Steve Perry - Jon Bon Jovi

Say what you will about Steve Perry stepping away from the spotlight and not recording any new music, but after watching Bon Jovi's performance on Sunday evenings AMA's (and witnessing Jon Bon Jovi's absolutely HORRIBLE vocals), I appreciate the fact that SP would rather retire while he was on top (and his vocals were strong) instead of continuing to tour and milk his fans of $$$ like Bon Jovi continues to do.

And just to clarify (before everyone gets all worked up). In no way do I consider JBJ in the same league as SP. While I've definitely enjoyed some of Bon Jovi's music, I've never considered JBJ a good vocalist. Adequate at best.

Bad vocals on last nights AMA's by BJ:
Chorus of their new song (1:58 - 2:11 mark)
All vocals during It's My Life

I enjoyed their performance last night of a melody of their songs.

Didn't Bon Jovi just sellout The New Meadowlands Stadium, not to mention a fortnight of shows at the O2 in London? if there is a demand there from the public, why should ther Band retire? The fans seem to understand that Jon's voice isn't what it used to be but for them it's the memories and reliving the past most likely, while for the new fans, he sounds just as good as most of the new artist vocal wise.
If Bon jovi couldn't pack them in anymore, I might agree but next to U2, AC-DC and Bruce Springsteen, they are the biggest old school rock out there. When the fans have had enough, that's when the band should hang it up.

Jon has never been that great of a singer, and surely isn't even the best singer in his own band. Richie Sambora can sing circles around him.

His vocals have always been a bit spotty, even dating back to their early days but he really hit a stride lon the New Jersey, Keep The Faith and These Days tours. I think Jon was at his best, vocally, during the latter tour.

That said, there are a lot of "miles" on his voice, after singing and touring for close to 25 years now. He is obviously nowhere near the class of Steve Perry in terms of vocal ability. But on the other hand, Jon has lapped Perry in terms of career longevity and has surely performed many more concerts.

Jon has definitely changed the way he sings and while he is starting to struggle with certain songs in the set he is still able to get the job done for the most part. He's also tamed a bit as a frontman, but the guy is approaching 50. It's hard to believe that they are one of the biggest rock bands in the world still in 2010, in terms of touring and global reach. They are set to have the No. 1-selling tour in the world this year, which would be their second such crown in three years.

By the way, the AMAs were a complete and utter abomination. KeSha, Katy Perry, Bieber, Rihanna, et. al --- what a bunch of tupperware, Auto-Tuned, sensationalized nonsense.

While I haven't cared for his nasally vocals of most of this decade, he did sound very strong at the show I saw a few years ago....I believe too strong to have been live....Sambora has always been the beter singer in my opinon though I'm not sure about him as of late (Tim beat me to the Sambora comment).

I'm not a Kid Rock fan, but I loved his ballad. Great performance from beginning to end.

Taylor Swift surprised me. Her piano ballad was, actully, really nice -- for her.

Katy Perry was horrific. I was embarrassed for her in the beginning part, especially.

I very much agree w/this post ...Jon has never let me down in concert, but you're right
Richie Rich is fantastic ...love them as a whole, love them individually!! I missed the AMA's, perhaps it was bad, but he was
still sounding great this past April ~live... or with whatever they use!!

On top?!?! Then he should have retired after the Frontiers tour. What followed were 2 sissified Journey albums and one of the single biggest shit heaps ever recorded. He cut ROR short, cut FTLOSM short and completely bailed on TBF. Way to go out "on top!"

PS And then there's the Bill Graham show. Guzzle guzzle.

BJ is a shadow of themselves, at least Jon's vocals, likely due to age, and the vocal issues he had in earlier years. I'd still take them live anyday over most of the other hack artists who's autotuned vocals are blended into a computer generated loop, and wa-la they have an album. At least they are playing their own instruments.

Thank you!! Carley's Dad should be ashamed ...if BJ'S fans thought they
were being milked, they would stop attending shows!! Someone must be effing havin' a good time!!

I'm no great fan of these milk the cow boys anymore....it's long been the JBJ Band, not Bon Jovi.....but nothing too wrong with this. THANK GOD a rock band is playing LIVE and performing live vocals on prime time TV. Weaker vocals and less high notes, but live...and I have to respect that.

Yeah...on top, considering what Neil has done. Perry is first class all the way.

Niel playing tapes and holding fraud concerts on its fans.
And lets not forget handing out a "free" shit product at the gate on their "Generations" tour. Adding the price of said feces into the cost of ticket prices to listen to fraud shows! What a class act that Neil is huh?

I thought Bon Jovi was great last night. Really liked Kid Rock last night. His song and way of singing reminded me of John Mellencamp.

I was a big Bon Jovi fan until they sold their souls to Satan when they did that country album and I HATE country more than any other musical genre in history.

This post is absurd. Go see Bon Jovi live before you suggest they've jumped the shark. Jon had the same self-doubts and frustrations about the road and the business in the 90's, but instead of squandering the gift he was given, he re-evaluated himself and his band, reinvented their image, and carried on - to the delight of his fans. Bon Jovi is one of the few throwbacks to the supergroup era, and they give it every thing they have live.

The only thing I was doing was refuting the ridiculous notion that Perry "went out on top." The Tapegate transgressions were fully acknowledged and this fan didn't hold back in letting his feelings known. Perry fans would have glossed over it somehow ... like everything else. They have never dined in the Reality Diner. But they sure as well have hit every other diner.

for the average fan....he DID retire when he was on top. The average fan could care less that ROR tour was cut short, and FTLOSM and TBF are a small footnote at best. Unless you are a diehard, you have never even heard of the Bill Graham show, much less heard it.

To the average fan (which GREATLY outnumbers any other group), Perry retired after ROR when Journey was big. That is going out on top. The truth is a bit more complicated, but the popular perception is what it is based on.

Well I loved every minute of the show I saw in July....Jon was spot on.

I agree 100%. His vocals were far from "horrible"...he struggled with the higher notes on the older material, but so does every other singer his age (48 ). I think he sounded very good overall...
