Neal's New Solo Albums with Smitty and Jon Hammer!

Postby RocknRoll » Sun Apr 03, 2011 8:15 am

David Kalmusky posted on his website that he was spending the month of March working on Neal's 2 new CD's I know I saw pictures of Neal working with Steve Smith on one of his new solo's coming out, but it looks like he's also been working with Jan Hammer. I'm really looking forward to these 2 and hope they get released this year, since it sounds like they are pretty much done. Maybe Neal will actually do something with his website and put some clips out there.

I know someone posted about this earlier, but I just hadn't seen the part about Jan Hammer.

Neal spearheaded the direction for ECLIPSE -- which so far sounds like it's going to be awesome.

BOTH of Neal's solo efforts sound like they're going to kick major ass in very different ways.

It's official:

Neal is my fricken' hero. 8)

I know. That's why I said they'll kick ass in very DIFFERENT ways. Although if memory serves, Smitty plays drums on two tracks of the Deen/Mendozza album. Neal called him in to drum on the progressive rock tracks. I suspect that's how the second album started -- Neal remembering/liking the chemistry between himself and Smith on the two tracks and decided to do a whole album just between themselves. Possible those two tracks were ported over to the Smitty album. Time will tell.

Exciting year for Neal-centric music. Can't wait for the releases.

Thanks...I was just excited to see Jan Hammer was going to be on at least one of these solo albums...Untold Passion and Here to Stay are still 2 of my favorite albums! Of course, Marco and Deen, will be awesome as well! :D Neal sure needs some help with that website, one update in what 3 years???

I know that Deen is the drummer on one of the discs and that Steve Smith is the drummer on the other one.

Any of you know any details about the albums?

Is Hammer playing on the same album as Smith?

What style of music is supposed to be played on that album? Is it just one style, or a mix of styles?

Is the album that Deen is playing on going to be Metal?

Yeah. IMO 2005 was the best year for a fan of Neal's, with the release of 3 great guitar albums in Soul Sirkus' "World Play" Journey's "Generations" and Neal's "i on u" album.

I think that 2011 could be just as great for fans of Neal, with Journey's "Eclipse," and if Neal gets the two new solo albums out this year too?

Neal said he was looking to do a "power trio" between himself, Deen and Mendoza, so based on that, I have to believe Hammer is playing the Steve Smith album.

I also believe that Smitty's record is a progressive rock thing, because I read somewhere that Smitty got involved on the power trio album for two of the tracks that had a "progressive rock" sound. From that I'm inferring those sessions spawned a separate project which is now the Neal/Smitty record. Could be those two tracks have been ported over to the Smitty album.

Deen and Mendoza will be singing on their album with Neal. Don't know if Smitty's album will be all instrumental ala Eye on U or if there will be vocals. If there are vocals, I'd like to think Deen or Mendoza will be handling that.

Should have dumped Mendoza in favor of Michael Anthony.

Have any of you ever heard Mendoza sing lead vocals?

If so, what's his voice like? Is he a good singer? Does he sound similar to any other singer/s that you can think of?

I shouldn't be responding to this, I know I'm starting something I don't want to be involved in, lol... but I can't help myself. I'm in one of those moods tonight.

So that said, I highly disagree. You're entitled to your opinion, but IMO, I don't think Anthony has a 10th of Mendoza's creativity. He's solid, but very very basic. No imagination. Deen has the same problem as a drummer (IMO). One trick pony (pounding). Pretty sure that's why Neal called in Smitty for the progressive tracks originally. Wasn't sounding right with Deen.

Illustrated example:
Go listen to the tail end of Friend's to Lovers on Soul Sirkus. Listen for Mendoza's bass riff on that section and then find me anything by Anthony that comes close to that kind of creative thinking. Hell, listen to his playing on the whole song. Doubt you can find something comparable by Anthony. Add to that Mendoza can REALLY sing well. Anthony hits high notes, and does a good job on backups, but Mendoza can sing lead if he wanted to. Saw him on Neal's solo tour. He sang lead on their cover of a Stevie Wonder song. Sounded better on that one track than their lead did on anything else the whole night.

Mendoza is a monster on base, I don't know where SJ is coming from on that one! I've never thought of Anthony as a stand out base player, just a good one. SJ, were you thinking about Anthony over Mendoza because of vocals or something other than base playing?

I was blown away by Mendoza on Soul Sirkus.

Marco is the best bass player I've heard/seen in person. Very versitle, can cover anything from hard rock to jazz.

I certainly agree. I love Marco!!! Maybe SJ is saying Michael Anthony is the bigger name, but Marco is hands down a better bassist and I like his singing!!

Oh, I wouldn't like him to stop being busy with the musical out put and learn how to be a webmaster. I figured he'd just hire that done! Maybe quit giving that job to girl friends and family of girlfriends, if that's what he does.
