To quote a fictional megalomaniacal bastard: "I can feel your anger..."
I believe he could pull it off, based on the comments by those 'in the know' regarding his recent work.
Well, those people aren't exactly objective sources, are they?
There are only a handful of people on this planet with enough balls to criticise the vocals of Steve Perry. Those who are otherwise controversial or negative will find themselves in the trunk of a sedan at the bottom of a river.
Even if it weren't "1982 quality", I think he's got enough talent and showmanship to just knock the crowd off their feet.
I don't.
See, I can only compare it to today's performance by Arnel. The fact that we have seen and heard Pineda kick the shit out of that song only added to the depression most of us felt by the performance. The fact that Perry was once the greatest vocalist of all time is something that will become an insurmountable weight if he couldn't pull it off.
The fact that he is Steve Perry isn't good for me. Like Arnel, SA, and JSS, he has to do the song justice. If not, I don't want him back. And I don't see how anyone -- even a LOON -- could think otherwise.
I'm amazed at how often young people (early 20's) tell me how much they love Journey and know their music. It's a testament to the timelessness of the music.
Amen.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
