He didn't have any voice left, a shitload of heat tiles was hitting his face or whatever. It really doesn't matter. It may be douchey, but deciding whether or not to do the surgery was choice; not Friga's or Neal's, even though the right thing would've been to get it over with and get the tour started.

You'll be out of the hospital in a weeks time, but full recovery takes at least a few months.

They gave him almost 2 years to decide what he was going to do, and when that time was up he was no closer to a decision. Probably because of the reasons you mentioned.

If I had to wager on the real reason he didn't come back, I would bet my house he hated Cain and Schon with a passion at that time. There has to be a story in there somewhere where personalities clashed big time...there just has to be. It's just Perry looks like the bad guy because he is the one who "left" or "doesn't sing for Journey anymore." The other two guys look like victims here, because they appear to have been "abandoned."

This was not 2010 and SP is not Joepa ...
You know people have different levels of pain tolerance and there is a huge difference between dashing around on
stage gig after gig and standing on a sideline making calls/decisions!! Noone said this hip thing just happened at that moment.
As intelligent as you and SJ seem to be, you both do very good impressions of
dumb and dumber ...insert *duh face*

Woah, I was actually on Perry's side on this one. Partially anyways. The Hawaii story is a blatant lie, but still, if the guy didn't want to do it anymore, then that's his prerogative. Sure, he came off as a dick, holding the band in hiatus for 2 years as SJ said, and then started bitching about cracking the stone, but who cares. Seriously.

He's a one of a kind singer, and is by far the best rock and roll singer of all time. He had that something that just a handful of artists have/had (early Gaye, Redding and Nina Simone). I'd beat up a few babies and kill a dozen kittens just to see him with Journey.

That's why decades after the fact and the band itself having gone through a few singers, Perry is still being recognized by these Nostalgia media publications with awards and titles like the one Classic Rock bestowed upon him.

You can say that again. One guy loves what he does and works, and the other guy makes excuses and feels sorry for himself.

I would bet that Paterno moves more during a game than Perry would during a concert. Additionally, he is out in the freezing cold, the rain and the snow, not in an amphitheater or a stage with a cover over it.

You and a few others here do this. It's no one!!!

Steve Perry has said that more than once. Here's an example:

"It was debilitating enough that it shut my life down," Perry says of the accident that sidelined him two years ago. "I was ready to tour and the whole thing, but every doctor I went to said it would need major surgery. The good news is I'm on the other side of it."

You're a Michigan fan aren't you?! Did you not see Joe Pa sprint, yes I said sprint down the field after the game after the zebras protesting another bullshit call that favored Michigan? About 10 years ago or so...I will never forget the old man tracking the black and whites, and he literally ran them down. He was pissed and rightfully so. Penn St. got hosed on a horrible call. I better stop now, I am sounding like S2M.

Enough. OK?

Sorry, I'm with Dan here. There's more than meets the eye. Along with the aforementioned Joe Pa example, I know a guy NOW 61 who still plays basketball and tennis with 20-somethngs. Guy just had a hip replacement back in July.. he was back by mid September boxing people out under the hoop, jumping, running, etc. Oh, what did I leave out? He already had a knee replacement.

To stick with the music world, John Wetton was back recording & touring mere months after undergoing quadruple bypass surgery - and sounding great while doing so.

Smart money says the guy was just done. And that's fine, too.

I have made no comment(s) regarding "Perry's physical condition." I just know that when I see the word "understandably" in the article, the writer, for whatever reason(s), has abandoned all professional objectivity and taken sides (which was probably a prerequisite for even getting the interview). Furthermore, like I said earlier, not having the surgery is what's painful, so the writer comes across as an even bigger idiot! You folks may think this was "interview," but I don't.

Not a slam Boss. We are talking about a legendary college football coach in Pennsylvania, whose name is Joe Paterno. Dude is 83 years old and is tough as a a rhino's hide. Dude runs up and down the field chasing referee's and is just always on fire about everything.

"Boxing out" is a phrase or term used in the game of basketball. I know you can't possibly know what the fuck "boxing out" means.

Dan, I've worked with MANY people who have had joint replacement surgery. Not ONE of them that I've talked to has told me "I just wanted the surgery" - they were all advised - and chose - more conservative treatments prior to getting the surgery. Medications, therapy, steroid injections, etc are used to reduce the effects of the degenerative condition until the pain/disability is such that the surgery is really the only option. It is also very true that people can be living with degenerative joint disease for a very long time before a particular incident makes it apparent. In some people, the very first sign of the condition is a fracture. I have seen people break their femur simply by turning over in bed or moving from a sitting to standing position. When old people break their hips, it's usually believed to be the result of a fall, when in reality the bone breaks first, which CAUSES the fall.

Now, having said all that, I don't know exactly what the deal is with SP, but I choose to believe the hip problem is real. I also think there were other factors, not the least of which is Neal and Jon grabbing onto SP's coattails (hehe) and pressuring him into doing something that he may not have wholeheartedly wanted to do. Just my beliefs though.

Bottom line, SMFP is continuing to be recognized as one of the greats in music history, even after all these years (hehe). :P

 :!:  I'm into a lot of weird shit, but, ...if you insist. I can't wait to see you and meet you for the first time in LA. We'll blow off that concert thingy and go fuck around for a few hours, then meet up with the bored stiffs who sat through Mr Big. I'll tour guide you through Hollywood. The Blumpkin call is yours though.

Interesting to learn that Perry has the letter informing he's out of the band pinned to his studio wall.

They were ready to move forward without him, so I'm not sure how you can even say this. And I can guarantee the material with Chalfant and Rolie would have been better than the boring shit fest they released.

Too bad no one sent one to Neal and Jon after 1987. Ross and Smitty already had theirs. That's when the band broke up (1987). But I'm sure he likes fooling himself into believing otherwise and the little piece of paper pinned to the wall is probably enough to talk himself into it. Where's Freud when you need him.
