You've really turned into a b-tch lately. :D

While I agree we need to preserve as many rights as possible, some of them just don't make good sense.

They should make a law that states: No person under the age of 18 will be permitted to handle any firearm until said person has passed xyz firearm handling course except in the case of a life or death situation which will be investigated on a case by case basis.

That's very reasonable on its face. The problem is it would probably be as big of a joke as driver's ed and just another drain on government resources. Obviously can't say for sure, but that's how I see it going down.

And you don't let children around weapons full stop! don't even joke about that type of stuff. If you want to be an irresponsible parent, then be prepared for the repercussions. But I am sure every parent here is not an idiot, and with all this heated discussion - I highly doubt, anyone, actually I would bet money on it, that not one person here who is "sane" would let their kids near any form or weapon, being a gun, a sword, a butchers knife, or even a bottle of poison.

Arianddu wrote:And I still prefer Australia's version - yes, you can own a gun: you can have a rifle/shotgun, in your home, provided you have approved security for it (i.e. it's out of sight and locked up at all times except when in actual use) and a relevent licence issued by the police. You can own a pistol, provided it is kept at the gun club and not in a private home, and, again, you have the relevent licence. Is it perfect? No. Are their gun deaths in Australia? Yes. But every gun death in Australia is major news, which gives you an indication of how infrequent they are. But then, Australians also don't see owning a gun as a right, we see it as a choice and a responsibility. We save our 'rights' for things like voting and affordable health care

Well that's exactly right, it is major news, and it rarely happens here in Australia. Also due to the rigmarole of going through all that to own a gun. As Arianddu mentioned - it costs a fair bit of money, and getting that "approved locked safe" that meets standards is not cheap either.

Exactly! :)

On Topic and related - breaking news for Australia

Couple hid in bedroom as intruder shot

A MAN has described how he and his partner cowered in bed fearing for their lives when a man was shot at their Geelong home in Victoria last night.

Ray Dannatt, 52, said he and his partner Sharon barricaded themselves in their bedroom as up to four men tried to break into their house, the Geelong Advertiser reported.

A 35-year-old man was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition after being shot in the head and chest at the address about 10pm (AEST).

Mr Dannatt said the shooting was not related to a bikie gang dispute and instead was an attempted robbery gone wrong.

The father of five said he was lying in bed when the gunshot was fired.

He believed the men were trying to break into the home by smashing the patio window with a rifle before one of them was accidentally shot.

These stories just never end. This fucking moron father should be stripped of his "part-time patrolman" duties, IMMEDIATELY! He is obviously too fucking stupid to protect his own family, so he should NEVER be entrusted to protect the public.

Police Officer's Son, 2, Fatally Shoots Self

POSTED: 10:45 am EST November 14, 2008
UPDATED: 1:21 pm EST November 15, 2008

SMITH TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Police in Smith Township in Stark County said a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot himself to death after finding a loaded gun.

According to police, emergency crews went to a mobile home at the Tecumseh Village Trailer Court on Lake Park Boulevard after a woman called 911 just after 9 a.m.

A neighbor performed CPR on 2-year-old Jacob D. Foor before EMS rushed him to Alliance Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to a police report, the victim's father, Douglas Foor, is a part-time patrolman with the Minerva Police Department.

Police recovered a 9 mm handgun at the scene.

A tentative ruling by the Stark County coroner says the toddler died of a massive chest injury from a gunshot wound.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

This just in about the 8-year-old who shot and killed his dad and his dad's roommate:

"Police reports say the boy had previously told a state Child Protective Services worker that his 1,000th spanking would be his last."

He has been offered a plea agreement that will resolve all charges.

You know... I saw the subject and immediately thought... "Sure, children and guns mix just fine, as long as you have a powerful enough blender!"
