Hypathetical situation here.

Has Survivor re-recorded the classics and re-packaged their songs yet, if not - how would you feel if they re-done the whole Jimmy Jamison/Survivor catalog and tried to push it on the general public?

:)

Survivor did re-record Eye Of The Tiger with Jimi Jamison on lead vocals back in about 2000/2001, Dave Bickler was the original lead vocalist of the song. They had intended to release the re-recording on their Reach album, but must have changed their minds because it was never included on the album.

I will always like the original version of EOTT better than the remake, but I'm still happy to listen to the remake from time to time. Everything that I say about Journey re-recording their songs also applies to Survivor redoing theirs. I will always like the originals best, but that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy the remakes either. Now, as I said about Journey, both bands should always make new material their main priority. But if they want to throw in some additional remakes as a bonus, then that's more than fine with me.

You could argue that a new generation will be hearing the remakes first and like them, but WHERE would they hear them in the first place? I doubt they'll get radio play, so a new generation would have to look hard to discover them. Seems like it's just kinda pandering to the new Filipino fans (who are only here for Arnel) which is cool, but unecessary imo.

Though I'd probably be on board if it was a CD of more obscure songs remade. I mean, how many DSBs and Separate Ways do I need, really... The inclusion of WYLAW is so stupid, it's not even outdated. The whole thing just seems unecessary. But I will give it a listen.

People do like what they hear first. That's probably why Journey re-recorded the hits. Think about it...they're gonna tour the U.S., Europe and Asia and a LOT of people will be hearing those songs for the first time (especially in Europe and Asia)...making Arnel their Steve Perry. Obviously, Perry can't/won't sing anymore so I see no reason not to give people that same opportunity to relive concerts memories with an actual recording of what they heard their first time. In other words, it would be retarded to hear Arnel perform those songs for the first time, enjoy them, have memories to associate them with, but have to buy those same songs with Steve Perry singing them. Re-recording the Greatest Hits, after re-thinking it, is a great idea.

Sorry, but I still think it's pointless and kinda disrespectful to previous band members (not just SP). I just don't think THAT many people will hear these without having heard the originals before.

You should see if you can trade in your "Loon Card" for some common sense, but I suspect it's not worth nearly that much.   :P

It's more complicated than that. A lot of the songs from the Reach album were re-recorded with Jamison on vocals after Dave Bickler left the band for the 2nd time....but the Dave recordings were never officially released. They are only available on a bootleg cd of a whole bunch of demos that got circulated around. Which versions are the original?

Survivor is a weird case however. You have two different eras of the band with different vocalists--somewhat like Van Halen. The only difference is with Survivor, they actually could cover each other. Then, to make matters more complicated, parts of (maybe up to half) the Vital Signs album was demoed with Dave Bickler before he left the band--including, likely, the best known song outside of Eye of the Tiger...The Search Is Over. Hypothetically, if Survivor was to release the Bickler-version of Search, they would be actually be releasing the ORIGINAL song, and what people have heard for the past twenty years is the remake. Which version is legit? The original that nobody heard, or the remake that everybody heard.

They actually did this. 38 Special's Rockin Into the Night was originally recorded by Survivor for their debut album, then given to 38 Special at the last minute. For a compilation album a few years ago, Survivor released their original version. Which is the remake now?

Taking this back to Journey, nobody knows if Robert Fleischman did any studio demos with Journey before he was replaced by Perry. That live show that floats around shows him doing several songs that would end up on Infinity.

If Journey released Fleischman demos, then they are the original songs, NOT the Perry versions, despite the Perry versions being more popular. Would you guys have a problem with that?
