Hey all-

To those of you know...

Was there a huge difference in Tall Stories and Tyketto? Mamos and Red13GrandpaJoe sent me a Tall Stories cd, and it is pretty solid..very Faith in the Heartlandish..minus the guitar of Schon.

I tried to thieve Tyketto on Limewire, but nothing found.

Can someone shed some light on this for me.

Tall Stories is the better of the two. Tyketto suffers IMO, from poor production.-ERIC

I did not care for the Tyketto disc as much. A little harder, a little bluesier but didn't quite pull it off. A couple of songs are really good but overall, as mentioned, production is weak and the vocals sound rougher/ more raw. Seemed to push Steve a little more.

But, then again, I haven't listened to Shine in a LONG time. This is from my limited memory (I am getting so old!);)

You're right about the production and I think Steve's voice is rough as there had been I think 4 years between the Tall Stories album and Shine. Maybe he hadn't sang regularly for a while prior to recording Shine and didn't have time to get his voice into shape. However, I love the bluesy feel of these songs and his vocal style on this album.

I did not listen to the clips. I am always interested in new music and I have heard a lot about Shy. I just haven't gotten around to them yet. I will give them a shot if you give me the link again...

OK, listening right now. The clips are not very long so it is hard to get a good read. And they really seem randomly picked out of the song, so they do not truly represent the song. Also, my work computer speakers are HORRID. That being said:

I never thought I would say this, but I think his voice is a little too high. I love high vocal styles, which is why I like Perry, DDY, The Outfield, the guy from Starship (brain fart, I KNOW this guy's name!!). Tony reminds me of Kevin Chalfant on the first Two Fires CD, but higher. Similar quality though. I find myself liking the slower songs a little more, they seem to be sung a little lower. I like the guitar work, the music...but I am not sold on Tony's vocals. I will have to listen again at home, with real speakers.

Now I know a little more about who Tony M on the noticeboard is!

I can give you my assessment on Shy if you don't mind me buttin' in!

I love their sound and have the Unfinished Business album. There are no fillers on that album as far as I am concerned! I want to get their latest album. From the little I have heard, the "Sunset" album sounds just as good as Unfinished Business!

By all means Greggie, butt in. I welcome the opinions. I am sure I will find some of their music. I like the style and enjoy supporting bands that play it. Maybe I will start with Unfinished Business, based on your glowing recommendation.

And speaking of Starship, I got a cd of theirs from 2002 where the band as it is now rerecorded their greatest hits in the studio in 2002.

Wonder how they pulled that off but JRNY could never do such a thing. I think it'd be cool to hear that.
And before I get come down upon like a ton of bricks, I KNOW about the urban legend of Perry's control over everything the band does.

But Andrew just posted, I think in the noticeboard, that it's HIS understading that Perry's say so only covers the catologue with HIM singing, nothing the band does now. He'd get PAID if they did it, but couldn't put a stop to rerecording.

I am sure it depends on what kind of agreements they signed upon leaving. But Starship has changed it's name several times, saving some of the legal issues. And the band has been bastardized with lineup changes more than Journey, or most other bands. Then it also depends on who wrote what. So many factors.

Except if it includes re-recording the music he co-wrote and sang on.
Now, my understanding is that Journey can re-record their Perry-era hits for a live CD with only having to agree on royalties. But I am not sure how that pertains to studio versions. Perry, if I recall, DOES have say in how Journey represents themselves insofar as it pertains to him. If Journey is promoting itself using Pery's image, name, anything, then he has something to say about it.

I was quite pleased when they recruited Steve as I knew his vocal abilities having already got Tall Stories. BUT I was not impressed by Shine at all. I'd take Tall Stories any day.

I did however see Steve sing live with Tyketto and was very impressed. An amazing voice that was very versatile, doing the VAughn songs as well as his own, and he did put his own stamp on the early Tyketto stuff and it sounded great.

On the Shy topic. NIG have you got Access All Areas? Great CD.

That's what I liked about Unfinished Business...Storyline is a good ballad! Breakaway is a cool song, I just don't like the intro when Mills does the "Whooaaaa oooohhhhh"......the song, IMO, would be perfect if that was left out!
