Back in the Tall Stories days w/those songs written for his voice, Augeri was great. Sister of Mercy will always be up there on my list of great songs.
I don't think anybody seriously thinks that Steve isn't having/didn't have some serious vocal problems over the last couple of tours at least. The guy was toast and NEEDED some time off to recuperate y'know? Not only for the performance's sake but for his health's sake.
Sure then why didn't he take it? It was always up to him u know. No one could force him to lipsynch. BTW, his voice is GONE, not just recuperating. It's GONE.
I'm just commenting on what I feel is Perry's vibrato....shakiness....warblyness....as opposed to Steve A's smoother, warmer delivery when he was on top of it vocally.
I don't why but this comment really gets my back up. Augeri's smoother warmer delivery on Journey's songs? That's sacreligious to me. I just can't & have never heard that. He always sounded so nasally, so weak, so much like he was straining. Perry's voice is recognizable even hidden in background vocals. It's strong, it's special. It's just unique. Like Elvis, he will have many imitators, some good, some mediocre, but he will never be equalled. Please tell me u downloaded the Patiently example I put up of Perry the other day. I don't think the best opera singers could compete w/that. It's perfection.
Just because I have a different opinion doesn't make me automatically less of a fan or a crappy musician does it?
If u said u liked Augeri's voice & his style, I could perfectly well accept that. But to suggest his delivery is better than Perry's, to me that does call into question ur ability to hear music. My husband prefers Augeri on stage (there's no accounting for taste). He never really liked Perry. But even he says that Perry's voice still gives him goosebumps b/c it's just so remarkable. Perry's voice is one of the greatest voices we will hear in our lifetime. Of that, I'm quite sure.
