WYLAW better than ARNEL.....

General Intelligent Discussion & One Thread About That Buttknuckle

Don, you left a very intelligent response here and it deserves a reply. I was in Journey/Arnels corner at first. Even though I was a fan of Augeri and JSS, I thought Neal Schon knows more than I do about his band. So I heard all the concerts, interviews, CD's, etc. I really believed patience was in order on the diction thing. Well, its no better and then the Super Bowl thing where he looked like he was going into a drug induced frenzy left me speechless, especially when everyone in the room at my Super Bowl party looked at me and said "what the hell is this...this is Journey?????" I was ashamed of what the band has become and embarassed for being such a total Journey fanatic when the rest of my friends are into Avenge Sevenfold, Linkin Park, Lynrd Skynrd or even country acts like Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson or Hank Williams Jr. I felt like the village idiot. Patience left me then and hasnt given me any reason to return. I wanted Journey to be great with Arnel (there, better?) Augeri, or JSS. Even Hugo, Jeremey, or Chalfant. I just wanted the Journey to go on as I knew it. But reality is they are not a great band with Arnel, not even on the level of Foreigner, Styx or REO.
And maybe another part of me is pissed at the JSS thing, or Augeri being thrown under the bus, or that they cannot seem to do anything to entice Steve Perry into a reunion and it finally grew a head.

Matt, before you accuse me of pissing on the asian bandwagon maybe you should know one of my best friends, JimRuss is from Thailand and I love him like a brother. Hes my oldest daughters godfather. HEs part of my click. Being from Miami I have lots of nationalities represented in my family, spanish, asian, hell even those crazy ass canadians.
I have never dished on someones origin. But mine gets pissed on all the time. Yes, I may be a redneck but I am one damn proud one. So why is that OK?

Yeah, Arnel's inability to curb his accent, even though other artists have done it and his continued riding of the cover band circuit even though he has had time now to break from that and even put out one or two original singles has really pushed me off of the wagon, myself. I see the band content to continue to pretend it's still 1981 and a singer just happy to get a check with no creative fire at all. The lack of preparation for the Superbowl, even though Pineda had to know how much that performance was going to mean to Jon And Neal really tipped the pot as far as my fandom went. I'd say those two guys were more disappointed than all of us fans but they had hitched their wagon to Arnel and have to take the bad with the good. As long as Neal and Jon have licensing rights for most of the catalog, they can live with the amateurism that's going to happen from time time, I guess.

We shall see, with this new album that he cowrote ...there should be some emotion involved, if
the words are meaningful to him ...if they hit home!! It could happen ...don't know
about the accent thing, though ...for those who are bothered by that!!

I understand ya on that one. For example, I loooove this duet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpZ9fWvTR80 I like the gal's voice and tone, sings with plenty of feeling, and compliments his voice, but her lack of pronunciation (sometimes not saying the full word) takes a little away from that for me.

Since 78 wrote:Some good points, part of Arnels lack of feel are also related to the fact that he has no connection to the songs....

Regarding "No connection"

"Turn Down The World Tonight" has PLENTY of connection. He sings the hell out of it. He sings "Only the Young" better live and recorded than Perry did, though he did not write it. Was also brilliant on "What I Needed".

NOBODY is saying Arnel is better (again, show me those posts where people are doing that). Most things, Perry did better. A few things, I'm digging Arnel on more. So what? Takes nothing away from either of them.

My God, the guy's had ONE album of songs that were already written by the time that he got into the band. It's not like he got to put his OWN stamp on any of those writing-wise. The guy came in, sang the crap out of what was there and toured like a mofo and held up and came back for more. He's been extremely cool to Journey fans, though the majority of them have crapped all over him.

So what if he's grown to legendary status in his own country and people? Good for him and good for his people. Is it deserved? That's up to those that see him in that light, not a bunch of disgruntled Perry/Augeri/JSS fans. Let him have his moment.

I just don't get the need to constantly slam the guy at all. He's doing his thing. Journey's other singers are doing theirs. I'd rather have a Pineda Journey than no Journey- AND I give the guy props. I only have been bothered by his accent at the Superbowl thing. The rest of the time, I notice it when he speaks, but not when he sings.

And this other stuff about The South and The West... jeez. I don't dig SG's constant dogging of Pineda, but he's cool. Everybody here for the most part is friendly with each other, yet things can sure get stupid. Deano's a windbag. Everyone knows it. But he's still hilarious and is a cool guy.

Everybody take a deep breath and chill. Maybe if you would all just go put on "Piano with a View" it would mellow you out and put things in their proper perspective...

Good post.....it's all a matter of what you want from the band...for some it's just what they are looking for...for me not so much.
