Fabulous! Thanks. Just slays me that he can deliver vocally like that from behind a drum kit. Guy is definitely multi-talented!

JSS version was ok not owned. I like Augeri version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyJSEz-J1Zk

For me the JSS version from - I think - a Hollywood show in late 2006 was the best one I've heard since the ROR days. But this is just one of those songs that particularly shows up the seismic gap in quality between Perry and all the others.

That'll be great, but it will HAVE to be Deen. Arnel can't touch that song. No way. He'll end up off on the side of the stage, having a coughing attack.
I agree.
Perry's voice had too much rasp for Arnel's still very clear tenor to sing now.

LOL

What's funny about that to ya, Jana? Too much rasp, too much control, too much emotion, to much texture, too much power? Which one? All of those for SP, are things Arnel can't now and can never be able to do 1/10th as well.

Oh, and too much clarity of being able to speak the language and use diction that I can understand.

There's Perry and there's Perry-Lite.

It was a funny comeback by Saint John to your stupid remark about Arnel having a coughing attack on the side of the stage.

I am a huge Perry fan and believe his voice is one of the best voices ever, and my personal favorite singer. I never tire of listening to him. So I don't need a lecture from you putting down Arnel. Arnel is doing a magnificant job. I don't need to put down Perry to elevate Arnel, like you seem to feel the need to do with a few digs regarding Arnel. I never said he was as good as Perry. But Arnel is a fantastic singer and performer and there is a renewed energy with Journey and Neal is still amazing on stage, the whole band is. I'm enjoying it.

Okay. Go back to your bitter self and grab the pom-poms and start chanting, Perry, Perry, Perry. For me, it's not a contest. I'm enjoying Journey with Arnel. Neal Schon is on fire right now. If Perry releases a solo CD, I'll enjoy that too and see him in concert if he tours.

Not lecturing, just stating fact. And you're the one that sounds bitter. I'm being positive about SP's return. I still like Journey but am much less excited about them without their "voice". Arnel is a good youtube/kareoke copy of SP. I'd rather here Jeremey and Froniters.

Well as much of a Perry loon as I am I absolutely love hearing Arnel singing most of the Journey songs but I honestly can not listen to him singing When You Love a Woman and I don't think I could stand Why Can't This Night Go On Forever but we'll see. He just sounds way off on WYLAW and also I thought Turn Down The World Tonight sounded really off live although it is my favorite Revelation song.

It feels so empty without Perry. It's like someone other than Robert Plant singing Stairway To Heaven. As good as Deen does on it, I can't fully appreciate it because it's just too much of a Perry song.

:(
I was thinking the same thing while i was listening to it!

Exactly. Going along with the Robert Plant/Stairway to Heaven analogy, it's a bit like listening to a Pat Boone cover of a Little Richard song. It's fine, if you've never heard the original, or if you like "beige". Something definitely gets lost in the translation. :(

That is a very good point! This is why I think Journey needs to concentrate on after Perry era and move on with Revelation and new material.

To clarify, you do mean Perry in his prime, correct? Whether or not you prefer his vocals is a subjective argument and nothing I intend to discuss, but objectively speaking, Arnel is easily on par with the latter-era Perry regarding technical skills.

Kind of. In Perry's prime(through ROR), it's not even a contest and unfair to even put Arnel in that argument. Arnel is on par with latter-era Perry regarding RANGE, but as far as the control and the use of vibrato on FTLOSM and TBF, Arnel is light years behind. As you said, preference is subjective, and for me, it's not even close. I much prefer Jeremey to Arnel on the entire Journey catalog. As much or more range, and far, far superior phrasing. I'd feel differently about current Journey if he had gotten the job. Just my opinion.

As a singer myself (obviously still learning) I say, that Perry was still very much in front of that department. I really like Arnel, he's an amazing singer. Perry on the other hand, was out of this world and not only a power house voice, but he understood how to work the song, work the mic, emote, perfect timing of vibrato (while not over doing it, on every phrase), just so many things a lot of the great singers today simply do not do, they just don't do it. Technical skills are in Steve Perry's favor, and all you have to do is ask a professional singer, and they will tell you why.

I'm not a singer (I make Prog sound good), I have no idea what technical skills as a singer means. But who would i rather listen too? Later day Perry or current Arnel? Perry by a country mile.

In his prime, Perry was definitely better. Circa TBF? Lol... no. Emotive ability is completely subjective. Phrasing, he has a landslide (but Perry isn't exactly the king of enunciation). Control? Possibly. Power? No. Not even close; Arnel by miles. Range? Again, Arnel by miles. Breath control? Arnel by miles.

Ask the great Bon Jovi.

I prefer Perry's vocals from '83 - '94. Even TBF has moments of vocal brilliance in terms of emotive quality and the harmonies. But technical skills speaks to several key factors:

- Power
- Range
- Control
- Breath control
- Phrasing

And to a lesser extent, versatility and emotive aptitude, but those are more subjective and hard to identify based on one's preference.

Master singing, well that may take a life time. Nobody is perfect, some say it's the flaws in the voice that makes us unique. But, because I practice everyday, study it, go to lessons, spend hours and hours daily, and have been for years, and plan to for many more, well... we'll see what happens :)

Joking aside, I'm sure you'll kick ass. I went through a phase my freshman year, though, where I thought I could sing.

(wrong)

But I am familiar with the material, very well.

Thanks, no doubt because it sounds like you know a lot about it, it does. But yeah it's all good dude. I reckon now would be a great time to start. If there some things I could say to the younger generation right now is, if you like music, you love to sing, then definitely get involved with in some way or another, learn about it. I wish I started earlier, I left it to my early 20's, which is OK too, but I wish I started getting into singing earlier. I can only imagine where I would of been if so... :)

Just to chip in here guys. For some reason people get hung up on the so called "technical ability" of Perry. I guess by being so damned good he made that noose for his own neck, but at the end of the day technical ability isn't a major factor in making great music. I say he made great music through all his voice styles. Whether it was technically great or not, I couldn't tell you.

I'll agree with that. It's just that while he was making great music, he happened to be doing it with unmatched technical ability. Technique isn't NEEDED to make great music, but when it's used correctly as a tool to make the song better, it adds even more to it, IMO.

And it WAS technically great, I can tell you.

Oh, and I can't imagine Still They Ride ever being just a filler song... :?

And WCTNGOF... I hope they don't do it. That song should only be sung by Journey with Steve Perry, IMO. I love Jeremey's version of it, but had he been the singer to replace Jeff, I wouldn't have wanted him to sing it with them either. With Frontiers, I wish he'd sing it every night. 8)
