I just think I'm putting it into perspective: he was a truly luminous singer, in the words of Brian May. But I tend to side more with SJ when it comes to the man's personality and the tremendous wrongs that he has inflicted on Journey (firing Ross and Steve Smith, firing Herbie, not touring for TBF, ect.) that most of his fans tend to ignore.

Suffice it to say that I concur that there are a faction of AP fans who like to distort his perception into something bigger than what he is, but there are SP fans who do exactly the same.

And they've been doing it for years.

Well, that line up of Journey does have the sales number in its favor. SP by himself though, not so much.

That's where I differ from SJ. Sales aren't an accurate indicator of talent or quality, though I do not dispute that Steve Perry (in his prime) was the superior vocalist. I mean, after all, if sales are the singular criterion, JSS is a complete and utter joke.

In terms of musicianship, I think Journey has improved dramatically. I think the boys play better than ever. While I recognize that Steve Smith is regarded by most to be a greater drummer than Deen Castronovo, for example, I prefer Castronovo's take on songs. Anyone who listens to the live version of "Chained Reaction" and compares it to Smith's studio version simply cannot deny that Castronovo's drumming is much, much more impressive. Smith's talent was largely subdued in Journey, taking a backseat to Neal and Perry.

Trial By Fire is my favorite Journey album by far.

What?
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

What rule? I didn't think I posted anything inflammatory. The whole point of that specific analogy is to show that sales are only a measure of success, not of talent. JSS isn't a multiplatinum artist, but is no less talented because of it.

Going back to what you were saying earlier about how they sound better now then back in there hayday, the problem is the landscape of musical tastes have changed so dramatically. Even if they do sound great, the market doesn't carry their style of music very well. 500,000 people went out and bought Revelation, 2 million people went out and bought Rock and Roll Train. Both Journey and AC/DC are classic rock artists but only one of them rocked the charts and it wasn't the one that was getting all the publicity on Ellen and CBS.. Something in the new Journey's sound isn't quite clicking or they undoubtedly would have blown AC/DC out of the water. Pineda has raw talent but it hasn't been refined yet. The next album will have songs written specifically for him so we'll see if the old Journey magic is still there.

SP solo wasn't selling like hotcakes but he did outsell Journey after they threw him aside. Street Talk, FTLOSM and the other compilation have sold more than the 3 1/2 shit post SP discs have.

I was talking SP solo against the numbers of Escape and Frontiers. Obviously not even close.
Yeah, Street Talk, a single disc release, went Platinum in only two months from release and was double platinum at last count (as of 1990 anyway). It, by itself, has probably outsold Revelation, Arrival and Generations Combined.

True.

But that's a slanted perspective. The full story is that Street Talk was released during the height of Journey's popularity during the AOR/melodic rock apex, managed by Herbie Herbert, and the charted songs were Journey-esque in sound. If Perry does that again, I'll be impressed. Until then, I'll chalk more than half of that success up to circumstances.
