 Great post Jeremy.

I read those review HOTS and they are the definitive answer.

I'm not sure I agree with you Dave, but I appreciate your opinion.

Couldn't it be that the people just like the old stuff better? I'm not trying to argue mind you, I'm just offering an alternative theory.

Well you are assuming they have heard the new stuff. The concerts are peoples only exposure to the new material. Hearing a song once is not always enough to leave a lasting impression.

In regards to why people seem to always flock to the Greatest Hits, well, besides being a collection of GREAT songs, it's also "safer".
Think of it this way; when people go into a restaraunt they have a tendency to order something tried and true. Right?
It's the same way with music somewhat.
I have a friend who loves "Higher Place", has me play it for him all the time. However, when he goes into a music store would he ever buy an album from the "new Journey".
Nope.
From old "safe" Journey?
Sure and he does so frequently.

The classic songs are classics, they are on the radio all the time (and TV etc) and so they are ingrained in the collective conciousness of the mainsteam public. There is a sense of "safeness" and "comfort" in sticking to what you know and what you know to already enjoy. Why venture outside those perimeters of safety and comfort to try something untested and therefore possibly unsatisfying?

You make some really great points NC but wouldn't you think that the Journey name and the history of music that brings people to their concerts would give them some confidence in the new music?

Yes, Sherrie, I do. Hey, look, nobody said current Journey isn't selling ANYTHING they just aren't selling anywhere near the numbers they did in their 80's heyday.

But the old Classic Journey songs were new at one time, right NC? People couldn't wait to get a new Classic Journey album.

There's myriad of variables to consider as to why Journey of 'today' doesn't sell nearly as well as the Journey of 'yesteryear'.
Let's try to keep this conversation realistic.

The first DVD was the Journey 2001 DVD. That included two "new" songs.
Steve Perry was nowhere ON the DVD but obviously the songs he was a part of were.

Except you were citing a recent upswing in sales. Yes, consumers prefer the "hits' because they remind them of their youth. I truly believe the recent upswing has a lot to do with the tour. However, Jeremy made some very good points. So, which comes first? Are all the Journey 'appearances' based on the hype of the HWOF, tour and new CD? Or is all the hype based on the appearances?

I think Journey has much more confidence in their new material NOW then they did with Arrival. Or maybe they simply learned from that situation. For the Arrival tour they simply slipped in the new materil. They had a rather short set, slipped in new material without intro-ing it, and left some glaring holes in their setlist. The audience came out of it confused by 'that song they didn't recognize' and the omission of a hit they knew well like Open Arms.

This year, Journey is playing pretty much every familiar tune they have, many tunes that people are not familiar with, AND they are intro-ing the unfamiliar. So at least the audience understands where the band is coming from. That goes a LONG way to easing the audience when there is something unfamiliar being played. Add to that the fact that the audience can put in the new CD and hear that new material (clearer than in concert most likely) and they feel like they 'witnessed' something.

The simple fact that Journey is making sure people are aware of the new material, and able to hear all of it, exemplifies confidence to me.

Do you have anything worthwhile to contribute or are you going to devolve this thread into rancorous tendentious bickering as usual?

Your topic is about the recent acension of the GH cd on the pop sales charts.
If I'm not mistaken, that has nothing to do with dvd reviews.

THIS topic was on the spike in sales for the GH cd.
Do you even bother to pretend to make sense anymore?

Of course it does.
I forgot that Perryloons live in a reality all their own.
Facts have no bearing on you.
How silly of me.

Aside from that, NC, did you enjoy the reviews? I'll excuse your being silly and forgetful of your misguided thoughts.

I think the reviews are appropriate to the subject. I mean most people probably bought the DVD for the same reason that they bought the CD. They love the music and the band that made it.
