I've had the wonderful pleasure of spending 2 full days recently with Steve in the studio while producing my artist Vic Heart.
Steve absolutely loved Vic and called him one of the very best voices he's ever heard (which is a true fact)...but he also helped us arrange some backing vocals and i was singing harmonies with him in the control room on loud volume...his voice is AMAZING!!!!!

Don't believe all the bull shit being spread about huge artists like this...they are 99% false all the time.
Steve's problems with health has been normal but painful stuff with a muscle in his neck and i think something with his back or hip...how could you even perform or wanna sing when you're in pain all the time???

He told me he is feeling really good now which is all the matters.
He is an artist so of course he has written and recorded a lot of songs over the years but he said that he has no idea if he ever wants to release any of it.

I'm not allowed to use it at this point but i hope someday he says OK to me showing some VERY funny videos i shot in the studio
He is a VERY funny guy...the hang we had with him, Vinnie Colaiuta, George Hawkins jr, Niko Bolas etc in Capitol was waaaaaaaay too much fun

The obvious answer is that one cannot ascertain intent through text, since there isn't inflection or tone to communicate such things, hence the use of emoticons. But I guess 'intent', 'inflection', and 'tone' are things that can't be explained, right?

The point of my comment was that it's in the ear of the beholder. If Tommy considers what Perry did on David Pack's song amazing, then that's what he means by amazing -- but other might not agree.

I actually think some of his deepest most powerful and heartfelt deliveries are found on a combination of FTLOSM and ROR. If he managed to bring FTLOSM quality vocals to a recording session, I think I'd find myself repeatedly chanting "there is a God, there is a God, there is a God". That said, I think these days he has to gear his new material to the voice he has today, not try to create the next version of faithfully. If the material he's laid down in recent years is in say, the Jeff Golub vein, I think it would fit perfectly and I'd be thrilled to have it.

What made Perry a standout wasn't just his technical skill set. It was what he did with it. It was his art. It was his style. It was his delivery -- and -- it was unique. If he can bring his art style and delivery with lesser voice, I'd still be a happy fan.

I'm paraphrasing, but Andrew has said that it reportedly hurts/is problematic/is difficult for Perry to sing for extended periods (i.e. full concerts). Doesn't mean he can't lay down studio tracks, take a break, come back to it (should he be so inclined). And if that's his modus operandi, I have no problem with it. I don't have to see the guy live. I want (new) music that I (want) to hear repeatedly in my headphones.

Well, I guess you have to count Tommy Denander, Steve Lukather, and Russ Miller (you know, the guy who has reported he played drums on an album titled "Steve Perry: Still Here" which is found on his website) in that grouping too then.

Denander has pretty much let us know the issue is Perry doesn't want to release the material. He's probably not happy with it. Doesn't mean it's bad, it means it's not living up to his personal standards. Time will tell if that changes. The ball is in Perry's court. Always will be.

But, what exactly does he mean by physically challenging for Steve Perry to sing? Is it a vocal chord injury? Is it some other condition that keeps him from being "active" with his music? Or, is it just too challenging for him to try and replicate his 1980's voice? I don't believe there is a soul on these forums who thinks that Steve Perry could sing like the Steve Perry of 1981. I, for one, wouldn't expect him to come anywhere close to that. But, if he could sing like he did on "I Stand Alone", I'd take that!
