2-week-old baby found alive atop garbage pile

October 1, 2008

A salvager found more than garbage Tuesday morning in Franklin Park -- a 2-week-old baby.

The Hispanic girl was left in a cream-and-green car seat in a pile of garbage in the 3000 block of Lee Street.

She was wearing a white hat, a green jacket, pink pants and white booties, police said.

She also was covered in a light blue blanket and blue adult sweatshirt.

Police said the infant appeared to be in good condition with no apparent signs of injuries.

The baby was turned over to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

First-time child abandonment is a Class 4 felony, punishable by up to three years incarceration and a $25,000 fine.

Police were investigating.

Sounds like she's probably Puerto Rican.

If those were yellow booties and hat, we could say she was Mexican.

When Journey wraps up and Cain stops playing music, I hope he moves back and cleans up the town. I'll volunteer.

Agreed, it's awful. One of our patients was abandoned in a parking lot as a newborn, she was adopted, still have no clue who left her there. I lost a baby too, at 16 weeks pregnant, and can't imagine how people just leave them :( .

A very good friend of mine was abandoned in a shopping mall in California when she was just a few days old. She was found and adopted by a wonderful family and turned out to be an amazing woman. She doesn't even know her real birthday so she celebrates the day she was found in the mall as her birthday-she was probably about 2-5 days old when she was found. However, they don't always turn out that well. I wish this babe well.

Odds are, this kid is better off. It would probably have been another abuse statistic if it stayed with its mother.

How could any woman do this to her child?
There are authorities you can take the baby to, safe keeping. Hell, even go to a hospital or pregnancy crisis center and just ask for help! So, so sad. Babies are too precious. Possibly some younger uneducated teenage girl afraid of her family or something. Doesn't honestly know better... tragedy all ways around. :(

Illinois passed a law that you can drop off newborns at hospitals, police stations or the fire department with no questions asked. But on a pile of fucking garbage?!?! That's just so wrong.

that's true.

no rational person could do a thing like that so there must have been tremendous trama going on in the mother's life for her to do that.

Yep, that's possible. It just amazes me how anyone could leave a newborn, any newborn, even if it's not their own, like that. Newborns are completely helpless. They're also the most fascinating creatures on this planet to me, and that's why they are my career.
