Lindsey Buckingham barely cracks the list at #100.
Rolling Stone makes for nice toilet paper.

Perry was #76 or so on Rolling Stone's singers list, where guys like Bob Dylan were in the top 10. That's not exactly a study in accuracy.

I think a list like this is less about how well someone can "shred" or manipulate a fretboard,
and a lot more about innovation and complete songwriting ability. Kurt Cobain comes up a lot,
and a lot of people always question why he is on a list like this. But look at Kurt's body
of work, how he literally helped change the landscape of the music scene through his songwriting
ability and "edgy" and "simplistic" guitar style, and maybe you can understand why he is in there.
Don't agree with the list but I see why it reads like it does.
Same goes for singers. If you want to judge purely on all the technical apsects of singing,
guys like Dylan, Neil Young, Springsteen, and Vedder never make a list like this.
But again, look at the craft as a whole, realize "singers" like this are also some of our
generation's greatest "storytellers and songwriters", and then maybe you can understand
why they might be regarded so highly.

Bullshit Edwardo. Rolling Stone IS a good magazine.

Bullshit Edwardo. Rolling Stone IS a good magazine. It is hated by Journey fans because it doesn't glorify Neal Schon and Jon Friga. Journey is NOT respected amongst it's peers. You peers point of view to me is much more important than say Steveo77's or babyblues. i would much rather lean on Jackson Browne's opinion of guitar players, than Andrew McNeices, no offense Mac.
Also, when RS runs lists, they are of course subjective in nature, and some lists are made by voter call in(fans), and then some are made by musical peers. Steve Perry always seems to make the lists, even though he was in Journey. What that says to me is, yes, the music is cheesy as all hell, but that guy is that good a singer we can't leave him off the list. As for Schon, you all really think he is the best out there? That's laughable. Sure he's good, but maybe it's time you all learned that there are other bands out there besides Journey.

Not so fast. Steve Perry isa just a special vocalist. However, there are guys like Bryan Adams who may not have the voice of an Arnel Pineda, but sure as shit is a better singer than he is. Bob Dylan doesn't suck like all you think. You all seem to think a singer must have a tenor voice. That's why Bruce Springsteen is always voted a top 3 live singer. he is superb singing his material. He sure as hell can't sing perry songs but so what? and who can? LOL, the sooner you all accept the fact that it's not the voice but the singer, the better.
Another example is JSS and Pineda. JSS may not have the "voice" Pineda has but is three times the singer. Is this so hard to understand?

You didn't say this when he let you finish his crumbs a few years ago. Sounds like bitterness to me more than anything.
Kurt Cobain was a garbage guitar player.

Yes he does. He is an influential songwriter and headed the hippy-led singer/songwriter genre for a decade in the 60s, but fuck me...that was 40 year ago. The old todger has never been a "singer". Deano, you need to get a grip...or perhaps loosen your grip???
Enigma869 wrote:It's certainly a subjective list, but it also looks like they consulted a lot of musicians for the list and didn't just make it up. I'm not a musician, but always suspected that Schon probably wasn't as highly regarded outside of Journey fan circles.
