I would describe their music as a mix between power metal and progressive metal. Think Queensryche with neo-classical influences, because Khan sounds reminiscent of Geoff Tate at times. I haven't heard Eternity, but between Dominion and everything that followed is a world's difference. They grew more subtle and catchy.

My favourites are Karma and Epica but you may like The Black Halo better, because of the duet and the more prominent symphonic arrangements, hence the gothic I heard in it.

I wouldn't say they were particularly progressive at all S-Dip. To these ears they are power/goth.

What do I call prog? Numerous and often ridiculously complex time changes, 10-15 minute epics, solos outta the wazoo on all instruments and so on. I don't think Kamelot fill the bill in those areas.

Hmmm, where's the progressive in Kamelot... they don't do the complex time changes (at least not that I am able to notice) but I think for a power metal band they write original, less straightforward melodies and songs, and their concept albums could be regarded as a very long epic, with the interludes and all. In all they aren't afraid to experiment, which to me makes them progressive, though not exactly Dream Theater material. I guess my definition won't fit everyone... it's just the way I feel when I listen to them... as a power/progressive metal band. I never before tried to put into words why it made me feel that way...

They definitely have progressive elements and fit quite nicely into the prog/power genre. I don't hear much goth in there at all. Jonny, they had a different singer when they released Eternity and Casey Grillo wasn't the drummer then either. They have a totally different sound with the changed band members. They are an awesome band and definitely worth listening too.

Yeah they are definitely worth checking out - no doubt.

Prog? Well one couldn't compare them with Dream Theater at all, and I guess DT are what most people would see as the prototype prog band - on the other hand, they are similar in some ways to Masterplan, which are a band that most people would say are archetypical power metal.

However, in theme, look and subject matter they are somewhat 'darker' than a band like Masterplan.

In a simplistic sense, this is the crux of why I call them 'Power/Goth'.

The female vocalists they use give them a goth feel too, so maybe they're power/prog/goth? Dunno, but they're good.

They are! I really like 'Karma' - didn't like 'Black Halo' so much but I'm prepared to gove 'Ghost Opera' a go.....


My (late) AOTW by the way, is Marillion - 'Afraid of Sunlight'.

AOTW: Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos

Not the DT that blew me away back in the early 90s but still good stuff. I don't care as much for the keyboard sound they have going; but Petrucci just seems to get better as a guitar player and Labrie sings well so they make up for it. I think one of my favorite songs is the fairly mainstream sounding 'Forsaken'

yeah thats kind of the way i see prog too.....and no Kamelot aren't prog. Their live dvd is fucking awesome.

:lol: Oh well, it almost sounds as a classical work, with the strings set in G... :lol:

Mine is Scorpions - Humanity Hour I. I've heard it only twice so far, and still don't like the opening track, but after that it's very okay. Heard some beautiful warm and full sounding undistorted guitars on a couple of songs.

Yeah...not a big fan of cd no.2 so far.....the Sphere of Souls cd is great though (features the original SunCaged singer and keyboardist).

I forgot to post an AOTW last week. But for two weeks, I've been listening to a Nightwish compilation that I created. It's a modification of 'Highest Hopes' which I call 'Shattered Hopes.' It's actually a slight change from the one I posted in the compilations thread.

I've been using it as a deterrent force for anyone who's looking at the apartments next door. Wanna be my neighbor? Better like metal, or you're gonna be miserable. :P

Hmm, yes, it is different. It's still Sonata Arctica, but it seems to be a little darker than their previous stuff and not as cheesy perhaps? Has a lot of keyboards. It's not their best album, but it's very good.
