My GUESS is that coffee and tea could be forbidden for the caffeine? Is that possible? Because I know when I worked in a 7th day adventist run hospital (not mormon) they weren't supposed to drink any caffeine, and they weren't even supposed to use pepper, because both are considered "stimulants".

Caffeine is not forbidden, it is suggested to be used only in moderation but we are counseled to avoid coffee and tea. Pepper? Hmmm, interesting.

Yep, they said it's a stimulant. They didn't use it in their cafeteria, but did put packets out for non-SDA's. They are vegetarians too, so for years, we had no meat in their cafeteria, but that changed a little, of course when I left. Patients of course ALWAYS had a choice of meat on their menu. They aren't the best at meat dishes though!

Matt, you don't have the slightest clue what you're posting about. Athletes at BYU undergo a rigorous introduction on school policies when the are admitted to the school. In Brandon Davies case he grew up in Provo where BYU is located and played his high school ball across the street from the BYU campus. Brandon, more than most athletes that attend the Y, had a very clear understanding of both the rules and the culture. He screwed up, felt guilty, confessed, and will now experience a repentance process. Also consider that this may have not been Brandon's only run-in with the Honor Code and that he may have already been on a short leash. He hasn't been kicked out of school and will most likely be allowed back on the team next year. Brandon has handled himself admirably through this process and he will be a better man for it.

I personally feel that the administration of the Honor Code at BYU could use some adjustment. With that said the Honor Code helps create a very unique college environment that is not only appreciated by its LDS students but many non-LDS students who choose to attend. I never felt my college experience was lacking and consider my time there to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Because after all having rules to govern behavior within religious parameters is a bad thing. BYU produces very productive members of society and most who have a clue would place said alumni in the plus column of life. Sounds like a system that works for a lot of people.

I just think in the great scheme of life, making someone not drink coffee and tea is an empty endeavor. besides the obvious controlling aspect of the rule, and the discipline aspect on the side of the obeying party - there is no logical reason why anyone would tell someone not to drink those two beverages....NONE.

I was sent to Catholic school from K-12 (well I chose the HS for sports), but that was more than enough me. I used to be an easter/christmas catholic, but I'm not even that anymore. I honestly can't remember the last time I went to church even out of just accommodating my family on holidays. No one in my immediate family really kept up with the practice of Catholicism. Frankly, a lot of that was because of how shitty the Catholics were to us when we paid them to go to school.

I am overall a pretty damn conservative/traditional person and I do live my life with a lot of restraint and a lot of what I like to think is pretty solid moral behavior. I'm just not gonna countenance nutty stuff that tells you no tea or coffee or that consenting adults cannot have sex even in the context of a relationship.

Just to be clear, I think it's just as goofy that Catholics don't eat meat during lent, so I double my meat intake during lent. I also think kosher rules are goofy as fuck.
