Isn't he already Idle?

But, no I don't think we'll see him on American Idol.

To sell millions requires promotion of his Journey roots and I don't see anyone fronting the capital for marketing that without a tour to follow. If he tours , he has to sing Journey songs whether he likes it or not. If he could still sing that catalog now, even an octave lower, I think he would have done so already. If word got out that he was only doing his solo stuff, the tour would be dead after two weeks.

I stilll say he will do it his way, his time with him driving the vehicle. The younger generation that likes DSB. Total Ipod generations. My teenager doesn't even purchase CD's anymore, only downloads electronically. So would Itunes, or his own website be the avenue. My guess would be yes. He would be in control. PR - I don't see it happening with him. Uncle Joe, Ray Foley are only a handful of media personell that he might trust... Open up his website - jez have you ever google SP. There is stuff out there every day. When Journey tours, his name is always in the article.. So why invest money in PR when you can get it for free. JMO

That's true. And didn't he say once, not that long ago, that he wouldn't want to be out there doing the same stuff at the same time Journey was doing it? I wouldn't be looking for and kind of tour anyway (just don't expect that would happen), but if he meant that... then there you go.

Not laughing at you, Annpea, but this point is so far-fetched it made me lol  . I don't think he would need to do that as he already has a sizeable Japanese fanbase that reveres him and most definitely remembers his time with Journey. Have Sony spread the word, and I'll bet he'll sell loads of copies (at least in Japan).

You're pretty well on the money there, annie. He doesn't need to get in bed with Journey to pull it off.

It's all about touring. No tour = No Sony = No marketing.
Japanese fans loved Journey Pre ROR. Steve Perry sans Journey is a different matter. I'm not saying he should not put anything out but Millions of units selling is just not realistic.

No major label is gonna pump the money it would take to put something out given the amount of other acts that are out there that could complete a full tour schedule with no resistance. It would be different if he had only been away without something new for a few years. 14 is another story. He'd have to put it out himself and strike a side marketing deal. His base would go far and wide for him, so it would do him good to start an interaction with them to pump up new material ahead of time to bring back the non loons that loved him, but have moved on.

See, I don't get this perception that people suddenly got turned off to Journey when ROR was released. So, they only sold 4m copies vs. 6m for Frontiers vs. 10m for Escape (or whatever the figures were/are). There was a definite decline in interest as the years went by, so far as sales figures go ..., maybe because Journey had peaked in '83 (and not because of any change in musical direction).

I know .... many American J fans despised ROR because it didn't "rock" enough ... but general feedback tells me many music fans in Europe, Asia, and Australia loved ROR. Some there even considered ROR 2nd only to Escape as best they ever recorded.

Success is defined as having a 12" Penise and knowing where to put it.

How this relates to music I do not know, but it relates to a mans success.

If a man is sticking it in all the wrong places, the 12" Penise is a burden and not a Gift !!

I was in Japan during that time and after. Hairbands were all the rage over there in 1986 and Journey was going the opposite direction including almost NO Japanese tour dates for the Album and a new sound that was not anything like Bon Jovi, Winger or the the other groups that were catching the attention of the Japanese press at that time. Aerosmith, Guns and Roses and Poison were all getting promotion while Journey faded into the backround. 80-84, Journey owned Japan, after that, they fell off the map.

I don't think it will either, but not just for the reasons you list. Frankly, I don't think Revelation was a hit because of either Arnel or the Journey name.

Take away the DVD of greatest hits (packed with Perry era tunes). Take away the CD of Arnel singing greatest hits (that Perry made famous). Take away the "2 CDs and a DVD for peanuts" price point.

What you're left with is something similar saleswise to Journey with Steve Augeri.

I think, Japan is not the only Asian fanbased country; and a theory is just what it is a theory; and my theory is that some fences need to mended and some new bridges need to be crossed, thus creating a strong base of support that each one could fall back on if need be. I, also said *openly* because I cannot blindly believe that they don't interact on some level that we the fans don't and probably never will know of; a divided fanbase is no different than any broken home someone's gonna come out short changed. A connected fanbase will support both without all the God damned confusion that's floating around at this time.

But... Steve Perry does have the name Journey attached because he made it what it was to start with. You basically never hear Journey talked about with the words "Steve Perry" coming into it. And you never hear Steve Perry talked about without the word "Journey". "Former lead singer of Journey..." or "Steve Perry of Journey..." He's got that name attached whether he wants it or not.

Does that mean it would sell the way Revelation did? Well... Strange Medicine hit 500,000 and so did Revelation (we're talking physical copies, not gold vs. platinum status). Yes I know, Strange Medicine was 14 years ago... would he hit or surpass the same numbers today? Proper marketing, the availability of digital downloads... could happen. If its done right, yes, it could match or pass Revelation.

You're right, BJG, but Steve did the FTLOSM tour. So it would entail Steve Perry really supporting a new album and getting out there and touring and making appearances and promoting it, and I just don't see that happening. Maybe if 12 years had not gone by, I would have thought possibly. But that's a long time without releasing anything or singing, and he is 60. But I believe he could release an album and not tour and it still be pretty successful. As far as the amount of copies sold without touring, I have no clue. I'll leave that up to someone else to make a guess.

Well no one knows for sure, all we can do it pretend we know what we're talking about and guess all day. But I don't accept people using his age as a reason why he wouldn't/couldn't do something. Roger Daltrey is almost 65 and he still does it. He's gonna brain himself good with that fucking mic one of these days the way he still swings it like its 1970 but that's not the point. Frankie Valli has to be older than god and he still does it too. All these guys that are upwards of 60 have taken 5, 10 plus years off and came back to it, so I don't see a reason why he couldn't if he wanted to.

Good point, BJG. If he wanted to, contrary to what some say, I still believe his voice is good enough to do it. I just mentioned his age in regards to how much time has passed with no move towards it. But, hey, he may feel better now than when he was 50. If we see photos of him out running or working out in the gym, we'll know he's getting ready for a tour

If I ever see him at Cinnabon, I'm snapping a picture, whether he likes it or not.
