Kurt Cobain made the list but no Yngwie, no Schon, no Ace Frehley (who isn't a virtuoso, but influenced many on the list).

Lindsey Buckingham barely cracks the list at #100.

Rolling Stone makes for nice toilet paper.

It's certainly a subjective list, but it also looks like they consulted a lot of musicians for the list and didn't just make it up. I'm not a musician, but always suspected that Schon probably wasn't as highly regarded outside of Journey fan circles. Hell, I'm sure Justin Bieber fan forums think he's the greatest singer to ever live!

There certainly are a lot of negroes on the list who I've never heard of.

Bullshit Edwardo. Rolling Stone IS a good magazine. It is hated by Journey fans because it doesn't glorify Neal Schon and Jon Friga. Journey is NOT respected amongst it's peers. You peers point of view to me is much more important than say Steveo77's or babyblues. i would much rather lean on Jackson Browne's opinion of guitar players, than Andrew McNeices, no offense Mac.

Also, when RS runs lists, they are of course subjective in nature, and some lists are made by voter call in(fans), and then some are made by musical peers. Steve Perry always seems to make the lists, even though he was in Journey. What that says to me is, yes, the music is cheesy as all hell, but that guy is that good a singer we can't leave him off the list. As for Schon, you all really think he is the best out there? That's laughable. Sure he's good, but maybe it's time you all learned that there are other bands out there besides Journey.

Perry was #76 or so on Rolling Stone's singers list, where guys like Bob Dylan were in the top 10. That's not exactly a study in accuracy.

That's weird, right?

Dylan is great, and technically he is a "singer", but if we are talking voice, vocal ability, not song writing and other things not directly related to singing, then it does seem odd to include him on a list of best singers.

Not so fast. Steve Perry isa just a special vocalist. However, there are guys like Bryan Adams who may not have the voice of an Arnel Pineda, but sure as shit is a better singer than he is. Bob Dylan doesn't suck like all you think. You all seem to think a singer must have a tenor voice. That's why Bruce Springsteen is always voted a top 3 live singer. he is superb singing his material. He sure as hell can't sing perry songs but so what? and who can? LOL, the sooner you all accept the fact that it's not the voice but the singer, the better.
Another example is JSS and Pineda. JSS may not have the "voice" Pineda has but is three times the singer. Is this so hard to understand?

Rolling Stone is a shit magazine, and has been for quite a while now. Kurt Kobain in the top 100!!?? Are you f'ing kidding me!! WTF How can you take that seriously when they put him on that list. If guys like Yngwie, Neal, Ace Frehley and others are omitted, but you put on Kurt Kobain for top 100 guitarist???? And singers... Bob Dylan??? Give me a dam break, poet, songwriter, musician...I could see him on a top 100 list for any of those, but singer! LMFAO The guy has always sounded like Buckwheat from the little rascals, even before he had the accident. What a joke Rolling Stone Magazine is. What a waste of a magazine and it has nothing to do with JOurney, it's just Rolling Stone sucks ass.

These lists are always open for debate, but it all depends
on how you want to rate these artists, whether we're talking about
guitarists, singers, drummers, etc.

I think a list like this is less about how well someone can "shred" or manipulate a fretboard,
and a lot more about innovation and complete songwriting ability. Kurt Cobain comes up a lot,
and a lot of people always question why he is on a list like this. But look at Kurt's body
of work, how he literally helped change the landscape of the music scene through his songwriting
ability and "edgy" and "simplistic" guitar style, and maybe you can understand why he is in there.
Don't agree with the list but I see why it reads like it does.

Same goes for singers. If you want to judge purely on all the technical apsects of singing,
guys like Dylan, Neil Young, Springsteen, and Vedder never make a list like this.
But again, look at the craft as a whole, realize "singers" like this are also some of our
generation's greatest "storytellers and songwriters", and then maybe you can understand
why they might be regarded so highly.

All great points, and I don't disagree with most of your sentiment. That said, I'm completely on the same page with everyone here who has weighed in on Dylan. The first time I ever heard that dude sing, I thought to myself "How the fuck did anyone ever give that guy a recording contract"? The fucking Chipmunks sing better than he does! Dude's job description is to sing and he can't sing to save his life!

No it's not. Rolling Stone is largely regarded as a pile of hoitey toitey shit these days and is repected by few...if anyone. They make dumb as controvesial lists to try and garner what little publicity they can.

No one in their right mind takes Rolling Stone seriously - Schon or no Schon.

Yes he does. He is an influential songwriter and headed the hippy-led singer/songwriter genre for a decade in the 60s, but fuck me...that was 40 year ago. The old todger has never been a "singer". Deano, you need to get a grip...or perhaps loosen your grip???

RS is dog shit. They lost me when they glorified the likes of Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello and The Clash.

It's not so much they like these screeching chalkboards, it's how they pompously bash the many bands that can play their instruments, sing a melody and maybe throw in a harmony or two.

I think Dr. Hook singing about them went to their head. Fuck off Rolling Stone. I haven't paid for a subscription or issue since 1979.

You didn't say this when he let you finish his crumbs a few years ago. Sounds like bitterness to me more than anything.

Kurt Cobain was a garbage guitar player.

Deano I usually agree with a lot that you say, but Dylan as a singer sucks big time. As a song writer he's one of the best all time and I give him credit for that, as a vocalist though I'd rather here him release music and listen to another band cover his songs. :D

Absolutely. 100% garbageshitecrapolashitastic.

I'm agreeing with Andrew on this one. Songwriter? Sure, I'll give him his due credit. As far as singing goes, Dylan is Subject #1 in that being able to sing is not the criteria one should use for being a lead singer.

Like I said, Dylan not a great singer, or even a good singer. Great songwriter and musician, NOT a singer. As a singer... he sucks. Kurt Cobain NOT a great or good guitar player, songwriter, influential music? YES. ...but does not belong on a top 100 guitar players list. Neither does Springsteen (belong on a top 100 guitar players list), more proof that Rolling Stone is just a joke of a magazine.

When was the last time anything written in Rolling Stone mattered to anyone other than a still-stoned, sad, graying Boomer clinging desperately to the fantasy that "their" music was so fantastic that it changed the world forever? Please.

Rolling Stone magazine is like the weird hippie aunt you feel obligated to invite to Thanksgiving Dinner even though you know she will insist on perching atop some chair, pulling up her tie-dyed peasant skirt, and exposing herself to everyone in the room... no more, no less...

In the country music genre, I would have to think Keith Urban is in the very top of a country music guitarist list. He plays all strings, electric, acoustic, bass, banjo.

Great solo at the end of this live performance this year. Very much a rock solo:

Actually, he is...For one example, he has guest-starred in Joe Satriani's G3 concerts on several occasions including, if I remember correctly, the first G3 concert Satriani and Vai ever did. He also got rave reviews from other guitarists involved in Dio's "We Are Stars" project.

True that. That explains soooooo much when it comes to our debates. Dean, if you think Dylan is a good singer, then we are planets apart in our vocal tastes. Like Springsteen, he is definitely a great songwriter, but I seriously can barely make it through a whole song of Bob Dylan's singing.

That list is more of a 100 'most popular' guitarists..............I definitely wouldn't call it 100 'top' guitarists. There is lots of extremely talented guitarists MIA on that list. :?
