DSB UK CHARTS

Postby barnsley4 » Sat Jan 16, 2010 7:11 pm

On top of DSB doing brilliant in the UK singles charts a 2 cd compilation was released titled "Don't stop believin" with some different tracks to the standard Greatest Hits which also is being re released next week here in the UK.

Just saw this in the news:

I think they made the best decision on this one. What's really surprising is a short article on DSB and Journey and no mention of SP.

Journey wouldn’t allow Joe McElderry to cover ‘Don’t Stop Believein’
January 16th, 2010 by Lisa McGarry. Tags: Joe McElderry, Journey, Simon Cowell, X Factor

80’s rock band Journey, have revealed that they said no when Simon Cowell asked if Joe McElderry could release a version of ‘Don’t Stop Believin.’

Joe performed the song twice on the X Factor live shows and Journey claim that Simon wanted to release it as Joe’s debut single. Maybe if he had been allowed, Joe wouldn’t have been beat by RATM.

Journey guitarist Neal Schon told The Sun: “We knew about Joe’s song because Simon had contacted our management as he wanted to re-do the song with a different kind of arrangement.

“We listened to it and we declined. We said there was nothing wrong with the original version. If it’s not busted, let’s not fix it.

“My buddy Randy Jackson, who was on American Idol in the US with Simon, was stressing the fact that we should really let him do the new version because it would probably go to No1. But we stuck to our decision and now the song is doing well as it is.”

The song re-entered the British singles chart last December. It is expected to be in the top five this week, after the airing of Glee on E4 which featured a version of the track.

EDIT:
OK, Here's another one showing the classic line-up and I love the part about Journey stands up to Simon. :D

Surely with all the success of the song Journey will come back to the UK this year or maybe this may drag Mr Perry out of retirement (i know wishful thinking )and visit these shores and sing for us Brits that missed him first time around SOOOOOOO MANY YEARS AGO LOL! :D :D :D

If he hadn't wanted to change the arrangement he could have done it without their permission. This is what I was explaining in an earlier post. You are allowed to do covers of anybody as long as you don't mess with the lyrics or the melody. Once you start altering someone else's creation, then you have a problem.

Great, so can we get a new CD without any fucking re-treads this time? I'm not talking just about disc two which was a mandatory item for Wal-Mart, I'm talking about the bonus tracks in Europe and Japan and FITHL. What kind of bonus is that when it's not even new material?

He can't block a cover song being released. I think only if the song is being used in film or as a promotional piece does the songwriter have the ability to block it. If they were going to use the song as an anthem for X-Factor, then he probably has a say in that.

I think The Climb is a better song for a X-Mas release anyway.

Simon Cowell said in the British papers that DSB would be the winner's song if he could 'iron out some legal issues' - so SOMETHING blocked it.

Some Brits have a campaign going to try and stop the X Factor winners song getting to number one in the charts for Christmas!
They are so sick of X Factor's monopoly over the charts in the last four years that over seven hundred thousand people have pledged on an internet site to download a single by Rage Against The Machine this week so it beats X Factor boy to the number one spot.

You were correct Susie. The change of arrangement is what sunk it for Joe and and Simon.

Does this mean that SP has less power over the use of these songs than I thought? I guess even if they had asked Steve he would have needed to get permission from Journey management. Oh well, as long as GH keeps selling like it has been, Steve keeps getting paid well. Frankly, I'm glad Journey said no. You don't fuck with the classics............at least another artist doesn't.

To change the arrangement or lyrics to a song you have to have permission from the original writers. It only takes one of them to say no. Perry, Schon or Cain each get a say if the cover is done. Nowhere does the article say if Perry was allowing the change or not. If Cowell really wanted to get the song out there, he could have the guy do a straight up cover. That would be permissible. Perry, Schon and Cain all have equal say in the songs they wrote. Journey's management was contacted but the song creators were the ones who made the decision.

Watch the video of Joe's version on X-Factor and you can see he really did change the flow of the song which was the big issue.

(Watch Journey go ahead and try to incorporate that arrangement during there next tour  )

The Glee Version has jumped to #4, ahead of Journey's version at #5. Wow. If the X-Factor version had been released, that could have lead to three different versions in the top 10 all at once.

Funny

My 13 year old daughter and her schoolfriends are all over the Glee version and she's gettin major Kudos for having seen Journey live and knowing all about them.

Not a murmer when it was Joe in X Factor, so maybe Glee is doing a better job of rasing awareness for them in the UK.

I watched Glee over the weekend and the DSB moment made me smile...X factor's just made me cring.

Cheers

Well said Mark.

What i don't get is on the noticeboard that people are sick of hearing DSB,i mean c'mon JOURNEY NUMBER 6 in the UK Charts who would have thought it.

You know when i put the local radio stationon here in Barnsley every morning and the DJ plays it (7.15 this morning )and still i get the goosebumps and sing along and playing the good old Air Guitar!

Radio 2 Last week Chris Evans played it.

Heard it Absolute Radio as well.

All it needs now is TV Promotion and i'm sure it would get to NUMBER ONE :D :D :D :D

I'm glad Neal etc said 'NO' to Simon Cowell.

He's ruined pop music for long enough.
I'd have been gutted if he'd been allowed to taint DSB as well.

Good decision Mr Schon.

Being the soul writer, Cain was the only one who needed to sign off on this one. A lot of New York Clubs were playing this a few years back.

I'm glad they stopped X Factor using it. There's an awards show on my telly just now and Joe Mc Elderry just sang DSB. I really do not like what he's done to it.

Haven't done facebook.
Only did a Myspace.
Have had quite a few 'friend' requests from strangers who don't even type a 'hello' with their request, so I haven't really got into Myspace. Although it's useful if people want to hear samples, I guess.

Isn't facebook more intrusive? People bothering you, following you etc?
