That version was so atrocious that Ben E. King's family should consider legal action. That's the fist time you could actually hear that his voice was blown out. He sounded like absolute shit on that song. He was really stretching his voice with those oh so painful "whooooah-ohs." You could literally hear him hurting his voice.

PS I'm 36 and I guarantee you that I could sound just as shitty as I did 10 years ago, but no worse.

Are we listening to the same ROR boot? Granted, sure, I heard him straining on a few in the ROR era too, but I don't recall that one being one of them..........I'll have to listen to SBM again.

Let me tell you something, I've being singing these songs, as well as others, since I was 6 years old and I still got my chops. What's his problem? He's supposed to be the professional singer too. :)

I've known you for the better part of 15 years and the only "chops" I've ever seen in your possession are 3 inch thick pork chops.  :P

I never said I was good. But, I still got my voice. Mind you, I have no training, never practice, or warm up. I hear a good song and I'm ready to go.

Alright boasty ... put your money where your mouth is! Let's hear an MP3 of you doing "Wheel In The Sky", in it's original key ... right now! Don't chince on anything - especially the high vocal around the guitar solo.

:P

I stay out of this Steve Perry's a jerk/screwed the band crap because I wasn't there to see it. However, you wanna start talking about your skills, let's hear 'em! :P

Oh, I have had full scale concerts. Marathons. :D I have sang the entire catalog, every song (Infinity through ROR and even TBF) in one night and was ready for more. If I'm really feeling it, I sing the guitar solos too.

So you mean after all these years you sing like a six year old? Well, I'll be, where is "That's Incredible" when you need it? Remind me to nominate you as the opening act for the remake.

Look mister, those that have never sung at that level have no right to criticize. He's coming out with a new album, damn it. If that means me and the other loons have to sit in the pumpkin patch a little longer, so be it. We're waiting, ever so PATIENTLY.

Bullshit. Then why where the songs on the ROR tour sung as if you were listening a to an old cassette that someone hit "fast forward" on? Why did he choose to tour with guys on the FTLOSM tour that sounded as if their instruments were tuned at Bill's Auto Body? Where was the "perfectionist" in him then?

As for your "no going back" argument...what was there to go back to? Sitting around waiting 10 more years to record another album and then not tour behind it? Neal and Jon must have took all of 20 seconds to make that decision. It would have been a lot shorter had they been able to give an answer through their laughter.

Er, wrong - cos the ROR songs i've heard live sound truly fantastic - the live version of Girl Cant Help It is one of Journey's peak moments. Easily.........in fact it may be THE peak.

That song was played in proper tempo. Most others were not. I agree with you on that one, Gordie. 8)

Maybe they should have done to Perry what they used to do ages ago to keep his voice high.

Unfair. That was Steve Perry the baseball fan. His "voice" should only be judged by actual live evnts where he is there to sing as an artist, not as a fan in a celebration. Your "exhibit" is bullshit.

I would speculate that Perry's voice is not "damaged" in the sense that we're thinking. I believe the only thing keeping him from singing is desire.

I would speculate that Perry's voice IS, however, 59 years old. He spent several years touring and singing in a range that would make most male singers blow a blood vessel.

I believe that, if Journey would tune down even a half-step (Eb instead of E), he could handle a couple nights a week (provided he spent a few months getting back in shape vocally) for a few months.

He wouldn't sing the songs with the vigor of his 1977-self...but no less vigor than his 1994-self...even in the Beacon Theater boot from '94 he was singing very well, albiet not as "soaring"...

I used to think, "He's lost it...his hip was his way out without embarrassing himself"...I don't think that anymore.

Hopefully, this is all a prelude to the eventual reunion tour or one-off show. These guys are getting extremely old as far as performing musicians go, and they'll all soon realize that they've all wronged each other in some way, and that the best remedy for their ill feelings toward one another is to bury the hatchet and go out in a blaze of glory. I think something happens when Perry and Schon share the stage that can't be replicated. They feed off of each other and the result is magical.

Sorry guys, I just don't see this ever happening. It goes beyond money, I think that all parties have come to the resolution that what's done is done, and come to respect each other for the contributions they've made to each other's lives, but I just can't see Perry and Journey ever sharing the stage again.

I suppose it comes down to the question of "If you were paid well enough, would you ever again work with someone you absolutely fucking can't stand?"

Only 4 people can answer that.
I'd bet my 401k I know what one of them would say. He seems to be totally done with it.

I doubt Perry will rediscover a love for touring at 60. Maybe a dozen well spaced shows, max.
