OT - Facebook owns you

Facebook has quietly changed their terms of service. They now will claim rights to any content you upload. Even if you delete your account, they will claim to maintain ownership of anything you put up on their site.

You have been warned.

They should rename that site "Facedown" as in "Ass Up".... I thought that's the way it was with all those internet sites already. That's exactly why I don't put up any pix and personal works of art anywhere on the net, not even photobucket. None of those fuckers can be trusted. When you put it on someone elses server, you done done fucked up little dunn dunn.

Not that it will probably change anything, they have put this up on Facebook now:

Over the past few days, we have received a lot of feedback about the new terms we posted two weeks ago. Because of this response, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised.

This bit gets me:

"Still, the interesting thing about this change in our terms is that it highlights the importance of these issues and their complexity. People want full ownership and control of their information so they can turn off access to it at any time. At the same time, people also want to be able to bring the information others have shared with them—like email addresses, phone numbers, photos and so on—to other services and grant those services access to those people's information. These two positions are at odds with each other. There is no system today that enables me to share my email address with you and then simultaneously lets me control who you share it with and also lets you control what services you share it with."

Er, no, people want to use the applications that are on Facebook, and in order to do so, they have to agree to allow the provider of those applications to have access to their information and the information of their friends. There is a difference. And what isn't made explicitly clear by Facebook is that all those applications are provided to allow outside companies to harvest information of one sort or another; the application is the bait to get you to agree to it.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

I saw that this morning. The more I think about it, the less I need Facebook. I joined in college for use while in college, as it was originally intended. I'm not so cool with what it's developed into these days and don't really see the need to keep with it. Same goes for MySpace. I'm kind of over the whole "social networking" site phase.

I wanna get rid of it but it really is convenient for certain things, particularly my friends that are overseas. They don't use instant messenger, they check their e-mail pretty infrequently, and phone is usually out of the question (hell even when it's in play, we'll figure out a time over the net). So, it's pretty easy to hop on there and send them something they'll look at daily.

That's exactly the reason I can't bring myself to get rid of it. I just wish it were less public like it used to be.

MySpace is so much worse. All that ridiculous bling and bullshit people smack all over their pages got old FAST and I am not about to wait 5 minutes for a page to load and weed through a bunch if glittery Hello Kitties and stupid music that plays whether I want it to or not just to say 'hi' to someone. AT LEAST facebook is devoid of that kind of b.s.

This policy change is not cool, but last I heard they were retracting it (for now).

What I don't like about facebook is how people can see what you're doing and at what time. Uncool. I kind of ignored a text message one day, and later on I got hit with "So, you couldn't respond to my text that I sent at 12:23, but I saw you change your facebook status at 1:12!" Great, so now I have to worry about people checking up on everything I'm doing like I'm 5? How about this... don't stalk me... there's an idea.

They can't see what you're doing if you don't post it. It's completely up to you. Same goes for sites like Twitter. If you don't want people to know what you're doing THEN DON'T POST IT FOR EVERYONE TO SEE!!!

Regardless, Facebook is a great tool for keeping in touch with people, especially those that don't live nearby. I've found several classmates from high school that I never would've gotten back in touch with otherwise.

I put up a few photos every once in a while but I don't put anything there that I don't want people to have access to. It's that simple. People can cry all they want about Facebook's TOS but it still comes down to what they PERSONALLY DECIDE to put on the internet. If you don't like their TOS, then don't use the site.

I think by default, Facebook records and displays your actions. However, I'm fairly certain you can disable this, so that none of your actions are posted (as far as what you did and when)...

Right, I know that. What I meant was that I didn't like was the time stamp thing.
Say you're playing a game or sending someone a gift... it will even post that stuff...

"Kim just completed the drug smuggling by sea in Mob Wars. 9:56am"
"Kim accepted an Aqua Net from Laura using Blasts from the Past. 8:36pm"

So I may not be voluntarily posting what I'm doing, but the applications I'm clicking on are ratting me out anyway. I wonder if you can turn that shit off somehow.

Yes, you can completely control the news feeds and what is published to your profile and the home page. Mine is set to strict settings... mostly because of one "friend" I'm trying to avoid who seems to pounce on every move I make and won't leave me alone. Ugh, she's out of work, bored, and gets mad when I ignore her incessant calls and texts she asks for my other friends' numbers (who she doesn't know) to ask a favor of them. And she wonders why I'm avoiding her. Ugh... maybe if you hadn't left me to my own when I got alcohol poisoning and black-out sick at the party YOU hosted at your hotel the night that you did whatever that got you fired, maybe I'd want to hang out. Until then quit commenting on my status updates asking why "NO ONE SEES ME ANYMORE". Um, wrong it's just you.

Guess I'm anti-facebook/MySpace today.

Yes, haven't you noticed how none of that random bullshit is ever on my page? Plus you can delete individual stories from your wall.

I have one of those stalkers too (as you well know). I'm going to look in those settings... I just never thought to bother before, I guess... But I don't feel like being called a bad friend for ignoring one stupid text after facebook rats me out for robbing banks and smuggling drugs in my Mob game. Can't I just play my game for two minutes without people going "I see you! Are you ignoring me?!"

I don't have the time for it, and some people seem to be using the Facebooks & MySpaces as more of a stalkerazzi utility and it's disgusting. It wasn't always like that. And the new chat feature that shows when you're online, so they wait for you and bombard you with messages as soon as you log on? No thanks.

Well, you saw what mine posted after my "status" update last week? I don't have the time for it, and some people seem to be using the Facebooks & MySpaces as more of a stalkerazzi utility and it's disgusting.

It's VERY disgusting. Mine does that to everyone. She goes as far as befriending people that either are, or WERE connected to me, people she doesn't even know, just to look at their pages and be nosy. She once used facebook to shove something VERY hurtful in my face by leaving a comment for someone else knowing it would show on my feed. This is why she's at arms length... come to think of it, I should have deleted her ass after that.

This is why I got over myspace so fast... the whole drama of "This person deleted me.... this person posted something I don't like.... that person doesn't have me in their top 4000 friends.... wah!"

BTW, all these stupid people are reaping what they sow if they put stupid shit on there. Dumb dudes taking pictures hammered drunk funneling beers, girls taking pictures half-naked or even more disgusting, sitting there pissing on the toilet etc etc. The raciest pics I have on there are me holding a glass of beer and not (visibly) drunk.
