I'm not a rock writer or music scholar, just a music lover, so this is a fan review but being a big music fan I wanted to take the time to recommend this album as I think it warrants recommending.
If anyone is looking for that classic melodic rock sound that is timeless along with a freshness for today, you will find it in this album. Shawn Pelata, Nikki Dimage and Thomas Clark have obviously, upon listening, studied the formula for making a good melodic rock album and got it right.
Shawn and Nikki's vocals compliment each other and the harmonizing throughout is fantastic. I think Shawn stands on his own vocally but if I would compare I would say that there is a cross of similarity of his voice between the voices of Steve Augeri and Rik Emmett. Shawn also hits a few notes into the stratosphere in a couple songs that would make Steve Perry sit up and notice.
I was going to go song by song and write what I thought of every song but this album is one that blends well from song to song and pulls you in to listen to it as a whole. With that said I will mention some of the stand outs, starting with the opening song, "It Takes Time", a rocker with well written positive lyrics that has that classic sound and one of those stratospheric notes at the end. "Obsession" is another rocker with a classic rock sound, and one that grows in appreciation for, with each subsequent listen. "I'll Be The One Tonight" opens with a Peleta high note and continues with those great harmonies between he and Nikki. This one definitely has a classic 80's sound and this is the one where Shawn's vocals are the most similar to Augeri's. "The Fire Never Dies" is another standout rocker. "In The Stone" is an instant classic for today with an original sounding guitar solo within a guitar solo. "I'm Crying For You" is a great ballad with a nice piano intro and " Ghost In Your Heart" is the stand out ballad on the album lyrically, musically and vocally. The other songs I haven't mentioned are good as well, with the weakest being "Give Me All" but even that tune is still a good solid rock song.
As I've mentioned, this is a cohesive compilation of songs that one will want to listen to in it's entirety. This album will definitely give you that melodic rock fix you've been looking for. An 80's classic vibe fresh for today. This is as top notch an album, written, performed, recorded and packaged as you'll find with any of your favorite melodic rock artists offerings, including the most well known. If you like Journey, Styx, Foreigner, as many of you here do, you will like this. This is one of the few new melodic rock albums that I've heard in recent years that I will be keeping in rotation to revisit often.
