Multiple Vocals and Negative Reviews

Postby RoyalOakRoadie » Sat Jul 30, 2005 12:28 pm

Maybe you all can help me out here. I just don't get all the negative criticism about the multiple vocalists on Generations. Yes, it's done a little differently than Journey did it in the past, but are people forgetting about the Greg Rollie era alltogether, or just looking for something else to snark on?

Just curious..

Some people feel it takes away from Steve's role.
Some people feel it is to hide Steve's flaws.
Some poeple think it is a way to get Steve out of the band.

And most people think that Journey is only 'allowed' to make songs and/or music that resembles Escape/Frontiers/ROR. They cannot deviate from that pattern in any way or they are doing a disservice to the legacy of the band.....

So, Journey fans are not only divided into PerryOnly vs. AugeriRocks camps, but pre- and post- Jon Cain camps as well?
Should I get out a score card here so I can keep up? lol

I've said it before, I'll say it again...the ONLY band I can think of with no lineup changes is U2...if I stopped listening to any band that has had a lineup change, I guess I would only be listening to U2 eh?

Remember when William Shatner said on SNL "It's a tv show, get a life!" Well ...'nuff said.

The people who HAVE to HAVE Perry, and that ANYONE else just won't work.

You know it really is simple, which makes their futile arguments and agendas even more ascinine.

The guy is gone, wants to be gone, is a fucking crybaby, a liar, and frankly can't sing in a group of this caliber anylonger, and yet his "people" are fighting for "something" on his behalf..I just don't get it.

Perry would be downright embarrassed if he saw this..

No, it's a legitimate :?: Roadie. It's just that OA went at deano with a bait that he may or may not take now.
Plenty of people are syched at the different vox and getting into it. I am.
Also, tons of people who love the format have criticized a thing or 2 about it like Gone Crazy. I think that song could've gone south fast but is saved and improved by Schon and Castronovo pulling out command blues rock performances. I also thin it's a one-shot deal with future records (if they come, Deano) having maybe Deen fronting 1 track and cain another or an augeri-cain duet like perry-rollie. Neal and Rosswere 1 shot deals as fun for them and a treat for us. :)

Agreed Red13, personally I would have preferred it if they would have done at least one song with the "trade off" vocals ala Rollie/Perry. The Valory and Schon tracks are my least faves on the disc, but I like Cain's voice though..

*keeps my fingers crossed for more in the future, and a "trade off" vocal song!* ;-)

I'm not baiting Deen, I just questioned him. If he chooses to come at me in one of his profanity-laced tirades it only shows his immaturity.

Stop, already. You did it and you know it. The fact that you mentioned the possibility of a tirade exposed your hopes.
Dude, what do you think of the multi vox? Huh? Huh?

Roadie, I gotta say I love In Self Defense. There's a message in there from the band, too.

Roadie, I have to tell you I love both Self Defense and Gone Crazy, yes they are a little different, but in comparison to the entire history of the band and what they have already covered in their incredible catalog of songs, neither of these songs seem out of place on this, or any other Journey cd. But then again, thats IMHO...

Actually Deano, I totally agree with you. Perry has made it more than clear than not only is he not interested in working and/or performing with Journey any longer. But he is not interested in being part of the industry AT ALL. He's very happy living the quiet life away from all the craziness of being a celebrity. He said it in his own words on the BTM Directors Cut, at the WOF and the interviews he did just there after. I wish he would work again as a solo artist, I'd buy it, but I respect the fact he no longer wishes to do anything, except maybe a guest spot like he did with David Pack.

I'm sure he is baffled by all this 'undying' loyalty that he should still be the singer for Journey, when he's made it quite clear he doesn't want any part of it any longer.

What I love about Journey is the experimenting, if you will, that Journey does, and the fact they don't try to fit somebody else's mold.

Perry has made it more than clear than not only is he not interested in working and/or performing with Journey any longer. But he is not interested in being part of the industry AT ALL.

It likely bugs the crap out of him, since he wants nothing to do with the notoriety of it all. On the other hand, he keeps the fires burning with comments like "I think about touring every day" and "I'm getting a little moved to do something."

Even when Rollie was in the band, Journey did NOT have FIVE different lead vocalists on ONE album. It is over kill, to say the least. Journey is, or was, supposed to be about each member doing what they do best. Neal and Ross are best with their respective instruments, NOT their vocals. Obviously, Deen has proven himself as a great singer, so give him a song or two. Jonthan has proven he can fill in the duet role...he even did a bit of it on ROR...so let him do that. But, FIVE lead vocal performances is not what Journey is about, and should not BE what Journey is about. Let Augeri do the job he was hired for, let Deen do the vocals he has proven he can do, and let Jonathan have a vocal role simular to Gregg's....and let the other concentrate on what they do best - PLAYING THEIR INSTRUMENTS. That is one of the stated reasons for hiring Perry way back when - so that they can concentrate on playing and let someone else handle the vocals. Changing that old idea was not needed and DESERVES all of the critique from fans.

They can change the style of music without taking a mediocre vocalist and giving him a song to sing on an album....when MUCH stronger singers are in the band.

I think they were just trying something different.

I'd like to see them go back to the Infinity/Evolution/Departure format; Where either Cain or Schon or both do duets w/ Augeri. Like they did with "People & Places", "Feeling That Way", etc.

I would like to see Deen get a song or two on his own though; with Augeri on rhythm guitar.

There's great strength in diversity!

Heart's been doing this lately. A. Wilson is primarily the voice; but is now picking up a guitar or bass from time to time; giving N. Wilson more vox time. Their Lovemongers album actually had a third singer for one track.

To me, it makes for a richer, more complex sound.
“How did that sound?”
