Journey's Greatest Hits!

Back up in the top ten. Damn, those guys were good. I believe that this is what Neal stated once when he said that he was watching some boots. :D

Maybe folks have already heard Perry with Pack and want to hear more of that magic voice.

You mean that faintly discernible sound in the background that sounds like an old man wheezing?

How many singers out there today have HALF the voice as that "old man wheezing."

Hi HOTS. It is amazing isn't it. This was a band whose music was discredited in it's time for being formulaic and corporate, and yet their music is still selling over 25 yrs later.

They arranged some of the most talented musicians into one group, crafted undying works of art, and played to every person they could.

I really, honestly don't understand your thinking on that Dave. Why would they be buying the 80's stuff if they're impressed with the band as it is now? Why aren't they buying the new stuff? If I hear a band that I like I go out and get the latest of their work. Then, if I'm really hooked, I go look for the old stuff.

I think it's incredible that GH is selling so well. I think it's a testament to several things: Perry's unrivaled vocal prowess, which helped propel the band to cosmic success, Neal's lyrical guitar playing, which perfectly matched Perry's soaring singing style, the creative chemistry among the band members, which enabled them to craft the musical gems that are on the compilation, and the fact that the band are currently touring (which always seems to give a jolt to record sales).

Hi Soledad. I don't think we've met before, but if we have and I've forgotten please forgive me. Can you give me an answer to the question that I posed to Dave? Why are people buying the old music rather than the new? If the majority of the people who attend the concerts are old fans, which seems to be the case, then I can understand their buying the old hits because that's the music they love, but that has nothing to do with the current band. I would think, however, that most of them would already own the GH. If they are newer fans, why wouldn't they want the newer releases? It just doesn't make sense to me.

OhSherrie, it is simple:

1) the audience doesn't have to buy the new material because it is being given to them. And I do believe some of the people who did not get the CD at the show will buy it when released because the new music did go over well.
2) many people at the shows are young (to my pleasant surprise) and they probably do not own their own copy of GH. Add to that the people who have re-kindled their love of the band and it's music due to the show, that might have gotten rid of their GH, or had it on tape (or even *gasp* vinyl) and they want it on CD.

These kinds of tours are always increasing the sales of artists back-catalogs.

Duh.
Because the old stuff had Steve Perry on it!
People only want the Steve Perry years!
Without Steve Perry the band is nothing but a bunch of talentless sidemen!
It's simply not Journey without Perry steering the ship!
Isn't that obvious?

-There.

-Ya happy now?

Doesn't matter if I believe it, or if it's even necessarily true, u won't be contented until someone, anyone, says it, so i just prematurely nipped it in the bud and got it over with.

With that done, feel free to take ur partisan agenda with you and now go home.

Well, no NC, I was HONESTLY looking for the rationale that's behind the idea that the current band is selling GH. Does your answer mean that there isn't a legitimate basis for that belief?

It's a good question, Sherrie. I know the band Poison (certainly not in the same qualitative league as Journey, but if I may use them as a frame of reference nonetheless) likewise found success on tour and their GH compilation sold well, their subsequent new material did not. I don't know what to attribute the recent sales spike to, except for the usual culprits (classic rock radio, the enduring appeal of those songs. etc).

Journey is now embarked on a 30th anniversary tour. Journey has a greatest hits album. They're playing many of the songs on that greatest hits album on this tour. Hence, the catologue is shifting a lot of units. As a rule, and Journey's Greatest Hits is no exception, Greatest Hits albums outsell individual albums. It's simple, really but you heads know that, doncha? You just think it pains Journey fans to say it. It doesn't. Nor does it mean Arrival, Red13 and the olther albums' pace hasn't picked up, it's just that as usal they haven't picked up to the tune of a Gr Hts album.

People are buying the Greatest Hits for several reasons, mostly because Journey is everywhere right now...

• "Don't Stop Believin'" on Family Guy

• "Open Arms" on South Park

• "Don't Stop Believin'" on Cold Case earlier this spring

• Journey on MTV's Laguna Beach last week

• In other words, Journey's been licensing a lot of stuff lately

• Including vintage T shirts which are all over the place, and about the coolest shirts to have right now out of all the 80s band t shirts. Blame that guy Elmo.

• Journey is at the forefront of the wave of 80's nostalgia right now. It is cool and hip to like Journey again. Not 2005 Journey, but 1983 Journey. Just ask Lindsey Lohan.

• Its summer time. People associate Journey with summer time

• Frontiers has been playing a lot of gigs lately. At least 3 or 4 people buy a Greatest Hits CD the day after attending one of our shows. That's got to count for something, right? (tongue in cheek people, don't have a stroke)

• Journey seems to be getting a lot more radio play lately. I don't know why but until the past 6 months, I didn't hear a whole lot of Journey outside of "Open Arms" on AC radio. Now our Clear Channel classic rock station is playing the hell out of LOTS of Journey.

• Many college kids have discovered that if you lick Ross Valory's face in the liner notes of the "Greatest Hits" CD you can get a quick buzz.

That's 100% the absolute truth, as honest and mature as you'll find.

The next DVD should fly off the shelf. 15 pages of reviews that I read on the first DVD were awesome.
