Caffeine is not forbidden, it is suggested to be used only in moderation but we are counseled to avoid coffee and tea. Pepper? Hmmm, interesting.

Yep, they said it's a stimulant. They didn't use it in their cafeteria, but did put packets out for non-SDA's. They are vegetarians too, so for years, we had no meat in their cafeteria, but that changed a little, of course when I left. Patients of course ALWAYS had a choice of meat on their menu. They aren't the best at meat dishes though!

110% spot on, Dan. We're in different zones politically, but we're on the same page philosophically.

Any religion which claims to have deep-seeded core values, but was founded by a fanatical bigoted polygamist racist, is unto itself its own perpetual joke.

I'm a BYU alumn, former athlete, and closely related to one of the people on the previously posted list of famous Mormons.

Matt, you don't have the slightest clue what you're posting about. Athletes at BYU undergo a rigorous introduction on school policies when the are admitted to the school. In Brandon Davies case he grew up in Provo where BYU is located and played his high school ball across the street from the BYU campus. Brandon, more than most athletes that attend the Y, had a very clear understanding of both the rules and the culture. He screwed up, felt guilty, confessed, and will now experience a repentance process. Also consider that this may have not been Brandon's only run-in with the Honor Code and that he may have already been on a short leash. He hasn't been kicked out of school and will most likely be allowed back on the team next year. Brandon has handled himself admirably through this process and he will be a better man for it.

I personally feel that the administration of the Honor Code at BYU could use some adjustment. With that said the Honor Code helps create a very unique college environment that is not only appreciated by its LDS students but many non-LDS students who choose to attend. I never felt my college experience was lacking and consider my time there to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

From a Mormon follower. Just illustrates how insane these people are:

"People will often point out that it's caffeine or tell you what is wrong with coffee; but that's not the real reason.

We believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, he received a revelation called the word of wisdom telling us to abstain from certain things, among them coffee.

It's in obedience to a spiritual law that we abstain much like modern Jews who still live the law of Kosher yet can't understand what's wrong with having a bacon cheeseburger.

So caffeine is an excuse we often place on it but the real reason is that God told us not to."

   How embarrassing for anyone associated in this bullshit cult. God has a few words this Joe Smith asshole, and the best this clown could up with is that God told him not to drink fucking coffee? Joe Smith: "Folks, I talked to God today!" Moron ... I mean Mormon follower: "You did?!? What did he say?!?!" Joe Smith: "Can't have coffee or tea!" I can see why drugs and alcohol are forbidden. This guy was obviously on them.

Would it surprise you that I've never had coffee once in my life....and I'm not a mormon?

Btw, it has nothing to do with tolerance....all religions are cults. It's a fact. Haven't you been following the new season of 90210?

Because after all having rules to govern behavior within religious parameters is a bad thing. BYU produces very productive members of society and most who have a clue would place said alumni in the plus column of life. Sounds like a system that works for a lot of people.

Tell me, what code do you live by that makes you so much more enlightened than LDS folks? Keep in mind that in spite of the LDS religions peculiarities most of its teachings are well within the judeo-christian ethic.

I just think in the great scheme of life, making someone not drink coffee and tea is an empty endeavor. besides the obvious controlling aspect of the rule, and the discipline aspect on the side of the obeying party - there is no logical reason why anyone would tell someone not to drink those two beverages....NONE.

I know you weren't talking to me, but theCODE I live by is making decisions for myself, within reason...No one wants to go to jail. So those 'rules' I adhere to....other than that, people can go get bent. I don't follow any 'rules' that are meant to control me....

Some would say that that rule is no different from ANY system where in order to accomplish 'A', you have to do 'B', or NOT do 'C'...like in order to get your medical liscense you hae to pass the MCAT. To draw the similarity, in order to attend BYU you have to not drink coffee - TWO entirely different dynamics happening there.... just don't see it.

I was sent to Catholic school from K-12 (well I chose the HS for sports), but that was more than enough me. I used to be an easter/christmas catholic, but I'm not even that anymore. I honestly can't remember the last time I went to church even out of just accommodating my family on holidays. No one in my immediate family really kept up with the practice of Catholicism. Frankly, a lot of that was because of how shitty the Catholics were to us when we paid them to go to school.

I am overall a pretty damn conservative/traditional person and I do live my life with a lot of restraint and a lot of what I like to think is pretty solid moral behavior. I'm just not gonna countenance nutty stuff that tells you no tea or coffee or that consenting adults cannot have sex even in the context of a relationship.

Just to be clear, I think it's just as goofy that Catholics don't eat meat during lent, so I double my meat intake during lent. I also think kosher rules are goofy as fuck. I'm an equal opportunity discriminator, and I'll knock any goofy ass religious practices, whether it's the goofy stinky diaperheads, the arrogant Catholics, the tightwad Jews, or the polygamist Mormons

You didn't choose shit. You were told something illogical ... and listened. And that makes you assholes. This is were religion should stop and common sense should take precedence. And where one should have the capability to see there is nothing virtuous or rewarding about abstaining from coffee and tea. But people soft in the dome can't think for themselves and simply don't have the confidence to alter the rules and attempt to make their religion a bit more practical and unique. I mean, seriously, do you really believe God told this asshole not to drink tea and coffee?!? Or is it possible, or even more accurately, highly probable, that this didn't happen at all? No coffee and tea. What about hot chocolate?

It's unfortunate, but I actually agree with you on this. I try VERY hard to not be judgemental but I do see many examples of people in my religion that are judgemental and that's a shame.

Dan, this is the biggest, illogical, non-sensical, backwards, lame thing going on....I agree. When all these disasters are brought up, or if it is brought up how god can allow mass murders, or pedophelia, or any other horrid act that god chooses to turn a blind eye at - the defense from the devout is always -He gave us free will....so I ask you....If god gave us free will.....why can't we drink coffee? or tea, or Hawaiian Punch? It is either or - people....it can't be both.
