Journey wouldn’t allow Joe McElderry to cover ‘Don’t Stop Believein’

80’s rock band Journey, have revealed that they said no when Simon Cowell asked if Joe McElderry could release a version of ‘Don’t Stop Believin.’
Joe performed the song twice on the X Factor live shows and Journey claim that Simon wanted to release it as Joe’s debut single. Maybe if he had been allowed, Joe wouldn’t have been beat by RATM.
Journey guitarist Neal Schon told The Sun: “We knew about Joe’s song because Simon had contacted our management as he wanted to re-do the song with a different kind of arrangement.
“We listened to it and we declined. We said there was nothing wrong with the original version. If it’s not busted, let’s not fix it.
“My buddy Randy Jackson, who was on American Idol in the US with Simon, was stressing the fact that we should really let him do the new version because it would probably go to No1. But we stuck to our decision and now the song is doing well as it is.”
The song re-entered the British singles chart last December. It is expected to be in the top five this week, after the airing of Glee on E4 which featured a version of the track.
EDIT:
OK, Here's another one showing the classic line-up and I love the part about Journey stands up to Simon.![]()

He can't block a cover song being released. I think only if the song is being used in film or as a promotional piece does the songwriter have the ability to block it. If they were going to use the song as an anthem for X-Factor, then he probably has a say in that.
I think The Climb is a better song for a X-Mas release anyway.
Simon Cowell said in the British papers that DSB would be the winner's song if he could 'iron out some legal issues' - so SOMETHING blocked it.
Some Brits have a campaign going to try and stop the X Factor winners song getting to number one in the charts for Christmas!
They are so sick of X Factor's monopoly over the charts in the last four years that over seven hundred thousand people have pledged on an internet site to download a single by Rage Against The Machine this week so it beats X Factor boy to the number one spot.

Does this mean that SP has less power over the use of these songs than I thought? I guess even if they had asked Steve he would have needed to get permission from Journey management. Oh well, as long as GH keeps selling like it has been, Steve keeps getting paid well. Frankly, I'm glad Journey said no. You don't fuck with the classics............at least another artist doesn't.

He's ruined pop music for long enough.
I'd have been gutted if he'd been allowed to taint DSB as well.
Good decision Mr Schon.

You were correct Susie. The change of arrangement is what sunk it for Joe and and Simon.

No, I was just reaffirming that it was you who brought us the news first. By the way, have you created a facebook profile for SmoothDuo? I couldn't find you there.

I'm glad they stopped X Factor using it. There's an awards show on my telly just now and Joe Mc Elderry just sang DSB. I really do not like what he's done to it.
Haven't done facebook.
Only did a Myspace.
Have had quite a few 'friend' requests from strangers who don't even type a 'hello' with their request, so I haven't really got into Myspace. Although it's useful if people want to hear samples, I guess.
Isn't facebook more intrusive? People bothering you, following you etc?

I just restarted my facebook account. There appears to be a lot of settings you can use to keep people away. As a musical act, you can collect fans instead of friends, though I'm not sure how that works.

Oh I see.
Maybe I'm confusing it with Twitter.
Another one I haven't bothered with.
I only opened the Myspace pages for you guys on here, really. So you could hear me.
And any friends who have requested to be a friend but who didn't bother to even say 'hi' or what ever, I've rejected. Anyone who has actually said something to me, I have acknowledged.
Maybe I'm just unsociable?

I don't know much about Myspace, I think Facebook has taken a lot of it's users away.
Screw twitter, that's just stupid shit there, as as I'm concerned.
