Not sure if you are talking US festival here, but if so, there were quite a few AOR bands. Just to name a few VH, Scorpions, Triumph, Pretenders, INXS, U2, Quarterflash, Missing Persons, Berlin.....

Scorpions, Van Halen, Triumph, Missing Persons and Berlin are AOR?

What would you classify these groups as? And if these are not AOR bands, then neither is Journey.

Scorpions are usually classifed under heavy metal (or "classic metal," LOL). Van Halen and Triumph have always been hard rock.

Missing Persons and Berlin were a part of the American branch of the new wave/new romantic movements, AFAIK. Not AOR like Journey (early Journey is prog), Foreigner, Survivor, etc.

Broad labels can get silly to a point... I don't think there's any disputing that VH from 1984 on has more in common with bands like Journey and Foreigner than it does with VH's earlier output.

So would you prefer it if we refer to VH as "hard rock/AOR," then?

Not necessarily. There are bands that are truly "progressive" (few and far between, though) while all the classic ('70s/'80s) acts are classed as "Prog" (capital "P") or neo-prog. New bands that emulate the '70s symphonic style are just called retro or retro-prog.

There are a lot of bands that straddle prog and symphonic rock/AOR, like Saga (diehard fans argue they're prog, but that's bullshit).

Then you have hybrid styles like avant-prog and prog-fusion.

I just listen to whatever the fuck I like, and let all the other boneheads argue.

Porky Treat and Blopeth "defy" labelling? How so? (Sorry for poking fun at their names, I just do that...)

You also have to consider the timeframe for the band. They hadn't released anything new or toured in two years, so they, as a band, weren't relevant on top 10 radio at that particular moment. They were all still dipping their hands into their solo material (Street Talk was simmering down at this point, Neal was doing various side projects and Vital Information was just starting to take off). I would also imagine that this was the time when the shit started to hit the fan regarding the lineup changes. Maybe they just weren't a willingly functional band at the time?

Relevancy doesn't really mean anything in a situation like Live Aid, which by the way was and is a GREAT cause. Bob Geldof was never really "relevant" and Paul McCartney had nothing out new did he?

I think Journey would have tore that place up to be honest.

I think that alot of these bands listed above were regarded by the powers that be (Geldof and friends) as either being sell outs or not cool. Alot of the talent that played was either reflective of a new period in music, new wave/new british invasion (thereby being soooo cooool) or they were so huge you couldn't ignore them, (McCartney, Queen, U2.)

I wonder if Lora or Cyndi have any input on this subject. It would be interesting to know what went on.

I love reading your posts for so many reasons Carla, but today I confess your English made me giggle. Gender is male/female, genre is a style type. Gave your comments quite a different flavour ;)

Bob Geldof is on record as saying he was quite cynical about the line up - if you were selling big at the time, then he tried to get you. If Journey were in hiatus at the time, maybe they just weren't shifting enough albums at that moment to be asked.

My money says they weren't interested in playing. They just don't come across as that sort of band. They stay out of political conversations and never write songs based on real life issues.

They just like shit about a small town girl livin in a fuckin lonley world

I love reading your posts for so many reasons Carla, but today I confess your English made me giggle. Gender is male/female, genre is a style type. Gave your comments quite a different flavour ;)
