ABNS ~ Revisited

Postby sngrchk04 » Wed Aug 31, 2005 1:43 pm

Hey all....

I decided to give ABNS another shot....as you recall, I really did not like it the first time I heard it....something about it kept bothering me:

I wanted to know if Steve was singing MORE than "shades of forever".

I listened to it over and over again.....tuned my ears to the lower harmony on "You tried to reach / something you could not touch" etc.....heard the entire song a bunch of times today while driving around.

and YUP ~ STEVE DOES SING THE LOWER HARMONY.

His vocal pronounciation is there:

"You trahd to reach / something you could not touch....."

"Here's where our blue skahs...."etc."

"So man-eee tahms / And guuurl ahm so sorry, I made you crah...."

(Oh yeah....and Timothy B. Schmidt sings the HIGHEST harmony....but it's so faint, you can hardly hear it.)

And BTW ~ to "match" your voice so closely with someone else, while singing a harmony line that's a third LOWER than the melody ~ is much more difficult than singing just the melody.....it's just so aggravating to me: He really SHOULD have sung the whole song, since this is "proof positive" that his "lower" voice is SO MUCH STRONGER now.

Isn't it sad that we have to do forensic work on BG vox to try to determine is Perry's voice was good 2 or 3 years ago, when he last recorded? If the dude can sing, I sure wish he would share his voice with us again.

Am I the only Journey fan in the world who is sometimes irritated by the liberties Perry took with his enunciation and making ten syllables out of a one syllable word? Not a knock against his once amazing talent, but I think he occasionally took it too far in this respect.
For example, Forever In Blue-uhhhh. That alone nearly ruins the song for me.

I stacked about five of Classic Journey on the phono this morning and I can't imagine Journey music without it. I believe that Augeri makes use of the style also.

For Perry, its such a big part of his style that its impossible to imagine him singing without doing that.

As for Steve A, he does it to a much lesser extent. I think of the Augeri era songs, only once have I thought he approached over do-ing it as I thought Perry sometimes did. On The Place In Your Heart, on the word heart in one place he puts several syllables in.
On Generations in general, he's moved more toward his own singing style, I hear alot of things he did with Tall Stories and Tyketto. But I think The Place In Your Heart has more Perry-isms than he did on anything on Arrival. Or maybe they are Sam Cooke-isms. "if I could take you THERE"
I think Steve's sound is naturally similar to Perry, but he sings in his own style. A contrast to Deen and Hugo, etc. whose voices I think may be less naturally like Perry's but they seem to try to sound like Perry right down to phrasing things as Perry would. When they talk about a Perry clone, that's Hugo. Their voices seem thinner than Steve's. Deen has more of the rasp.

I can't say Perry ruined any songs by his singing, just his producing.

That's ok. I have to look up Journey discographies to figure out what the acronyms for the song titles are that people use on here. I felt really dumb when I had to ask what WITS stood for (Wheel in the Sky)!

Well, ABNS was WRITTEN right after 9/11, but David Pack's site stated that this song was recorded in Summer, 2004.

www.davidpack.com

There's a group shot of Steve, David, and Timothy B. Schmidt "in action" at a studio mic.

It's called, "secret slide show"

I have Pack's C.D. on order, Nora. Does it say who produced the album?

OK - here's the credentials from the jacket:

Produced By David Pack
For Mpowered Ideas Media, Inc.
"A Brand New Start" produced by Steve Perry & David Pack.

David's list of "thank-you"s includes the following, if I may add it on here:

Steve Perry - For the generous gift of your time, friendship, extraordinary voice, and laser-beam artistic vision - and for the help in sequencing and mastering, Mr. "Home Slice".
