OT: Santana Releases Duet With Tina Turner

Postby Rick » Tue Jul 24, 2007 5:55 am

I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Carlos his over-rated. He's been laying down the same riffs for 40 years. His protoge is far more talented, although Santana is probably a lot more friendly to his (male) fans.

Oh, I have to respectfully disagree! Carlos is a phenomenal talent. His career has seen him push the boundaries of rock music by infusing Latin beats and rhythms, exloring jazz and fusion, and always playing with an instantly recognizable lyrical tone. He is a singular unique voice! Schon is a great player, yes, but I can't agree that he is far more talented.

As far as this Tina Turner vocal on "Game Of Love", it should definitely be interesting to hear. Michelle Branch did a really good job with the song and, at the time, it seemed perfectly suited to her voice, with its breezy 60s pop sing-a-long vibe. To hear Tina on it will be interesting.

History will show, 50 years from now, that Neal was the more talented and diverse of the two, personality flaws notwithstanding.

Do you really think that Neal Schon will be seen as the larger talent? I am interested to hear your opinion on this. From my perspective, one would argue that Carols Santana fused Latin rhythms and World beats into popular music. His career is very diverse and popularized a new genre of music.

In comparison, Neal Schon's career with Journey has been more one-dimensional, in terms of style and recorded output.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Neal Schon's playing and have all of his albums. I just don't see how he can be the more significant talent between the two.

Absolutely classy response. We should all follow your example!

My contention would be that Neal has forayed into the following "genres" over the course of his career:

Santana - Latin, World
early Journey - Jazz/Fusion and Progressive Rock (at the time)
Perry-led Journey - Classic Rock, Rock
Schon and Hammer - Synth pop/rock
HSAS - Hard Rock
Hardline - Hard Rock/Heavy Metal
Bad English - Pop/Rock
Abraxas Pool - Blues, Latin
solo stuff - across the board
post-Perry Journey - some good stuff interspersed with loads of crap

I think that Carlos will be seen by those who just listen to the music and are not focused on the players as the better talent. That's only because they won't know Neal or if they do it will only be as one player in Carlos' band. Added to that, Carlos' name is on the band, not Neal's, and most people couldn't tell you anyone else who played with him.

I think much of Santana's success has had to with others, Neal, Michele Branch, the guy from Matchbox 20. Heck, Gregg Rolie sang and produced most of the early hits.
