Yeah, I've always compared the feeling of singing up on stage to the same thrill I get running through my viens when speeding in my car. Try it sometime. If you want to feel what it's like getting up on stage and singing in front of tons of people but you don't have a band, just get in your car and go about 135mph down a busy freeway weaving in and out of freeway traffic and see what that's like. It's a mixure of pure excitement, thrill and being scared all rolled into one. Very addictive in some cases.

So that's what Arnel was in for.....speeding. But the good part of this type of speeding is you won't get a ticket for going over the speed limit like you will in a car.

The blogging that's going on right now about Journey not being Journey without Steve is incredible. Here are a couple I recieved:

Baltimore Sun:
Speaking of audio glitches, the band might still call itself Journey, but it's not Journey without Steve Perry, no matter how much the replacement singer might sound like him.

Chicago Tribune:
3:21 pm When did Journey lead singer Steve Perry become a young Filipino fellow, and how did this new guy get Steve Perry's old hair? ...

Schenectady NY Gazette;
I just tuned into the pregame show, and there was some Journey-wannabe band playing "Don't Stop Believing'." It had to be a Journey cover band because Steve Perry wasn't the lead singer.

Oh, that was Journey? Who was that lead singer? He tried sounding like Perry, but wasn't even close.

Coalmarch Productions-The Blog:
Super Bowl XLIII is moments away, and I think I’ve wasted a decent amount of my day with NBC on in the background. At last check, Journey’s Steve Perry wannabe was doing some creepy eye-rolling thing every time he hit the high notes in “Don’t Stop Believing.”

There must not be anything interesting for these news agencies to report on if all they have to work with is talking about a live performance of a band.

i knew that was coming, they should have passed the gig. He nailed the shit this summer.Every chance they had to promote the band, they blew it, they blew it with the morning show in 2001, and at Sturgis, even though they pumped Steve A and Fag Friga with lipped vocals they still blow it everytime. The band is fucked when it come to there lead singers. They need to to do the right shit at the right time. Kill me but Jeremey would have nailed that fucker, and there would be all kinds of good shit posted about it

Yeah, but legend has it Jeremey passed up on the opportunity to join Journey completely on his own. I thought Jeremey was very good, it was that youtube vid someone posted where he was singing with JSS at what looked like someones backyard bbq.

His accent is so noticeable .... he kept singing "booolevard"

It was just awful. And I agree, the crowd was more interested in getting their faces on television. You know, DSB is such a classic song and it is and will always be synonymous with Steve Perry - no one will ever come close to sounding like he did on it and who on this planet doesn't associate this song with him and his voice?? It's a signature song, much like Frank Sinatra singing My Way or New York, New York...that's just the way it is........ it will never change.... no matter who will attempt to sing this song, people will always associate it with Perry.

Arnel really DID nail it this summer. I went to the first show in Denver. I had front row, center seats and he was incredible! I felt really bad for the band today.

I honestly believe their biggest mistake (besides letting Perry get away) was not to run with what Soto had to offer.

Maybe he didn't nail the old songs, but I thought he rocked pretty hard and could have brought Journey into the millenium by changing the path Journey would take into a harder edged sound.

It seems to me that the band continues to pursue what worked for them years ago instead of creating a hard rocking band that Soto could have brought to the table. Just my thought

I agree. AP is a very good singer but I think he will continue to struggle with the catalog and have on and off performances. I would have preferred to see them carry on with JSS and changed it up a bit and move forward in a new direction.....but I really like what JSS is doing since Journey...we might not have gotten that and what he has to bring in the future if he was still with the band.

Maybe it's the loon in me, but I have to think that if it were SP singing that song, with that band, on that stage, the crowd would have gone FREAKING WILD! Given the groups that have performed in the past few years (Springsteen, Prince, etc) a trip down memory lane is what the fans wanna see. As popular as DSB has been even in recent months/years, it would have been HUGE with SP on vocals. No one else (even JSS) could pull that one off and get the same response, IMO.

The only way they'd give a crap is if Perry could pull it off; he doesn't have the technical skill required anymore. And if these people have a modicum of sense in them, they wouldn't be simply won over just because it's Steve Perry.

Man, I was sold on Arnel til tonight. It wasn't horrible at all, but it was a decline from earlier, which is a bad sign. He needs to move here permanently if he wants to be taken seriously in this job. After seeing Jeremey live in December, I wish he would have gotten the gig

Perry would have been huge! But the atmosphere of the setting was a bit drab to be honest. It looked bloody cold too!

 :P

I believe he could pull it off, based on the comments by those 'in the know' regarding his recent work. Even if it weren't "1982 quality", I think he's got enough talent and showmanship to just knock the crowd off their feet. I'm amazed at how often young people (early 20's) tell me how much they love Journey and know their music. It's a testament to the timelessness of the music.

Well, those people aren't exactly objective sources, are they?

There are only a handful of people on this planet with enough balls to criticise the vocals of Steve Perry. Those who are otherwise controversial or negative will find themselves in the trunk of a sedan at the bottom of a river. :?

Even if it weren't "1982 quality", I think he's got enough talent and showmanship to just knock the crowd off their feet.

I don't.

See, I can only compare it to today's performance by Arnel. The fact that we have seen and heard Pineda kick the shit out of that song only added to the depression most of us felt by the performance. The fact that Perry was once the greatest vocalist of all time is something that will become an insurmountable weight if he couldn't pull it off.

The fact that he is Steve Perry isn't good for me. Like Arnel, SA, and JSS, he has to do the song justice. If not, I don't want him back. And I don't see how anyone -- even a LOON -- could think otherwise.

I'm amazed at how often young people (early 20's) tell me how much they love Journey and know their music. It's a testament to the timelessness of the music.

he could have pulled it off without breakin a sweat

You always dog Madsplash. It's funny.

Ah... young love.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

As popular as DSB has been even in recent months/years, it would have been HUGE with SP on vocals. No one else (even JSS) could pull that one off and get the same response, IMO.

It's just the loon in you.

The only way they'd give a crap is if Perry could pull it off; he doesn't have the technical skill required anymore. And if these people have a modicum of sense in them, they wouldn't be simply won over just because it's Steve Perry.

Just a disclaimer here: Madsplash is not one of those 'in the know!'

I was referring to UJB, Randy J, and Lora. The first two I would consider objective, and my experience with Lora is that she wouldn't say anything at all unless she could tell it like it is. I trust her assessment whole-heartedly. 8)

If Perry had been there, they wouldn't have been playing a lousy tailgate party they'd have been playing half-time!

And there ya go. Thanks Dave.
