Isn't he already Idle?
But, no I don't think we'll see him on American Idol.

Not laughing at you, Annpea, but this point is so far-fetched it made me lol. I don't think he would need to do that as he already has a sizeable Japanese fanbase that reveres him and most definitely remembers his time with Journey. Have Sony spread the word, and I'll bet he'll sell loads of copies (at least in Japan).

It's all about touring. No tour = No Sony = No marketing.
Japanese fans loved Journey Pre ROR. Steve Perry sans Journey is a different matter. I'm not saying he should not put anything out but Millions of units selling is just not realistic.

See, I don't get this perception that people suddenly got turned off to Journey when ROR was released. So, they only sold 4m copies vs. 6m for Frontiers vs. 10m for Escape (or whatever the figures were/are). There was a definite decline in interest as the years went by, so far as sales figures go ..., maybe because Journey had peaked in '83 (and not because of any change in musical direction).
I know .... many American J fans despised ROR because it didn't "rock" enough ... but general feedback tells me many music fans in Europe, Asia, and Australia loved ROR. Some there even considered ROR 2nd only to Escape as best they ever recorded.

I was in Japan during that time and after. Hairbands were all the rage over there in 1986 and Journey was going the opposite direction including almost NO Japanese tour dates for the Album and a new sound that was not anything like Bon Jovi, Winger or the the other groups that were catching the attention of the Japanese press at that time. Aerosmith, Guns and Roses and Poison were all getting promotion while Journey faded into the backround. 80-84, Journey owned Japan, after that, they fell off the map.

I think, Japan is not the only Asian fanbased country; and a theory is just what it is a theory; and my theory is that some fences need to mended and some new bridges need to be crossed, thus creating a strong base of support that each one could fall back on if need be. I, also said *openly* because I cannot blindly believe that they don't interact on some level that we the fans don't and probably never will know of; a divided fanbase is no different than any broken home someone's gonna come out short changed. A connected fanbase will support both without all the God damned confusion that's floating around at this time.annie89509 wrote:annpea wrote:Number, one just having the loyal fan base that he has will be a huge factor; Number two He will have to start courting the media; he's gonna have to learn to trust them; the media of yesterday no longer exist; there's a whole new breed of media personalities today; Number three, he's gonna have to start openly interacting with the other band members, openly embracing Arnel as a friend would help pull in a stronger Asian fanbase, just as Arnel being Journey's frontman has done for them, and finally marketing, the younger generation has money but we have more money, and we (fans) love exposing our children to the best; that's two generations right there alone with a third coming up fast, My grandchildren know more about Journey and Steve Perry than need be. But... Steve Perry does have the name Journey attached because he made it what it was to start with. You basically never hear Journey talked about with the words "Steve Perry" coming into it. And you never hear Steve Perry talked about without the word "Journey". "Former lead singer of Journey..." or "Steve Perry of Journey..." He's got that name attached whether he wants it or not.
Does that mean it would sell the way Revelation did? Well... Strange Medicine hit 500,000 and so did Revelation (we're talking physical copies, not gold vs. platinum status). Yes I know, Strange Medicine was 14 years ago... would he hit or surpass the same numbers today? Proper marketing, the availability of digital downloads... could happen. If its done right, yes, it could match or pass Revelation.

You're right, BJG, but Steve did the FTLOSM tour. So it would entail Steve Perry really supporting a new album and getting out there and touring and making appearances and promoting it, and I just don't see that happening. Maybe if 12 years had not gone by, I would have thought possibly. But that's a long time without releasing anything or singing, and he is 60. But I believe he could release an album and not tour and it still be pretty successful. As far as the amount of copies sold without touring, I have no clue. I'll leave that up to someone else to make a guess.

Well no one knows for sure, all we can do it pretend we know what we're talking about and guess all day.But I don't accept people using his age as a reason why he wouldn't/couldn't do something. Roger Daltrey is almost 65 and he still does it. He's gonna brain himself good with that fucking mic one of these days the way he still swings it like its 1970 but that's not the point.
Frankie Valli has to be older than god and he still does it too. All these guys that are upwards of 60 have taken 5, 10 plus years off and came back to it, so I don't see a reason why he couldn't if he wanted to.

If we see photos of him out running or working out in the gym, we'll know he's getting ready for a tour
