Granted the youtube clips I've seen are poor quality, but it sounds to me like the guy is speaking English and speaking it quite well. It also sounds like he is speaking the language of his audience part of the time.

Actually just because an opinion is different than yours, it doesn't make it 'erroneous'. Just different.

Correct. In Hong Kong, his shows were frequented by Americans & English & he spoke in English all the time. In the Philippines where all the YouTube videos were shot, it depended on his audience on any given nite. If he had English speakers in the audience, he spoke primarily in English. If Filipino, he spoke primarily in Tagalog. If a mixture, he mixed it up depending on who a request came from. If he was responding to a request in Tagalog, it would not be natural to speak in English. His written and spoken English is just about as fluent as urs or mine.

Really? Is there a 'fluency in English' meter that I don't know about? :?

Huh? Are u & I writing to each other fluently in English? I'm not comprehending.

Susie,

Someone's 'fluency in English' is not a matter of fact. You can think he's fluent, whereas I can think he is not. I don't think there is a "standard" set for determining how fluent someone is. It's not a black & white situation. There are all different levels of fluency. So to tell someone that their opinion on how well Arnel uses the English language is 'erroneous' is, well... erroneous.

Fluency is a matter of fact...not opinion. He is either fluent in English or he's not. He sounded like he was speaking English pretty well to me.

flu·ent /ˈfluənt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[floo-uhnt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective 1. spoken or written with ease: fluent French.
2. able to speak or write smoothly, easily, or readily: a fluent speaker; fluent in six languages.
3. easy; graceful: fluent motion; fluent curves.
4. flowing, as a stream.
5. capable of flowing; fluid, as liquids or gases.
6. easily changed or adapted; pliant.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Origin: 1580–90; < L fluent- (s. of fluéns) flowing, prp. of fluere; see -ent]

—Related forms
flu·en·cy, flu·ent·ness, noun
flu·ent·ly, adverb

—Synonyms 1, 2. Fluent, glib, voluble may refer to a flow of words. Fluent suggests the easy and ready flow of an accomplished speaker and is usually a term of commendation: a fluent and interesting speech. Glib implies an excessive fluency divorced from sincerity or profundity; it often suggests talking smoothly and hurriedly to cover up or deceive, not giving the hearer a chance to stop and think; it may also imply a plausible, prepared, and well-rehearsed lie: He had a glib answer for everything. Voluble implies the overcopious and often rapid flow of words characteristic of a person who loves to talk: She overwhelmed him with her voluble answer. See also eloquent.

Yes, I do consider myself fluent in my native language. Other people (with perhaps more education/intelligence or from another geographical area) may not agree so much. And that's my point. There is no set standard for one's ability to speak or understand the spoken word. It is a broad spectrum.

Just don't state opinion as fact. There, is that fluent enough? :?

Did u read the dictionary definition above?

U can take this to the bank: Arnel is just about as fluent in English as u or I. Therefore, he is fluent by ur standards & by mine. There have been a lot of erroneous statements posted here about Arnel. That is just one of them. Sorry.

Fluency is subjective. What I feel is fluent isn't necessarily what someone else deems fluent. Some take pronunciation into account, other's do not. There's a very distinct division in whether or not you can be understood or not, but that doesn't necessarily mean you are fluent.

Personally, he's fluent enough, but he does speak occasionally with an accent. That matters not. It matters only if it comes through when he sings, and then, that's just for me.... it may not matter to others.

As for the "locknload" name reference, he's into riding motorcycles (big motorcycles) so its fair to say he's macho.

Funny, the guy down the street from me has 2 big Harley's and he is openly gay. :lol:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluency

Language fluency is proficiency in a language, most typically foreign language or another learned language. In this sense, "fluency" actually encompasses a number of related but separable skills:

Reading: the ability to easily read and understand texts written in the language;
Writing: the ability to formulate written texts in the language;
Comprehension: the ability to follow and understand speech in the language;
Speaking: the ability to speak in the language and be understood by its speakers.

There are many accents in the US. IMHO Augeri spoke (& sang) w/a NY accent. I have a distinct Chicago accent. I imagine u probably have a CA accent. Jeff has one of those too but it's different from Perry's CA accent. Arnel's accent is very slight but when he flips into his native tongue onstage in the Philippines, it could come across as lack of fluency to some ears who dont hear the quick flip.

Why dont u wait until u get to hear Arnel speak English at length & then form an opinion. Until u do that, u dont really know for sure. I realize neither of u intend to go to a Journey concert, but I'm sure boots/videos will surface & perhaps u could take a moment of ur day to listen to them. Then we could take this discussion up again. Deal?
