That is one of the very reasons I like JSS. 2 songs that I never even really noticed years ago or that I heard but didn't really care too much about are now 2 songs I really like. Ok in one case looooooooove..........Crazy and Frozen. The tiny bit of edge that JSS's vocals add to those songs, made all the difference to me I guess. 
And with the mix of rock/metal/pop/funk that he throws into his shows, definately one of the funnest I've been to in a long time. A lot like Journey in that way........if you listen to Infinity, Frontiers and TBF......they couldn't sound more differently vocally and musically. I love it when vocalists/bands change it up...........keeps me intrigued. Find it funny you used Steve Perry as an example.......IMO, one of the best vocal chameleons, throughout his catalogue.
I don't think Perry was a vocal chameleon at all. If a song comes on that Perry is singing, can you identify it immediately? I bet so. Which is why I'd say Perry is not a vocal chameleon.
