Journey NJ PNC 8/26/05 Review

Postby Gaffguitars » Sat Aug 27, 2005 3:09 pm

Just got back from the three hour Evening With Journey. And I have nothing bad to report. They sounded great. The first set was right up my alley. They did 5 songs from the first pre-Perry albums. They opened with the intro to People And Places and broke into Kohoutek. They continued on with Of A Lifetime, I'm Gonna Leave You, Nickel & Dime and Mystery Mountain. I NEVER thought I'd get a chance to hear those songs and if I ever meet Neal I'm going to thank him. Most people were sitting waiting patiently for the hits. It took a lot of balls for the guys to do what they wanted to do. They rounded out the first set with Just The Same Way, Feeling That Way, Anytime, Gone Crazy and In Self Defense. They ended set one with Anyway you want it, everybody was suddenly standing. 11 songs til Augeri gets one by himself, pretty cool. The only complaint would be that it's too bad Gregg Rolie wasn't there to sing those songs. Cain did a commendable job though.
Set two blasted off with Be Good To Yourself. They played most of their hits and when they did the crowd went nuts. Especially during Separate Ways. Escape was great too. They did 4 more songs form Generations (total of six) and they sounded great. Heartland, Place In Your Heart, Every Generation, and Out Of Harms Way which cooked. But many in the crowd didn't know the songs so they sat down waiting for another Greatest Hits song. They did Higher Place and sounded great. It got a real good reception from the crowd, which it didn't get four years ago. I guess it's a classic song now. Maybe when some people reach a certain age they only like songs when they become a few years old. Augeri sounded really good. I still don't think he sounds ANYTHING like Steve Perry but Deen on the other hand... He sang Where Were You and Still They Ride. He was incredible. He's closer to Perry than Augeri is. Who knew??? He also played his ass off as did everyone else. And Neal is still the best. He was his usual awesome self. Just kicked my ass.
If you're a big fan of Journey music and all their history then this show is a must see. Great show.

:?: Looks like they dropped Patiently from the first set, but they added several more songs. I didn't hear Still They Ride, Where Were You or Higher Place at the Kingston, RI show. Generations songs played were Faith In The Heartland, Every Generation, In Self Defense and Out Of Harms's Way. I will be attending the Hollywood, FL show on September 18th, so we'll see what suprises are in store for that show. I wish they'd play something from Trial By Fire...Can't Tame The Lion or the NEVER before performed LIVE excellent song from RED 13..Walking Away From The Edge! Wishful thinking, right? OH...and drop fucking Open Arms and ADD Butterfly(she flies alone)! right..ah...ha :D

I love the set list change ups.
Gone Crazy, In Self Defense, Place in Your Heart, Still They Ride.....now if only they keep it this way when I see them on the 3rd.
Thanks for the review.

This sounds like the perfect setlist to me! 5 pre-Perry songs, 6 "Generations" tunes, Higher Place!! AWESOME!! I must say that Journey makes you WANT to travel to see more shows! I rememebr a quote from Neal that mentioned Journey started out like Grateful Dead on steroids. Now I see it!

So now it's Deen who sounds like Perry?

Gee, Perry just needs to clone himself since he's being copied so much!

Don't be tricked by her false indignation over the words "fuck you", Deano. I was here back when Andrew first shut this board down. The last post ever written on this board was the words "Fuck You" made by PF to Tornado Jackson.
I saved the whole thread and still have it on my hard drive.

All I am saying is that the Perry spirit lives on through Augeri and Deen. They are channeling the ghost of Perry past.

Everyone else sees it - why can't you?

No need to get so bent out of shape.

Who sees it? Some reviewers? Some people who are lukewarm fans? The Heads and Loons?

Face it HOTS, Journey is kicking ass without your boy. And that Fucker really pissed me off in the NY Times article, when he said, "people are coming up to me, telling me they loved the music. They really loved Journey." Past tense..Ahem...He Perry, the band is going on fine without you..Give it a rest, you big pussy.

See, you really are a dumbshit. The NY Times wasn't talking about Journey. You don't know anything, PF. You truly are a stupid assed troll. The article was about Perry going to college instead of Tommy Lee...and also DSB being played in Monster and on I tunes....Journey was never brought up.

Again, I wish you would just go straight to Hell....you make a complete fool of yourself, and add misery to this board. I won't respond again to this thread because you get off seeing how many posts and replies you can get....I bet you get all wet reading this don't you..I know for a fact you aren't getting any of the real stuff..who the Hell would go out with you?

Yes, in the NYT article, "love" is in past tense...because if it were said in present tense, it wouldn't be true!

What's there to love, really, other than a Journey copy band that wishes it were still on top of the arena rock mountain?

But they slid down that mountain when they hired a Perry Xerox. They could have taken a cue from Perry and just quit while they were ahead. Then they could have gone their separate ways and pursued other musical projects.

But instead they prefer to pretend they still "have it" by performing concerts that heavily rely on archived material and give only a subtle nod to their present incarnation. They coast on past glories, yet feign relevance by churning out tepid new tunes.

But most people see through this charade - except for a handful of die-hards, who are in deep denial that the Journey has ended.

Really? 12-14,000 showed up in Saratoga last night.

What's there to love, really, other than a Journey copy band that wishes it were still on top of the arena rock mountain?

Who is on top? I know of hardly any others in that time period doing as good or better than Journey now. I know Steve Perry isn't close to Journey's success.

But they slid down that mountain when they hired a Perry Xerox.

They did? Hmm..Selling out yet again on this tour...I don't understand this lame comment HOTS. Augeri isn't a xerox....he is better than Perry now.

They could have taken a cue from Perry and just quit while they were ahead.

Thank God they don't listen to him! Journey, as Neal says, keeps moving ahead..Perry quits. He is a fuckin quitter. Journey is forever evolving...thankfully.

But instead they prefer to pretend they still "have it" by performing concerts that heavily rely on archived material and give only a subtle nod to their present incarnation. They coast on past glories, yet feign relevance by churning out tepid new tunes.

Again, Journey still "has it." Playing to full arenas is proof..Tepid tunes? How would you know, since you haven't heard them. Also the fact that you fat bitches feel the need to come in here and tear down something, tells me you fear Journey is doing something right. Yes, I called you all fat bitches, because you are all pathetic losers.

But most people see through this charade - except for a handful of die-hards, who are in deep denial that the Journey has ended.

Most people? I know of three fat bitches who do..PF, HOTS and the other Heads on this board. Again, hard to argue with a band who is outselling many new bands at the gate, and are about to go on the radio with a new CD...Hmm..how is Steve perry doing? I heard he was at home, relaxing.

Hey bitches, go away..you are embarrassing yourselves.

How is this article NOT about Journey?

When Stephen was reunited with his sometime girlfriend LC on this summer's season premiere of the MTV reality series "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County," his choice of soundtrack music was inspired: "Don't Stop Believin' " by the 80's power ballad specialists Journey, a firm song about uncertain love. "Generally, in reality TV, you like to control what music is being played," said the show's music supervisor, Jon Ernst, "but that was Stephen's own CD. It wasn't staged at all - he's a Journey fan.

Neil Zlozower

Apparently he's a tastemaker, too. The day after the premiere, "Don't Stop Believin' " made its debut on the iTunes sales chart in the top 5, and it hovered in the top 10 for two weeks. Retail sales of the band's two greatest-hits collections jumped 40 percent in the week following the show's debut, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"A whole other generation is coming up to me now - anywhere from 8 to 22 years old - wanting me to sign autographs," said Steve Perry, Journey's former lead singer. "They think Journey was awesome."

It's been a busy summer for the song, which has also appeared as karaoke music on an episode of "Family Guy"; as the soundtrack to "Star Wars: A Musical Tribute," a widely circulated Web video that cheekily revisits the love affair between Han Solo and Princess Leia (www.murdoch-watch.com/star_wars/); and as the hook for Capone & Noreaga's "City Boys" on the Heatmakerz' "Crack Mixtape Vol. 1." "I'm so glad the song is still speaking the way it originally was," Mr. Perry said of the recent attention. "So many of our graduating class, as I call them, you don't hear from anymore."

Up next for Journey: a new album, "Generations," due in October; a live DVD from 1981 produced by Mr. Perry, including a rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'," in November (he is estranged from the rest of the band, who continue to tour under the name Journey); and, perhaps, a return trip to Southern California. "The funniest thing," said Mr. Perry, "is that we just got a call from 'The O.C.' saying they were interested in using a Journey song next season."

So what's gonna be Perryfaithfulbitch? Did they slide down the mountain, or as your god says, other bands are not heard from again.

Obviously, Journey is still a force, whether you and the other bitches realize it or not, I could give a rats ass. Your opinions are not even worthy to be on this board.

Hey Perryfaithful,

Thank you for bringing this article here. I enjoyed reading it very much! :D

I think that it is SO cool that the younger generation is asking for autographs from Perry. You know that really says A LOT about Perry's fame & talent, the fact that the younger generation RECOGNIZE HIM as the singer in Journey, even though he's not been in Journey for 7 years.

And I hope O.C. does use MORE SONGS of the Perry/ Journey in their shows. Hey anytime I can hear Perry singing is GREAT to me! :D :D

Here's hoping for a new studio album one day.

I was at SPAC last night (will post my thoughts soon) and as Deano just said 12,000 to 14,000 were there...(Were you there Deano?)

The place was filled to the rafters, the lawn was full, there were people of ALL ages, including young teenagers, and Steve Augeri owned the stage! Nobody was looking for Perry, they were just reacting to the songs, AND to Steve on stage. He interacted with the audience, and held his own. The concert was AWESOME!

Those "big" shoes have been filled.......Journey is back!

Gee Andrew, did my post bother you that much??? It suprises me that you would respond to my post in a negative way towards Perry, since "my post was to Perryfaithful" & certainly WASN'T negative in anyway towards ANYONE here!

Hey do you think this could be one of the possible reasons why YOU'VE never gotten an interview with Steve Perry???

And wasn't it YOU who wrote on "one of these threads", "We all Love Steve Perry". This post above that YOU wrote certainly NEGATES that doesn't it???

And for anyone else here who "feels threatened" by my response to Perryfaithful, just skip over my post & read Deano's posts!

Andrew wasn't negative in the slightest.
What he stated was FACT.
Don't take your inability to deal with it out on him.
I'm tired of u Loons' denigrating attitude towards the guy who pays the bills and keeps the lights on around here.

All Andrew said was that Perry was home alone. Isn't that the truth? He certainly isn't out busting ass, working 12 hour days doing backup vox...and he sure in the Hell isn't on a tour bus like a real man, or a real rock star, PERFORMING for the fans of Journey..No, he is home, reading "Cat World, counting the money Augeri is making FOR him...

Actually, it was identified early on that I was a continuing supporter of Journey and I was TOLD BY PERRY MANAGEMENT that he would not give me an interview for that reason.

Yep...better believe it...because I was seen to be promoting the new line up of the band back as far as 1997 I was told Perry would not do any interview with me.

Says a lot I think, but I continue to request an interview every year and continue to be denied each time.
