Perry never calls him up, when he's alone at night.
What can a poor boy do?

Their love is in a fix.

Steve Perry is not perpetuating anything and the only one spouting bullshit is you. People who have heard him sing recently - like Cyndy and I, Steve Lukather, Nuno Bettencourt & Joe Benson - have stated so but certainly not at the request of SP. So, are you calling us liars? The agenda of you and your pal Tito is quite obvious, typically juvenile and sadly predictable.

The only "people" whose opinions count are the fans. Minus a one-time pit stop to throw out a few hugs, his annual self-absorbed Q&A, and the every so often release of rehashed material (which ironically usually coincides with something Journey is releasing) I'm not so sure he remembers his fans. And I'm so not interested in the testimonials of his PR secretaries, 2 guitarists in has been bands, or some acid drenched, ass kissing, hippy DJ. Are you guys liars? No, just loyal friends and employees. Biased? Yes.

Fuckin Beacon's an awesome boot.

Agreed. I've got all the (known) boots from that year and they're all pretty damn good.

There's one from Pittsburgh that never should have happened. There are places on that show (mainly on the higher-pitched Journey material) that he is pretty rough. That being said, there are a LOT of shows where he sounds just fine. It's not just about high notes.

It still surprises me the amount of Journey material that was featured on the 1994 tour. One would have expected the setlist to be heavily weighted to the Street Talk/FTLOSM songs with enough Journey to keep the audience happy. As it turns out, there was very little Street Talk and a whole bunch of Journey. Go figure...

Steve Perry had/has probably the biggest ego in modern rock history. He loves to perform in front of peeps. If he could do it now, he would. Nuttin more to be said.

I don't know about that ... put him against the likes of Bono and Sting and he seems shy and modest.

The fragile Perry definitely has the thinnest skin of any front man in rock history.

No one knows but Perry and his ENT!

Regardless of whether or not he can sing, the fact remains he hasn't WANTED to sing publically until now, apparently, so I guess that makes the argument a moot point!

I think the Pitts PA show was right around the time that tour got shitcanned... so if it was a bad show, it might have been the health thing. I don't remember 'bad' one (to be fair, I haven't listened all the way throug to most of them...LOL), so I'd have to pull it up and listen. But I know a friend real close to there had tickets to one of the first cancelled shows, so the timing might indicate maybe he was already ill for that one. I don't actually know the date of that one so I could be totally wrong. ??

I'm gonna use Heart's Ann Wilson as an example. I heard one of their classic's on radio yesterday and thought she sounded like a young girl. Well, guess what? She was! I've heard her sing in recent years and she still has a great voice, although sometimes straining on the high notes and often ducking them altogether. So what? She still has a great voice, connects well with the audience and is one of the greatest female voices in rock. So, should I throw her under the bus and say she sucks now and has lost her voice?

If Perry has been working on his voice after not singing for years and he can still pull off a FTLOSM or TBF era vocal, then he is every bit as good as Ann Wilson, who's touring with Journey and Cheap Trick. No singer is going to sound like they did at the height of their career. For you 40 or 50 year olds, go record your own talking voice and compare it to what you sounded like 15 or 20 years ago. No doubt you'll sound the same.

Anybody that gets Perry's talent knows that while he is known for his high end, he's just as well known for technique and delivery. Not many singers are left from his era that ever had that going for them in the first place.

Lukather isn't known for throwing compliments out, so I'm inclined to believe what he says. I don't want to judge a potential new CD from Perry....I want to listen to it and enjoy it! If we see it, it's been a long time comin'.

LOL - that's the truth. By his own admission, he "wears his heart on his sleeve". If he thinks something's great, he says it. If he thinks it sucks, he says it. If he thinks someone did something stupid, he says it.

One of my favorite people to hear interviewed is Steve Lukather ... hilarious (in a crude sense) and no bullshit.

I'm not sure. If the dates are right, it was right after the NYC Beacon show (which sounds great), and the Toronto show (which I have been told is good). It makes sense if the cancellations started soon after this.

To be fair, apart from Only the Young (which I don't think I have heard a good recording on that tour as his voice needed about one song to warm up), the issues didn't really become apparent until he went into the Journey stuff--starting around Dixie Highway. Basically, he could sing fine, but the high range just wasn't there that night, and he was really stretching to pull it off the higher-pitched Journey songs. Who knows what the issue was. Sick? Dry air? Bad breakast? Worried to death wondering how Chalfant would do as the lead singer of Journey? The list is endless...

I think I have a clip of it around here. Let me see if I can find it.

Am I the only "really old" person that remembers Casey Kasem's (sp?) Top Ten show? I clearly remember Casey talking about SP and throat problems that were rumored at the time. Casey seems to have talked to a family member of SP's (granddad?) that said SP was just fine and throat was okay but that the doctor had recommended that SP lower his voice to preserve his voice.

I'm paraphrasing here 'cause I've not seen the show since the 1980's. I haven't looked for or seen a copy of that particular show on YouTube.

I also agree. Lukather has nothing to gain by schmoozing, and strikes me as a guy that says it like it is. I truly believe SP's voice is still there. May not be SP of 1981, but it is still there. he is 60? I am sure his voice changed. look at Sinatra.

Paul McCartney can still sing Helter Skelter at 65 or 64. Amazing. This is not more than two years old.

A few more than 60 shows as a 36 year old...shouldn't have been a problem with proper care. Especially considering he was singing his own songs. Maybe it was the ridiculous idea that anyone wanted to hear fucking Elvis and Motown songs that hurt his voice.

Ya and that early Journey material is some of the easiest stuff to sing huh? You're about that age, lets see you throw down 60 shows in a just few months......oh ya, and sound as good as Perry, please. :P

You didn't like Stand By Me? I disagree with ya there, Perry gives great motown. I agree with ya on Jailhouse Rock though......didn't dig that one either.

I'm all for bowing at the Perry past show alter but they have never went on tour
half as hard as others of their time did or do still.

They were on fire on that ROR tour. They played everything and anything, including that dog of a Schon & Hammer tune, with the Frigameister on KEYTAR, wearing his finest SMOCK. I never saw anybody complaining that those shows weren't first class....wardrobe aside.

Nobody was taking care of themselves in the 80's. It was a time of excess. Just ask Neal! 8) I'm surprised any of them lasted that many shows.

I agree, a lot of them were touring like crazy, especially back in the 80s. And that hardcore touring has fried or damaged a few singers IMO. JBJ is one that doesn't sound as good as he used to either and their early material didn't consist of anywhere near the range Perry had to hit night after night.

That version was so atrocious that Ben E. King's family should consider legal action. That's the fist time you could actually hear that his voice was blown out. He sounded like absolute shit on that song. He was really stretching his voice with those oh so painful "whooooah-ohs." You could literally hear him hurting his voice.

PS I'm 36 and I guarantee you that I could sound just as shitty as I did 10 years ago, but no worse.

Let me tell you something, I've being singing these songs, as well as others, since I was 6 years old and I still got my chops. What's his problem? He's supposed to be the professional singer too. :)
