Houston '81 DVD Update

Postby jrnyman28 » Fri Sep 02, 2005 1:16 am

From John Kalodner's Ask JDK 2005 section
(updated Wednesday, August 31st, 2005)

Question: First off, thanks to all the great work you do! Can you please update all the Journey fans as to the progress on this DVD? We are all eagerly awaiting this and hope it will still be released this year. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Answer: We are currently working on the Houston 1981 DVD. Hopefully, it will be out before Christmas. There are 14 songs on the DVD.

Sounds like only the songs that were telelcast on MTV if that, hardly a complete show. A number of these were already on the disappointing Greatest Hits DVD, whatever its called. I watched it a couple of times but skipped the stuff from the Houston show as I'd enough of that years ago.
I would rather have seen them release something pre-Escape if they were going to put out anything old.
A cool idea would have been a compilation of footage from various tours, with maybe the same track listing as the 81 Houston show but the performance of the Infinity songs from the '78 tour, the Evolution songs from the '79 tour, etc. Inclusion of some stuff from 75-77 would be cool on something like that.

Geez, there's no pleasing some people!

Those are great ideas, Tails. That would be the ultimate Journey LIVE DVD.

Make that a SEPARATE dvd release. Oh that's rights planets are formed and dissolve now between JRNY or most classic artists releases now.

Anyway, why not add the tracks missing from the '81 MTV show (Already the greatest concert show ever released. Thanks, NIG) and put out the whole show? Pitiful, lazy job by perry and kolodner.

What if they omit the Houston footage on the GH DVD and put the rest of the show up? Nah, I doubt it!

I hope the sound is better than on the recent projects. And they could put a ton of extras on there if they felt like it.

To be honest, I would be more interested in a Departure Tour DVD, like the last show Gregg played...or how about CAPTURED!?

Journey now has a chance to show up the classic material by releasing a 2-disc DVD of THIS TOUR! It would blow away the Houston show when people look at the setlist available and compare the two!

from nick,
it was actually me who posted the question to kalodner's site and i just found out now from here he answered it, i too was kind of hoping some extra tracks from that show would make it, but 14 songs would be exactly what mtv broadcast, counting lights/stay awhile as 2, i would have loved to seen the party's over, wanted dead or alive, and what ever else they played that night, but still, even though most of us have this already, to get a remaster copy with mint sound is necessary for everyone's journey collection and if this sells as well as the greatest hits dvd, i am sure we will see a few more dvds right?

Better hold off that "mint sound" declaration. Hear the sound on the GH dvd? Perry and Kalodner are responsible.

from nick,
yes i have the gh hits dvd, but they are supposed to be remastering the sound for this dvd, i am sure it will be better and jrnyman you are right, i would have really like a live dvd box set, similar to the time set, but with all live tracks from different eras, or yes the last show with greg rolllie is fantastic, i have a bad bootleg copy of this show, this would be great as well as a raised on radio show and what about frontiers, could they really be planning to release a live dvd from these tours for the next few years, it sounds too good to be true, i don't know if the interest is there on perry's part to do this, who knows

 Ya know what....I hate to say this, but at this point I could give a shit less if this Houston DVD ever gets released. If they want to release a great classic DVD, let it be that LAST Departure show they have in the archives, from Japan 1980. Herbie Herbert couldn't say enough about this show, it's supposed to be phenomenal and if it's anything like the Departure show I witnessed in August 1980, I'm sure it is! I WANT THIS FREAKIN' SHOW, not the Houston '81 show that I've seen probably 50 times already, if not more... :?

from nick,
we all want that departure show, but the general public might not, because it won't have all the escape hits on there, don't you guys think that this houston dvd will sell like crazy, i do, just look at gh dvd, and it should hopefully influence perry and kalodner to know that they can crank one of these dvds out per year, until they basically run out of shows that were filmed, but based on my bootleg copy of the japan 80 show with rollie, this would probably be the ultimate release for all of us diehards here on this board, this show is just flat out incredible, patiently, people and places, of a lifetime, precious time, homemade love, dixie highway, i could go on and on, and it is shot pretty well also, of couse not as good as today's standards, but the filming is pretty good, this should be the next release, but if they do put something else out i am guessing raised on radio due to the poplularity or randy jackson alone,

Well, if they remaster both the picture and sound of the Houston ESC4P3 show (which SHOULD be a no-brainer but after the GH dvd ya never know) then it will be worth the wait.

Then they should keep going, start staggering shows from different eras out. Give the Rolie/Departure show, an 83 show, and an ROR show all proper remastering and get them out for goddsakes.

And the real JRNY should put out both the Warfield dvd and a live album, as well as a show from this tour and the DeTour.

from nick,
i totally agree with you red13, i think it will all depend on steve perry, hopefully the sales dictate more releases, but will he be interested enough to continue these projects,

I am sure it pays better than doing BG vox on a David Pack album, so I would say Perry is up for it.

As long as he doesn't have to do much work...

Two chanel stereo, simple packaging, not many extras (or none at all), and plop it on the shelves so fans can lap up the bathwater.

"bathwater"? Sorry, wrong forum.
