implies change and movement, and you must go with that." -Steve Perry

Makes me want Perry back even more with his line of thinking.

Change for the Better and Wildest Dream are fresh sounding tracks. Bottom line. I'm sure you went in with a mindset and that was it...thats how you are Monker. You've been a narrow minded dick of critic for years and years of the band. Move on....talk about someone not looking forward. Jesus.

You're wrong. There is not a single song on Revelation that doesn't sound like a throwback to the 80's. That was not something I was expecting... Maybe I have been critical of the band...but mediocrity should be critiqued...as is said in this thread.

You're right, Neal's guitar work also sounds like 80's pop.

You right, Neal's guitar work sounds like dated 80's music.

Chickenfoot is a great example of a band allowing themselves to be influenced by their past, but not allowing their past to consume them and still sounding modern and interesting. And, Satriani sounds more like Neal should sound like today then Neal Schon himself does. It's no wonder to my why PlanetUS died, and Chickenfoot has everybody excited and shows no signs of letting up any time soon.

It's funny, one of Herbie's critiques in "Castles Burning" was that Ross did not expand his knowledge of his instrument or try to become a better basss player. Nowadays, they are ALL complacent like that - and that is not good.

I see what you are saying... but more people want Journey to sound like Journey (and i dont just mean the vocals) than people who want change. I want a bit of both

The Chickenfoot comparison is a good one, but they have new parts playing together. I just don't see a bunch of 50-60 somethings that have played together this long recreating themselves at this point. Best way to do that is to go back in time and bring back Rolie. That would create a buzz and would lend a new perspective on the songwriting.

I'll admit...there will forever be the challenge to be the "R" word and unfortunately, I don't see that ever happening. I have realized that for some time, and have enjoyed them for what they are. I am the first to admit though...having seen two rounds of Pineda fronted Journey...I don't have a great desire to see them again, unless they are going to mix it up a bit on stage.

If you want something new and fresh, I think they need to break up and start something new...ala Chickenfoot. Maybe Friga can get together with some new bandmates and call themselves Cameltoe. :)

Sincerely...Outlaw Pete
